Jonathan & Jesus (2024)
Love Jesus, Love Jonathan the Man
Thank you so much Jonathan for being so real and human as you openly share about the struggles of acting in the role of Jesus as well as its transformative blessings. I was very moved by your miraculous experience with God, your humble surrender as a seeker in Jesus, and the weight of portraying Jesus, not wanting to cause harm to others because ultimately you are Jonathan, the man. I felt deep empathy and gratitude for you. I want you to know that I prayed to God as a sometimes Christian on the fence for a show about Jesus where He was finally approachable. All the other movies about Jesus I saw, I still felt distant and separate. I actually prayed for a movie or show that would make the gospel come to life for me in a way that was meaningful and tangible.
In watching your humanity in portraying Jesus, I was deeply moved in my faith. I was even more moved by the faith in your walk as an actor and human being as you seek finding the Jesus not on the big screen. I pray God continue to bless you and protect you as a fellow wayfarer and I hope that you are also given the grace and freedom to live as Jonathan the man without so much pressure. I know that it is a great blessing, but thank you for your honesty in showing the weight of it as well. I thank you for your bravery while God works out His plan for your life, and I'm so glad he chose you to play this role, and I'm thankful you were honest enough to remind the world to keep looking for Jesus until you find Him and not to confuse Jesus with Jonathan the man, and you are exactly the man God would have you be, as you are.
A Gentleman in Moscow (2024)
Excellent series, now I must read the book!
This is a beautiful series and much needed in a time where bad writing, gory cheap thrills, and gaudy superficialism are passing for art. Watching this I am not left with the hollow belly ache of mental junk food, instead I feel content and plump, dining on the slow courses of a gourmet meal. I leave nourished and whole.
Ewan Mcgregor's acting is transcendent, and the viewer is invited to slowly unwrap a story being told in the tradition of a good natured, nostalgic adventure. This is accomplished in the spirit of good story telling, and without sparing the audience of the true visceral threat of a world unraveled and put together again within the violence approaching post Lenin Russia.
McGregor's acting is so visceral yet subdued that we get to experience his character's adventure and make it our own, and we reemerge changed for the better with greater appreciation for the human spirit. I am left with a deeper sense of value for the lives of all human beings.
There are a lot of complaints about using black actors but I feel it works on multiple levels. Fehinti does an excellent job acting, his story of a marginalized human being experiencing senseless injustice, where his motives are good but lead to unforeseen tragic consequences through no real fault of his own. Social injustice is the larger heart of this story, and it has multiple layers. People are missing the point, it's not a historical reenactment, it's a story being told with depth and weight, with purpose.
The purpose of art is often to give voice to the voiceless, and if the art is really good, the spirit inside will sit up and pay attention.
There is catharsis to be had. It unravels and winds and narrows and opens up wide. It remains with me to guide my better judgement into real life.
It's obvious that the writers in Hollywood are no longer on strike, and I hope they are very well paid for the good work they are bringing to the screen. After this I'm going to look up their names and see what else they've written.
Well Done!! Bravo!!!!
Encounter (2021)
Moving film, worth it/ Spoilers
Great movie, I don't understand why it didn't get higher ratings. I was very moved by this film. I am taken on a journey into the mental unraveling of a loving father who served his country and experiences ptsd. I experience his consequences and frustration, his abandonment by his country after serving so many tours as he struggles with his psychotic break. I experience his terror and mission from his perspective so that what would appear insane becomes understandable and sane to the one undergoing the psychotic break. This helped me to have empathy for those experiencing mental illness, seeing what is insane to others is sane in their minds. I experience his fear, paranoia, hallucinations, and have the opportunity to see through this story from the perspective of this war hero that ptsd does not mean a person is incapable of love, this man is actually a loving and caring father who is sick and needs help but doesn't get it because he is ultimately misunderstood. We see his children come to understand the situation and the suffering of the family. We feel their love for their father who is ultimately a lovable man. We see him return a little to reality as he bonds with his children and forget to fear the alien invasion, only to get triggered back in to the insanity. We see him make poor choices and struggle to make good ones, as love ultimately guides his intentions, and as his panic at imagined threats are always interfering in every interaction while at heart he is a caring, loving father. We get to see how talented he is as a special forces marine veteran, and admire his unique skill set. We live in a country where many of our veterans are committing suicide, we are losing our veterans and many of them end up homeless and isolated for dealing with some of the consequences of serving our country. Traumatic brain injuries and psychological wounds of war is a real problem, with real neurological effects, and in some of our veterans the chances of having psychotic episodes are high. They can't be helped if they are misunderstood and abandoned. No one wants to experience psychosis. I am grateful to any story that allows for more compassion for their suffering and the suffering of their families, that these men and women may be misunderstood and need help rather than punishment. I realize that ptsd does not lead to as dire a situation as this man and his family, but for the rare few that next make any headlines, it gives pause to any judgement, and the same goes for those suffering from any mental illness.
Also, the acting was phenomenal. It was great to watch for that alone. Well done and a story well told.
