Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2008)
Better and funnier
I was looking forward to Madagascar 2 after I heard a sequel was coming out. I thought the first one was great and one of my favorite's animated movies of all-time. When I saw Madagascar 2, I thought it was better and funnier than the first one.
After being stranded in the shores of Madagascar, the New Yorkers plan an idea of repairing an old damaged plane on the island. The penguins somewhat repaired the plane thinking it's all perfect and done. Not long after taking off, the penguins notices the plane is having engines problems and tells the passengers (the New Yorkers and King Julian's people) on the air plane is going down. They land in the plains of Africa and Alex, Marty, Melman, and Gloria find themselves encountering their own kind and realizing this is where it all began.
Most of the characters from the original return in the sequel, but the movie do have new ones as well. In the movie, Alex (Ben Stiller) meets his parents. Marty (Chris Rock), Melman (David Schwimmer) and Gloria (Jadan Pinkett Smith) meet new friends also. The Penguins are great once again and we also meet monkeys as well. They were pretty funny to say the least.
I thought the movie was hilarious and funnier than Madagascar. In the first film, King Julian stole the show, but in Escape 2 Africa, I thought the old lady with glasses took that spot. I was surprised her character was brought back in the sequel. And like I said before, the penguins are awesome and I would love to see them in Antarctica in the next movie.
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is a great family movie and it didn't disappoint. I thought the movie had a deeper story than the original and was definitely better too. If you enjoy Madagascar, then I think Escape 2 Africa is worth the watch. I am looking forward to Madagascar 3 on 2012.
Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008)
Hilarious
Zack and Miri Make a Porno went through a lot of battle before it hit theaters, but that didn't stop me from seeing it. The trailers were very funny and I knew this movie was going to be one of my favorite comedies and it was. There were so many great comedy movies on 2008 and Zack and Miri was definitely one of them.
Two long time friends, Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) are broke and are in financial difficulties. With no money, they soon realized that they can't pay all the bills and everything is just falling apart. They decide to make a porn movie to get back on track, but will this idea work or will it ruin their long friendship forever.
Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks were hilarious in the movie, but I thought Craig Robinson stole the show big time. He plays Delaney and I thought he was the right actor for the role. The supporting cast were also great, especially Justin Long. The gay voice was hysterical and he just nailed it perfectly.
Zack and Miri Make a Porno was one of the funniest films of 2008 and I think is a must see. Director Kevin Smith adds another great flick to his resume and I can't wait for his next comedy film. If you are a fan of Smith, then I think Zack and Miri won't disappoint at all.
Sex Drive (2008)
one of the best
There were a lot of great comedy movies in 2008 and Sex Drive was one of them. The movie started it funny and it ended funny. Last year was a good year for comedy films and I hope this year is even better.
Ian (Josh Zuckerman) is a teenage boy who is a virgin and spends most of his time on the girl on the internet with some girl name Ms.Tasty. One day, the girl offers him sex, but Ian has to drive all the way to Knoxville to meet the girl. Desperate meeting the girl, Ian takes his brother Rex's (James Marsden) car without permission and is off to Knoxville with two of his close friends Lance (Clark Duke) and Felicia (Amanda Crew).
The story is very simple and easy to follow, but there is a good twist at the end that might surprised you a bit. The jokes are hilarious and different from other comedy films. I think you will not be disappointed at all.
The performances were solid and the cameos by Seth Green were incredibly funny. Josh Zuckerman really did a good job as Ian. I was surprised on how hilarious James Marsden is in the movie. He is so mean to his brother in the film, but in a funny way. I thought he pull it off perfectly. The rest of the cast did well also, including Amanda Crew and Clark Duke.
Sex Drive was one of the funniest films of 2008 and now one of my favorites. It is non-laughed until the end. I recommend this movie to anyone who loves comedy.
Max Payne (2008)
Good action, not so much for the script
When I saw the trailer of Max Payne, it caught my attention. The story looked interesting and I was looking forward to watch the movie. The movie was enjoyable, but not the script. Mark Walhberg was a great choice to play Max Payne and he didn't disappoint.
Max Payne is cop, whose being investigating the brutal murder of his family and wife. Hungry for revenge, Payne's obsessive investigation takes him to a dark journey that leads to a evil underworld.
The story is very interesting until the point where I felt like it had way too many turns. This was the main problem that I had with the film. It was good during the first 30 minutes, but the rest confused me quite a bit. At the end, I understood the plot better, but I could off enjoy the movie more if it wasn't for the twists.
