Robin Hood (2018)
Lighten up, it was fun to watch
I like remakes that try something different. Why bother making it otherwise? Sometimes, like with True Grit, a modern remake is almost necessary because the original had so much going for it, but ultimately had room for improvement. Sometimes people just like stories and want more time in the universe, or to tell an old story in a new way, or maybe they see something sort of hinted at but not explored and they're curious. Maybe they just want a buttload of money. Doesn't everyone?
I liked the costumes, they were cool. I liked the sets, and the over the top shots of fire and violence, and the cheesy lines. My attention wandered a little, action sequences lose me a little, but overall this movie was a fun time. That's all I need it to be. If I want to think, there are movies for that. I really wish people would relax a little, it's not the worst movie( or TV show, book, song, video game) just because you didn't like it.
Mortal Kombat (2021)
Pretty
Bad dialogue, gorgeous fights. The opening scene was probably the high point, but it was a consistently fun watch.
Hmm, review is too short, so I'll add that I didn't even recognize Mechad Brooks. He's been eating his spinach.
The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising (2007)
It was ok
I loved the books when I was a kid, and obviously they're better, but the the books always are, always. So that's fine. They made a lot of narrative changes, and that's fine too. Time is an issue, also relatability, and some things are hard to translate from page to screen. Ok, the sixth sign was kind of silly, but it's a kid movie.
It was pretty to look at and I thought the cast was solid and engaging. It's not amazing, but it wasn't terrible. I'll probably watch it again with my kids.
Katherine's Lullaby (2020)
William Kircher broke my heart
They were both really wonderful, but I feel like dad gets the MVP for this one. This was a taut little thriller. I was surprised a couple of times. I was also nervous a couple time, because I really didn't know what was coming. And I really felt for both of them. This movie is kind of a hidden gem.
VANish (2015)
Wasn't expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised
I had fun with this movie. It wasn't high art but I really enjoyed the characters and their interplay. That was the best part really, I just liked listening to them talk to each other, but it was enough to keep me watching through the first half, and then I was just curious enough to finish it. The challenge they set themselves of only filming in and from the van was interesting. And the lead actress was very charismatic and beautiful, reminds me a tiny bit of Kate Siegel. Also always grateful to get to spend any time with Tony Todd or Danny Trejo.
It's definitely worth a watch.
Still (2018)
Gorgeous
Everything about this movie is beautiful. It's slow, but intriguing. Quiet, but wonderfully acted. The cinematography is gorgeous. The characters are sympathetic. The story is original. I totally get why some people wouldn't like it, but if you like to really think about the movies you watch, this movie is for you. It's a movie for people who grew up reading for fun.
