Move to Heaven: an Excellent Job!
16 May 2021
Netflix's Move to Heaven is an unexpected gem, one of the best dramas produced from South-Korea, told in a realistic and wonderful way, unique and very original Korean drama, and will truly appeal to a global audience.

Originality, sincerity and universal values are what makes Korean dramas produced by Netflix stand out compared to the regular Korean dramas which are still very catered to the local audience. From Kingdom, to Love Alarm, to Sweet Home and now Move to Heaven. All amazing pieces of art that are unique and very original.

The story centers around trauma cleaners, who are people who clean up and move stuff of the deceased. This explains the title of this drama: Move to Heaven. It is also the name of their company. In 10 episodes we see multiple story arcs evolving, including those of the main characters Han Geu-ru played amazingly by Tang Jun-sang and his uncle Cho Sang-gu. We see very relevant social themes being addressed by the trauma cleaners, all in a very sincere, realistic and emotional way. Keep your tissue box ready though!

A special shout-out to Tang Jun-sang for his epic performance and realistic portrayal of the Asperger syndrome and for connecting the different story lines. His character is smart, remembers everything, connects the dots, and speaks like a robot. It is something that viewers will not easily forget.

Han Geu-ru was told to tell himself every day in the mirror that he did an excellent job. I can only agree, and would like to extend this to the whole show. You did an excellent job!

Vincenzo (2021)
4/10
Confusing mess and overrated
16 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
How to best describe Vincenzo? On the surface it seems like the Godfather meets Korean drama and the premise looks promising. In practise, I can at best describe it as a strange mix of black comedy, mixed with action and horror elements. Truly a strange mix, which ends up being confusing and you end up on a rollercoaster, but one that is moving in all directions!

The whole story did not make any sense and was far from credible and may be culturally insensitive. A Korean adoptee who can speak fluent Korean and Italian with a heavy Korean accent. Right...! The development of the characters was stale and the plot twists may be surprising, but totally ridiculous.

The sub-plot where Vincenzo was gay baiting someone was truly offensive. In this time of inclusion, I found this highly cringe and insensitive. It may be normal for a Korean audience, but in the rest of the world this is not done.

We see through the episodes the violence escalating. Where it starts relatively innocent, it escalates into something increasingly more gruesome and gore. Culminating in the torture and demise of the antagonists: stabbing in the neck where we see blood pouring out, live burning of a woman and the slowly drilling to death of the "end boss". It intends to shock and wrap up the story, but I found it unnecessary, unsatisfactory and out of context with the vibe of the other episodes.

The acting of some characters was quite good though, notably the main protagonist Vincenzo (Song Joong-ki) and the antagonists Choi Myung-hee (Kim Yeo-jin), Jang Han-seo (Kwak Dong-yeon) and Jang Han-seok (Ok Taec-yeon). I can appreciate their performance. It is just that everything else was incoherent and a confusing mess.

And what about the take home message of Vincenzo? There is no justice in this world. An eye for an eye. Torture and killing is okay. It is okay to take matters in your own hand. How can you spread such a message? Truly incredible!

Best Chinese drama
26 March 2021
This is the best Chinese drama that has all the ingredients: great cast, story, cinematography, music, humor, and lots of love and warmth. It is the gold standard for Chinese dramas in terms of production value that at least matches and surpasses the quality of Korean dramas. I hope more Chinese dramas will follow this production quality. "A Love So Beautiful," highly recommended and truly beautiful!

Love Alarm (2019–2021)
9/10
Follow your heart, not a love alarm
14 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Love Alarm has a very good message, which was explained in the last episode. Instead of living your life because of an app, you can just live your life by following your own will and heart. This is what Kim Jo-jo and Lee Hye-yeong eventually did. Many are upset because they really liked Hwang Sun-oh, and Song Kang who played him really nailed it in Season 1.

But Sun-oh chose to let his life be determined by the app, and accepted the break-up because of the app, although he knew that he loved Jo-jo and Jo-jo loved him. Meanwhile, Hye-yeong was really chasing Jo-jo and was madly in love with her, despite the app saying otherwise. There is a cardinal rule in life: the guy who tries harder gets the girl. And Love Alarm is no different.

For those who feel sorry for Sun-oh, don't be. He got an excellent girlfriend Yuk-jo who is very patient, caring, unselfish, loving and pretty. Such girls are really rare, and he hit the jackpot here. If he starts to live his life like his best friend Hye-yeong did, which is following his heart, he will return her love.

I really enjoyed Love Alarm, both seasons. I think Season 1 was better directed and had better cinematography. At times I found the camera work in Season 2 distracting and even annoying. The colors were sometimes too bright, which was hurting my eyes. But the music was better in Season 2 and the shots on Jeju island were stunning, so the PD knows how to deliver good shots. The back stories were very nice, and I liked the growth of characters because of these stories. The actors were top in their class and I am looking forward to their next shows.

The only thing I would have changed was to give Sun-oh an explicit happy ending by finally letting Yuk-jo's love alarm go off in their final scenes and with them both smiling. This would have reduced the expected backlash and reduced the SLS effect.

I rate the TV show as 9/10. For those who love the actors, show them YOUR love by watching it on Netflix!

Record of Disappointment
23 January 2021
This drama is at times enjoyable, but overall is quite a disappointment due to the bad script and bad acting.