The performances were good, except for the actor who plays B.B. Hensley. I felt he was just reading his lines instead of acting them. Mark Wahlberg was great as Max Payne. He really fits the character and he executed the role well. The hottie Mila Kunis was also great as Mona Sax. She is pretty bad-ass in the movie. Amaury Nolasco plays Jack Lupino, an ex-soldier, who goes nuts after drinking something in the movie. You'll know what I'm talking about. He really freak me out the first time I saw him in the movie. I thought he did a good job as Lupino.
I thought the action and special effects were awesome in the movie. The action was top-notch and violent too. The demons like creatures look very cool and look a little creepy too.
Max Payne is a entertaining movie, but the script problems was what left me not liking the movie more. The action was great as I said before and I don't think it will disappoint. Max Payne was a fun movie to watch and nothing else.
Eagle Eye (2008)
Great action
Of all the movies that came in September, Eagle Eye was the most interesting movie and exciting of all. The trailer looked very good and I was excited to see the film. From the trailer, the story seemed very simple to me, but after watching the movie, I was blown away of much plot was in the film. At first, it gets a little confusing, but you will eventually understand the story.
Jerry Shaw (Shia Labeouf) and Rachel Holloman (Michelle Monaghan) are strangers whose lives are being threatened by a mysterious phone call from a woman they don't know. Things get dangerous when the woman tells Shaw and Holloman to follow random orders that puts citizen's life at stake. As the situation gets worse, Shaw and Holloman become the country's most wanted criminals. Nobody knows why this happening, but Shaw and Holloman must work together to uncover the truth of why this is happening to them.
The performances in Eagle Eye were solid and Shia was great in this movie. I thought Shia Labeouf was great as Jerry Shaw. Even though I liked his performance in Transformers, I thought he was a little better in this movie. Michelle Monoghan gave a good performance and portrayed her character well. The rest of the cast did a good job too.
Eagle has very impressive action scenes and one of the best this year. The movie is a thrill ride from beginning to end and it will keep you on the edge of your seat. The car chases are awesome and very realistic. The film's special effects are also great. There are some big action sequences that I thought the effects were done beautifully and looked very real.
Eagle Eye is a great movie and one of the best this fall. I was entertained from beginning to end without a doubt. The movie has flaws, but I would describe them as minor ones. If you love Labeouf, then you should check out Eagle Eye and I don't think you will be disappointed.
Bangkok Dangerous (2008)
Disappointed
I wasn't planning going to the movies at all when Bangkok Dangerous was released. The movie didn't catch my attention that much. I also read a lot negative reviews on the movie and that concerned me a bit. I went and saw the movie since Nicolas Cage was in it. Despite having a great actor in the film, I didn't enjoy the movie that much at all.
Nicolas Cage plays Joe, an unknown assassin, whose is in Bangkok, Thailand to kill a bunch of bad guys. He hires a teenage boy (Kong) to be the messenger for his job. Whatever Joe tells him to do, the Kong does it. Joe starts training Kong since he kept asking Joe to train him the basic things of an assassin. While in his mission, Joe falls in love with a young beautiful woman who works in a medicine store. He then realizes that falling in love was a mistake and things quickly start getting out of hand.
The story was okay until the plot of the young woman brought in. I don't if she was deaf or didn't speak English, but every time she was in a scene, I got annoyed. I was basically praying that a scene with the girl didn't pop out, but it did and I got more annoyed. I also didn't like the way the movie ended. In my opinion, it felt questions open and I was really disappointed.
The performances in the movie were at least better than the story. Nicolas Cage was good as Joe and I wasn't surprised or disappointed either. The Asian actor was alright as Kong. He seems to fit his character well, but he didn't act well enough.
The action scenes were good, but they could have been better. There are some action scenes that I felt were kind of short. The scenes were enjoyable until they stop and move on to different boring scene. It seems every time I enjoy something about a particular scene, they move to the next scene and I lose interest in the whole. The last action sequence is probably the best of all. It was not awesome, but at least I enjoy it more than the others.
I think movie goers will not like Bangkok Dangerous and I don't recommend it to anybody. That's just my personal opinion. There were some good moments, but the rest was bad. The movie left me wanting more and left many questions open. If you are big fan of Cage, then I guess you will like the movie.
