Equals (2015)

target audience???

Warning: Spoilers
Well if you are a guy you're going to love sci fi movies with lots of action, or you can even enjoy the super slow pace of THX-1138 but I don't know if you are going to like Equals but maybe your girlfriend, sister or mom will, so give it a try with an open mind and don't expect much action here but maybe get ready for some tears. PS> reviewing this in 2020 its very scary what is happening where government has more control over us by giving us a false sense of security (safety) in exchange for giving away our rights so the line between science fiction and reality is starting to blur

Seventeen (2019)

Charming and touching

I liked this movie a lot but the title should have been Oveja "Sheep" instead of Seventeen. I recommend it to everyone specially animal lovers and mostly for the black sheep of the family. Low budget movie with lots of heart and a message of Hope.

this is a cult movie
13 July 2014
Too bad movies like this don't get a bigger budget, specially to enhance the special effects and futuristic scenarios, but that really doesn't matter when you are a creative genius like Gilliam, he does a great job with what he is given. This movie has great resemblance to his other retro futuristic movie Brazil, which combines retro and futuristic images and elements in a Dystopian chaotic Orwellian future.

Here we struggle with the main character (wonderful played by Christoph Waltz) and his meaningless solitary existence hoping to get an answer by a higher power of what life is all about.

So can the hero find out the meaning of life or the absence of it? and will he be willing to sacrifice his potential joy and happiness in order to get that mysterious call. Well you will be the judge.

If you like this movie I also recommend PI by Aronofsky, Brazil, Blade runner, 1984, THX1138 among other great ones. Hopefully this movie will become a cult classic and show new directors that they don't require 100+ million dollars to make good sci-fi movies. Thanks and cheers to Gilliam for sticking for what he believes in and daring to tackle difficult philosophical questions and having that original fingerprint he stamps in all his great movies.

book vs movie
7 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I got to admit that as a child the book was probably more exciting than the movie, but as an adult the movie has a better effect, since it is more realistic and less fantastic. Oz is not a real place but a result of the subconscious mind, which picks up information from the everyday life, especially in cases of stress or difficulties, like in the case of Dorothy and her feelings of not being appreciated and causing trouble to her family. After the tornado when she gets hit in the head and goes unconscious, we see her mind trying to put together the information her subcontinent mind received prior the accident and made a story out of it and created this magical place in which she learns to deal with her troubles and goes into a journey with her inseparable sidekick pet to solve her confusions and realize that her family and friends love her and she doesn't need to run away because her aunt and uncle need her. When Dorothy regains consciousness she doesn't believe it was a dream, it was a real place and cannot make the connections of the fictional characters with the real ones. Fascinatingly this is how the brain works especially while we have lucid dreams or we are influenced by subliminal messages, mass media advertisements, watching TV, or any other state where we are not aware of our thoughts. So this movie works very well at showing this phenomenon. But this is just one example of the greatness of this film which will remain a timeless classic for ages. I am against remakes for great films, especially after recently watching the remake of Alice in wonderland, but I will look forward to see a remake of the Wizard of OZ with the current special effects technology and a great cast, score and direction.

3 Idiots (2009)

Didn't like the name
14 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I loved this movie, it was a very smart and enjoyable movie despite the length. I loved the characters specially Rancho, Pro Virus and Silencer. I am not a fan of music in movies but I loved the music in this movie. The only thing I didn't like about the movie was the name: 3 idiots is not appropriate, it should have been "Looking for Rancho" or "Al-its-wel". Another thing was It doesn't explain much about why Rancho ran away from his friends and his love, it never explains why he couldn't express his love. You can sort of figure it out at the end of the movie, but is not that clear. Well despite all this it shows Hollywood that a movie can be funny and smart at the same time, and a college movie doesn't have to be about stupid humor, booze, bombshells and boobies.

Choking Man (2006)

not for everyone

Warning: Spoilers
I watched this film and think is very realistic and well done, specially with a tight budget and difficult theme. I think despite the struggle, Jorge is very brave and knows he has to overcome his demons in order to get close to Amy, we see this when he walks her over to the train station, the gift that he gives her, when he says HI to her, and many other moments. At the same time she gives him courage and acknowledges him that leads to the ending of the movie and how he is able to push over his "roommate" or inner self and finally take some sort of control. I think Its a hard movie to understand if you are not familiar with autism, social and anxiety disorders, its difficult to appreciate. It is a common struggle mostly seen in big cities like New York or like the hikikomoris in Tokyo, kids or teenagers who isolate themselves for months or even years without leaving their rooms. So please watch this little gem with open mind and tolerance for the human being and its internal demons imposed by a demanding society that dehumanize us in many ways.