The lead actress Park So-dam, who got fame as the daughter in Parasite, showed surprisingly a lack of range. Her expressions: happy, sad, or angry were all bland and similar. I did not believe she was a real person. The 2nd lead male actor played by Byeon Woo-seok deserves some acting lessons. It was just aweful and painful to see him "act". His controlling tiger mom, played by Shin Ae-ra, was overacting and was unsympathetic not because of her character, but her annoying portrayal.

However, some cast members were very good. Park Bo-gum, playing the protagonist Sa Hye-jun, was a strong male lead and brought his character really to life. The family of Sa Hye-jun was the highlight of the drama. Special praise in particular for his funny brother played by Lee Jae-won and the touching scenes with the grandfather.

The mixed performance of the cast could be overlooked if the story was well written and the different plots believable and relatable. But you end up confused, not understanding the morale of the story, and empty-minded. Record of Youth is a record of disappointment.

Hospital Playlist (2020–2021)
10/10
Heartwarming and heartbreaking, absolutely recommended
21 January 2021
Hospital Playlist has been written by the same writer who wrote "Reply 1988", Lee Woo-jung. The producer is also the same, Shin Won-ho. The work that this combination creates is absolutely fantastic. Hospital Playlist shares a lot of the same vibe of "Reply 1988".

Hospital Playlist does not have a central storyline. Instead, we see the storylines of the 5 main characters, who are all medical doctors in the same hospital, friends, and also musical band mates. There are plenty of smaller subplots that stretch out over multiple episodes, be sure not to miss those. And do not miss the easter eggs or cameos that the creators added that refer to "Reply 1988". This TV drama requires some attention span in the beginning, but once you are suck in their worlds, you will share their heartwarming joy and heartbreaking tears.

Like Reply 1988, we have a group of 5 friends: 4 guys, 1 girl. We get a look in their lives. It is very realistic and funny. All the cast is sublime and excellent. They bring their characters to life in such a wonderful way. Each episode you get a very welcome musical intermezzo near the end when the 5 friends come together to play a song live as a band. The songs they play are older Korean power ballads with strong lyrics that capture perfectly the main feeling of each episode. And there is a running gag of the female neurosurgeon Chae Song-hwa, played wonderfully by Jeon Mi-do, who is tone deaf and does not have a feeling of rhythm, but still wants to be a vocalist. It makes you smile from ear to ear.

I absolutely enjoyed Hospital Playlist, season 1. It is such a wonderful TV drama that is heartwarming and heartbreaking. You get to laugh and to cry. Definitely recommended, get started and watch it!

Start-Up (2020)

Sail off without a map, follow YOUR dream
13 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"Follow YOUR dream," this is the summary of this excellent drama series from Korea.

To start with the best: the soundtrack and music is really great and enhanced the experienced by bring additional emotions to the story. You will definitely enjoy the awesome and uplifting music in this show! Definitely high praise for track 5 "Running" created by Gaho.

In terms of cast, granny Choi stole every scene she was in, some of them true tear jerkers. All praise to her! One of the lead characters in particular, Han Ji-pyeong or "Good Boy", played by Kim Seon-ho and his younger self Nam Da-reum, were very impressive as well. They showed a lot of depth and range with their character. Seo Dal-mi, played by the stunning Bae Suzy, is truly a joy to watch. Nam Do-san, the Korean Sheldon Cooper, played by Nam Joo-hyuk was good in the beginning, only wished he could have stayed in his nerd role instead of transforming later to a regular male protagonist that you can find in Korean dramas.

The story is original, especially in the start-up and IT context. The different terms used are explained well and even accurate. Great to see the popularization of artificial intelligence and machine learning. It was not always accurate though, but that can be forgiven and overlooked.

The cinematography is stunning. The graphics very well done. The production is slick and of very high quality. It is candy for your eyes.

What I did not like was the many flashbacks, which slowed down the pace of the story. I also think less time should have been spent on the love triangle that never really took off, but instead the other characters deserved more development and air time, such as the history and bonding between Samsan friends and relationship between the Seo sisters.

In contemporary modern societies, the pressure to perform and follow the path that many others follow is high. So the morale of the story is actually good. You need to dare to follow YOUR dream by sailing off without a map sometimes. Don't be afraid to be a trailblazer. Truly inspiring!

Reply 1988 (2015–2016)
10/10
An absolute gem to watch
15 December 2020
After Parasite winning the Oscars, I became curious in other film and TV works from Korea. I watched Reply 1988 and it opened a whole new world to me. I have never seen a TV show like this. It was absolutely amazing how well the storylines are written and the characters are developing each episode.

The cast is top notch. They blend drama, romance and comedy perfectly. The older experience cast gave the story richness. The younger cast did an amazing job and the chemistry was real. This is what real friendship looks like. Their coming-of-age story lines are touching and entertaining.

The show is much more than the often discussed love triangle. It shows love in a much broader and deeper way between friends, parents, siblings and family.

The story has a lot depth. It has references to actual events happening at the end of the 80s, like the Seoul Olympics and the pro-democracy protests. It captures that zeitgeist perfectly. I did not understand all the cultural references to pop culture around that time, but I could certainly appreciate it.

Reply 1988 is Korean, but at the same time it tells a universal story in a unique and brilliant way. Therefore, it transcends different cultures. It will actually teach you valuable life lessons. And that makes this show an absolute gem to watch.