Death Race (2008)
Great Action Movie
At first, I wasn't planning to watch Death Race. I wasn't even planning going to movies, but I figure why not watch a movie about cars with guns. Plus we have Jason Statham and his crazy action movies as usual. I just wanted to watch a fun and entertaining flick and Death brings much more than that.
The basic story is about prisoners participating in a brutal sport event called "Death Race". But these are the most dangerous prisoners racing and they will anything to win. Whoever wins all the races, wins his freedom. There is a whole lot more story in the movie, but you see it for yourself.
I was surprised on much story there is in the movie. I was just expecting action packed flick, but there is a good plot just to keep it more interesting. Now the story has its flaws, but for the most part, it was good enough. There is a bit of humor in the, which was good at times and not so good at others.
There is nothing surprising about the performances in the movie. Jason Statham always delivers in his movies and I think he did in this one. It was not a great performance, but a good one. Joan Allen did a great job, but I think she better in the Bourne films. Tyrese Gibson was also good as playing Machine Gun Joe. I think he was the perfect actor for the role.
The action in the movie was great and it was one of the best this year. Every action sequence was great and I don't think there is one that I didn't like. The cars really cool looking, specially the mustang. I love how bad-ass it looked. The weapons on the cars are also cool: from machine guns to flamethrowers to grenade launchers and much more. I thought the action is the best thing in the flick and the audiences won't be disappointed.
Death Race is a great action packed movie. If you are a Jason Statham fan, then I think you will probably enjoy the movie.
Tropic Thunder (2008)
Very Funny
There was a lot of talk about Tropic Thunder before hitting theaters, especially the crazy controversy. Putting all the talk aside, I thought the movie looked hilarious from the trailers and it was even better when I saw the movie. Everybody was hysterical in the film, especially Robert Downey Jr.
The story is about a group of actors, who end up in the jungles of Asia while filming a war movie. While there is more to the story than this, I thought I might not spoil anything for you. The story is simple and it is not so hard to understand when you see the whole film.
Ben Stiller was great as Tugg Speedman. I thought his performance was really funny. I was a little bit surprised on how funny Jack Black was since I'm not a big fan of his movies. He plays Jeff Portnoy and also known as Fatts. Robert Downey Jr. transformation was totally insane, but hilarious at the same time. I never thought he would have been this hysterical. I think he stole the show in the movie. He certainly has a comic side that I haven't seen before. As I was watching the movie, I was trying to find out who was Tom Cruise in the movie. Then I noticed a fat guy with glasses dropping the f-bombs like crazy and there was Cruise. The dance was funny too.
When I saw the movie, I was surprised on how much action the film has. I almost felt like it was an actual action flick. Now the comedy in the movie was one of the best of 2008. Everybody in the movie was hilarious and I couldn't stop laughing until the end. The movie was so funny that I couldn't even hear the dialogue at times because the entire theater was laughing like crazy.
Tropic Thunder is one of the best comedies of the year. It's non-stop laugh until the end and I mean it. If you really want to laugh your heart out, I think Tropic Thunder is the right movie for you. You will not be disappointed.
Pineapple Express (2008)
Awesome
At first, I wasn't really paying any attention to the movie. After watching the trailer, I was definitely going to watch this movie. Seth Rogen is a great comedian actor, but I didn't know anything about James Franco's comic side. After watching the movie, he was funny as hell. His fake hair was so realistic. I thought it was his real though, but obviously it wasn't. Whoever did the hair did a great job.
Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) is a lazy court clerk and a drug user. Every time he needs weed, he goes to his best friend Saul Silver (James Franco) to buy some, specially, one called Pineapple Express. One day, while in his car smoking weed (the pineapple express), Dale witness a murder buy a dirty cop and the city's drug lord. Dale panics and throws the weed out of the window and takes off in his car. He rushes to tell Saul what he saw and they both start running for their lives. Now, the dirty cop wants to kill the witness and sends his trio of bad guys to kill Dale and Saul also.
I thought the story was great and well told. I really like how everything was brought to the end of the film without any confusion. I enjoy the script from the beginning until the end.
Seth Rogen was the right choice for Dale Denton. I thought he was great and delivered a great hilarious performance. But I thought James Franco was amazing as Saul Silver. He really look like a big time drug addict. Every time he was on a scene, I laughed. He is one of the funniest character in the movie.
I really like how the action was mix up with the humor. It wasn't force at all like other comedies. It was perfectly done. I laughed throw the entire movie. There wasn't a minute where I couldn't stop laughing. I thought the action was good though. I was not expecting that much gun firing in the movie.
Pineapple Express is one of the funniest movie this year. Seth Rogen and James Franco were hilarious in the movie, especially Franco. If you are a comedy movie fan, then I believe this movie will leave wanting even more.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)
Not as good as the previous two
I was very excited about the movie. I thought the first two mummy films were great and entertaining. Before watching The Mummy 3, I thought it looked bigger and better than the previous two. After walking out of the theater, I completely change my opinion. I was disappointed with the story, acting, and action. Yes, the action.
Rick O'Connell (Bredan Fraser) is back to fight off a resurrected mummy named Emperor Han (Jet Li). Rick is joined by his son Alex (Luke Ford), wife Evelyn (Maria Bello) and Jonathan (John Hannah). They travel all the way to China and the frigid Himalayas in order to stop the mummy from conquering the world. But in order to complete his mission, Emperor Han awakes a massive 10,000 warriors (Terracota army) to finished the job once and for all. The O'Connells are up against an unstoppable army and an evil Emperor that will do anything to get the job done.
The story was very interesting, but the script was not. I thought they should had focus more on the mummy than Alex's life. I felt like Jet Li didn't have enough screen time or even just the mummy. Another thing that I felt a bit disappointed was the beginning of the movie. I liked how they were introducing Emperor Han and how everything started, but it felt like a documentary after a while.
I had mix reactions about the performance in the movie. I didn't have any problem with Fraser's performance. He fits his character and he was great in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. Maria Bello was not as good as I thought she would be. She did okay, but the accent was kind of weird at times though.
The action and special effects was probably the best thing in the movie. The action sequences were very good, but I thought they could have been better though. I wanted to see longer battles. Like a longer version of Jet Li fighting Michelle Yeoh and Brendan Fraser at the end of the movie. I thought Jet Li should off had a big fight with Fraser. It was suppose to be an epic one-on-one fight, but it fell short. The special effects were good and believable. I didn't have no major problem with the effects what so ever.
The Mummy 3 was a fun movie to watch, but the film has it's flaws. If the the script was better, then I would have given the movie higher rating. While I'm not that interested for the next movie, I am curious to see how it turns out.
The Dark Knight (2008)
I Just Want My Phone Call
After I saw Batman Begins, I became so obsess with movie. Batman Begins was my favorite batman movie, superhero movie and my favorite all-time. For some time, I had mix feelings about the movie when I heard The Joker was the villain. The reason was because I hated The Joker in the original batman movie. When I saw the first photo of Heath Ledger as The Joker, I then became obsess with The Dark Knight. Then I finally walked to the theater and I was blown away when I left the theater.
After cleaning most of the streets in Batman Begins, Bruce Wayne/Batman (Christian Bale) is finally set to finish the job in Gotham City. With the help of Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent/Two Face (Aaron Eckhart) things look better than ever in Gotham until The Joker (Heath Ledger) sends total chaos back in Gotham. Batman is force to cross the line between hero and vigilante that leads to an ultimate showdown between The Joker and Batman.
The story in The Dark Knight is so much better than Batman Begins. There are so many great themes in the movie that people and the world can relate to. Another thing I love about the story is that there is all kind of emotions in it. It was an absolutely thrill ride from the beginning to the end.
The performances in the film are one of the best I've seen this year. After seeing Christian Bale in Batman Begins, I thought he was the best batman yet and he has proved it again in The Dark Knight. Bale did a great job playing Bruce Wayne's multiple personalities. Heath Ledger was absolutely astounding as The Joker. This is The Joker that I wanted to see in a long time. Ledger stole the whole movie and he is on my list for best movie villain. I won't be surprised if he doesn't get an Oscar, but he needs some kind of award for his performance. Your performance will be forever remembered. I thought Maggie Gyllenhaal was great as Rachel Dawes and better than Katie Holmes in BB. But I still think she did a good in BB, unlike others, they she was horrible. Also new in the cast is Aaron Eckhart aka Harvey Dent/Two Face. I really like his acting as Harvey Dent, Two Face was even better. I didn't expect that much from Eckhart, but he did shocked me and fans and did an amazing job.
The action scenes in the movie are awesome. In my opinion, the Batpod chase scene was the best of all. I wasn't really sure about the Batpod before watching the film, but after seeing it on the big screen; I couldn't keep eyes off the damn thing. It is such a cool looking ride.
The Dark Knight is the best superhero movie of the century and the darkest of the century. Heath Ledger performance was mind-blowing, terrifying, and fun as hell as The Joker. In my opinion, He is the best villain of all time. The ending really sets the tone for the whole movie and the music was so amazing. I say bring another installment even if it can't top The Dark Knight. A great story will do it for me.
Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008)
A good thrill ride
I wanted to see the movie in IMAX, since everybody is saying it was amazing, but there isn't a single IMAX theater where I live at. I saw the movie in a regular theater and I thought it was a great thrill ride from the point the journey began. Since the movie open on the same weekend as Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, I wasn't planning to see it. But I just thought why not watch two movies on the same day.
Trevor (Brendan Fraser), a college professor and his nephew Alex (Josh Hutcherson) go on a journey to Iceland to find the missing brother of Trevor. Upon there journey, they meet a girl name Hannah (Anita Briem), who knows the way where Trevor and Alex are heading to. When they finally arrived, they start looking for anything relating to Trevor's brother, but they end up discovering something bigger than ever when a storm force them to go to a cave.
Everybody gave a good performance in the movie. Brendan Fraser was great as Trevor. He was funny, but a very smart person also. Fraser has always been a good actor to me and I thought did a great job in this flick. Josh Hutcherson and Anita Briem did well portraying their characters. There were times where I felt like they weren't as natural as other scenes. But overall, the acting was good enough.
Journey to the Center of the Earth is an amazing thrill ride that will leave you on the edge of your seat. The movie takes you through an incredible journey down beneath the Earth's surface. I thought the creatures were original and seem to fit with the story very well.
Journey to the Center of the Earth is a great fantasy and family movie. I'm really excited to see how the sequel will turn out.
Hancock (2008)
Hancock, Bad Guys
Hancock, Hancock, I wasn't expecting a lot from this movie. In fact, I wasn't even planning to see the movie, but the mall was so boring that I decided to the flick anyways. When I saw the trailer, I thought it looked like a fun summer movie. There was nothing really amazing or intriguing about the movie.
Hancock is a superhero, but a very different one. He is always drinking and the public hates him so much. When bad guys are on the loose or people's life is in danger, he gets the job done, but not without leaving a big mess behind. The thing is that Hancock doesn't care what people think about him, the public had have enough of this guy rude behavior. His life suddenly changes when one day he saves the life of Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), a PR executive. With the help of Embrey, Hancock starts realizing he may have a side he hasn't seen and the side that the public really need.
At first, things going smooth in the story, but then there is a twist in the movie that I thought the director could off done better. I thought it took a while to fully explain everything in the movie. I was getting a little confused when they were trying to pick up after the twist, but I understood everything at the end.
I really liked Will Smith as Hancock. I loved the character and Will Smith did a great job. It wasn't his best performance, but a great one. Jason Bateman was a good choice to play Ray Embrey. I think he did a fine job acting. There were some scenes that he was trying to be humorous, but it didn't worked that well. And there was Charlize Theron, which I thought was great as Mary Embrey.
Hancock has good action scenes and good enough special effects. The movie wasn't really action packed; it was just an average action movie. The special effects were believable, but not realistic. To me, they didn't look as really as other blockbuster films. But that doesn't mean I didn't liked them, I'm so saying they could off been better.
Hancock was a good superhero movie. The only problem that I had was the twist. If it wasn't for that, I would off give the movie a better rating. The movie has good humor, action, and special effects. It wasn't the best superhero film, but a good popcorn summer flick.
Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)
You Woke Up The Baby
Hellboy is back and better than ever. I got very excited after I heard a sequel was coming out. What got me even more pump was when the teaser trailer came out. I was literally counting the days until I saw the movie. When I saw it, I couldn't stop talking about it. The film was beautifully directed and Guillermo Del Toro did an amazing job.
In the original, Hellboy (Ron Perlman) was up against some pretty ugly monsters. In The Golden Army, Hellboy is up against an unstoppable army of creatures, the golden army, and a Prince name Nuada (Luke Goss). There is more to the story than this, but this the farthest I will go. I hate spoiling things.
The storyline of The Golden Army is much bigger and better than the original. What makes the story so amazing is that it takes you to different awesome environments. Along with that, the creatures that Del Toro created were absolutely incredible. That's why I love Del Toro, his creativity and vision of things.
After seeing the first Hellboy, I thought Ron Perlman was the perfect actor. He totally knows the Hellboy character. Selma Blair was also great as Liz Sherman. This time though, she is more involved with the team and Hellboy too. This time around, Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) gets more screen time and is also more involved with the team. Luke Goss was pretty good as Prince Nuada. I really liked the way they did the make-up. His sister, Princess Nuala, is portrayed by Anna Walton, who gave a really good performance too.
The action and special effects in The Golden Army are much better than its predecessor. The fighting scenes were amazing, especially the one with the golden army. What makes the action so good is the humor with it. It makes it more enjoyable and interesting. The effects were pretty damn amazing. They look very realistic and are one of the best I've seen this year.
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army is one of the best summer flicks of 08 and it is a lot of fun. Guillermo Del Toro made another great film and I can't wait when he returns to do Hellboy 3.
Kung Fu Panda (2008)
Great Movie
The last time animated film that I saw was Ratatouille (great movie). So there has been a while since I've seen one. I'm not a big fan of animated film, but every now and then when there is one that I'm interesting in watching, I go and watch it. In this case, Kung Fu Panda. What caught my attention was the idea of a panda doing kung fu, which I though was pretty hilarious.
The story is about a Panda name Po (voice by Jack Black), who is a big fan of kung fu. Sometimes, he dreams fighting bad guys with the legendary Furious Five; Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper, and Monkey. One day, Po's dreams comes true when he is pick to be the Dragon Warrior because the vengeful snow leopard Tai Lung (voice by Ian McShane) breaks lose from prison. Now, he is on the way to confront the dragon warrior. Meanwhile, Po trains with the Furious Five and Master Shifu to save everybody from the evil Tai Lung. There is more to the story, I won't spoil anything.
From the beginning, the movie manages to keep the rhythm going until the end. The story was well told and I really liked how they explain the back story of some of the characters. What I also like about the story was that it has Chinese elements to it. It almost felt like I was watching a kung fu movie, but animated.
I thought the cast of the movie were the right choices and they all did a great job. Jack Black does the voice of Po, the lazy fat panda. I thought he was hilarious through the entire movie. Justin Hoffman was great as the voice of Master Shifu. He was funny, but serious at the same time. The Furious Five were voiced by Jackie Chan (Monkey), Lucy Liu (Viper), Angelina Jolie (Tigress), Seth Rogen (Mantis), and David Cross (Crane). They all were pretty hilarious too.
The action and visuals in the movie were amazing. I thought it was a very action-packed animated movie, which I haven't seen in years. I was really amazed by the animation though. It looks very real and it looked I was watching a live action movie.
Kung Fu Panda is one of the best animated movies I've seen in years. It was absolutely amazing. It has a great story, cast, action, and the animation was incredible. I can't wait for the next movie.
Wanted (2008)
Crazy action+humor=amazing
I was amazed after I saw Wanted. I was expecting Wanted to be a really good movie, but not this great. I was really blown away by what this film brought to the big screen. Sure it does have a matrix style to it, but the humor and twists made it even more interesting and enjoyable.
James McAvoy is Wesley Gibson, a 25-year-old man whose life is miserable as hell. When he is working, his boss always complains regarding his work and his girlfriend cheats on him with his best friend. Gibson is basically nobody until he meets Fox (Angelina Jolie), a member of the Fraternity, a secret society that trains Gibson to develop pretty amazing and find the guy that killed his father. After joining the team, Gibson turns his life around and soon learns that the organization he is in, is not actually what it looks like.
I thought the story was great and really well told. I was very surprised by the twist in the story. The movie wasn't really long, but it still manages to tell the whole story fine and clearly. I thought the director did a great job at that.
The acting in the movie was great. James McAvoy was the perfect choice to play Wesley Gibson. He understood the character and did a great job. I thought Angelina Jolie did a good job as Fox. Some people thought she was bad, but I though she delivered a pretty good performance. Angelina was tough and physical, which I love about her. As for always, Morgan Freeman did a great as Sloan and he made me laugh in some parts of the movie.
Besides the storyline, the action, humor, and special effects were amazing. The action scenes were incredibly entertainment and mind blowing (curving a bullet is pretty cool). The special effects were amazing. I thought the effects were very realistic. The humor is the last thing I love about Wanted. I was seriously not expecting the movie to be so hilarious.
Wanted is one of the best summer movie and it delivers in every way. This is one hell of a ride and I can't wait for the sequel.
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008)
Better than the original
The pevensie siblings are back in a bigger, better, and darker adventure in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. After loving The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, I was sure that I was going to see Prince Caspian in theaters. When I saw the first film, I noticed that it wasn't the first book, which I found a little strange. Since I never read the Prince Caspian book, I'm just going to talk about the film itself.
At the end of the first movie, Peter Pevensie (William Moseley), Edmund Pevensie (Skandar Keynes), Susan Pevensie (Anna Popplewell), and Lucy Pevensie (Georgie Henley) got back to the real world after discovering the magical Narnia land. One year later, they return to Narnia, only to discover that 1,300 thousand years had pass during their absence. Now, most of the Narnians had become extinct and the land under control by the Kind Miraz (Sergio Castellitto) and the Telmarines (Miraz's army). Peter and his siblings soon met Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes), who has been running away from his evil uncle Miraz from preventing Miraz killing him and putting his newborn son on his place. With the help of Prince Caspian and the reminders Narnians, the siblings go on to find the missing Aslan and rescue Narnia from the evil King Miraz.
I think the storyline in Prince Caspian is much better than the original. I really like the humor in the story. Even though it didn't have a lot of humor, but at least it has some. I also liked the dark elements in the story. It felt more like an adult fantasy movie than a kid fantasy flick.
There was nothing really big in the performance from the actors. Everybody gave a good solid performance. I thought Ben Barnes was a great choice to play Prince Caspian.
The special effects and the action were amazing. The effects were very realistic and than the first film. I thought the action scenes were more intense and violent than it's predecessor.
Overall, Prince Caspian was a great movie and I think is definitely better than the first movie. I can't wait until the movie comes out in 2010.
The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Incredible Movie
I got so mad when I went to see this movie on opening weekend because a blackout came and ruin everything. I left the movie probably half way and I was irritated. There was no way that the movie will start immediately so everybody left and obviously with their refund. The theater was close for a few hours so I knew I had to come the next weekend. Then comes next weekend and I still had in mine that I was going to watch about 30 minutes into the movie again, but I didn't care, it was a great 30 minutes.
I was hoping this hulk movie to be more action-packed than Ang Lee's The Hulk. I wanted a true hulk movie and close enough towards its comic book. That's what the original didn't have and that's what The Incredible Hulk has.
The Incredible Hulk brings a new everything to the big screen; cast, director, story, etc. This time, Edward Norton (Bruce Banner) is in South America (Brazil) trying to find a cure for the gamma radiation that destroyed his cells and turns him into a totally different person when he is irritated and angry. Meanwhile, William Hurt (General Thunderbolt Ross) is on Banner's tail when he finds out that Banner is in Brazil. All hell breaks lose when Thunderbolt Ross brings a pack of U.S. soldiers to capture Banner. Things then get even uglier when a new powerful monster known as The Abomination causes chaos on anybody who steps on his way.
I really like the beginning of the movie because it was short and sweet to the point. It explains the events that happened in Bruce Banner's lab incident in seconds. Unlike Ang Lee's The Hulk when it probably took 30 or more minutes to explain the whole thing.
The new cast did an amazing job in the movie, especially Edward Norton. He did a great as Bruce Banner. Before, I was not sure if this was the right choice, but now I'm definitely sure it was. I also thought Liv Tyler gave a good performance as Betty Ross. She gave a solid performance as I expected. Tim Roth and William Hurt did their job too. Roth did great as Emil Blonsky.
Besides the story and acting, I thought the action and special effects were incredible. The action sequences between the hulk and military were amazing, but the final battle was so damn fun and great to watch. I totally think the Abomination and hulk fight should win an award for best fight.
Overall, The Incredible Hulk is one of the best superhero movies of all-time and I'm sure hulk fans will not be disappointed.
The Strangers (2008)
One of the best horror movies of 2008
Last year, there were a bunch of horror movies that came out. This year, there are probably half or less horror films that are coming out. The last horror movie that I saw before The Strangers was The Ruins, which was awesome. I'm a big horror fan and I was definitely going to see The Strangers when I saw the trailer.
I was very psyched before seeing the movie because I haven't seen a horror movie in a while. What caught my attention the most about the movie was that it is based on true events. Movies that are based on true events or stories always catches my attention, especially horror ones.
The Strangers is about a couple Liv Tyler (Kristen) and Scott Speedman (James) who decided to spend a romantic night in house near the woods. Little do they know that three mask strangers are doing whatever they can to ruin the night and gives them a scare they will never forget! If they live! You will probably be asking yourself, who are these three people? And why they are doing this to the couple? But in horror movie, people just want to get scare and that's what I think The Strangers delivers.
The Strangers is not actually scary, it is just a jumpy kind of horror movie, but a lot though. What I like about the movie is that is has a lot of suspense and thrills, which I love about horror films.
Since we don't really know anything about the 3 mask killers, I thought they were creepy and a little scary too. One thing that I thought was good the way acted was that they were very unpredictable. You didn't really know when they are going to attack.
Overall, The Strangers is one of the best horror movies that I have seen in a while and truly it delivers. The ending of the film tells me that a sequel might come out, which I would love to watch.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
Good Enough
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was the film that everyone was getting hype about before it came out and I honestly don't know were all that hype came from. I understand that the old Indy films were classics, but Harrison Ford is just too old to play Indiana Jones now. It would have been better if Indy 4 came out years ago.
Before seeing the movie, I didn't have high expectations for Indiana Jones 4. I was expecting the movie to be an average movie. In my opinion, there was nothing really catchy about the movie. After I saw the film, my expectations were just right.
I thought Indiana Jones 4 was entertaining and an enjoyable film. The story was well developed and it caught my attention. The fact that they took realistic ideas from today was kind of a thumps up for the movie. The acting in the movie was solid and I don't think there was a great performance from Harrison Ford. He is a great actor, but this one was not his best or worst. There were some really nice special effects in the movie. I thought that was a plus in the flick.
One of the things that I didn't like about the movie was that there were scenes that the humor didn't work out at all. It really annoyed me because some scenes were kind of long. I'm not going to tell you what scenes were you will probably know what I'm talking about.
Overall, Indiana Jones 4 was a good pop-corn flick that I enjoyed for the most part. The film that I have high expectations is The Dark Knight. That's probably the film everybody wants to see after Indy 4 disappointment some fans.
Iron Man (2008)
One of the best comic movies ever made
Last summer season, fans and critics were disappointed by what Spider-Man 3 brought to the big screen. This year, the highly anticipated comic book blockbuster movie Iron Man blew fans and even critics away. According to the critics, Iron Man is considered one of the best comic book movies of all-time and possibly the best of all-time. I totally agree with them and this is what comic book films should be like. Fun and entertaining! Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark) is a billionaire, genius inventor and a playboy man who is kidnapped and forced to build a missile by some crazy terrorists. Instead of building the missile, Stark uses his creative and genius mind and builds a high-tech suit of armor. He battles the people that kidnapped and escapes from the nightmare. When things get out of hand at his weapon manufacturing company, Stark thinks there are better things to do than just weapons, become the Iron Man.
I thought the storyline was great and well develop. It flew well and is not a complicated story to understand. What I like about the plot is that there are major reasons why Stark wanted to be Iron Man. I'm not going to say any reason because I don't want to spoil it for you.
By far, the best thing in Iron Man was the brilliant performance by Downey Jr. The way he acted brought great things to the film. Downey Jr. was born to play this role and he absolutely masters it. The supporting cast did a great job also. Gwyneth Paltrow was a good choice to play Virginia 'Pepper' Potts. She was natural and delivered a pretty good performance. Jeff Bridges did a nice job also. He played a good villain, not the greatest one, but a good one. And finally, Terrence Howard as Jim Rhodes or Rhodey or whatever you want to call it. I can't wait to see him as War Machine.
The visual effects in the movie are amazing and very realistic. The CGI work was also great. I really like the shine in Iron Man. It looks real and that's what you are looking for when it comes to f/x and CGI. The action and humor in the film is incredible. Especially the humor! You'll probably laugh through most of the flick.
Iron Man kicked off the 2008 summer season with great entertainment and it delivers in every possible way. The film, in my opinion is way better than the Spider-Man and X-Men movies. Even though I'm a fan of both trilogies, Iron Man is those movies that you want to see it a million times. If you anything to do at your house, I suggest you spent two hours at the movies and see Iron Man.
The Forbidden Kingdom (2008)
Great Family Film
I was excited before this movie came out and that excitement turn into an enjoyment. This movie is great and entertaining. Watching Jackie Chan and Jet Li for the first time in the big screen was amazing. They both did a great job portraying their characters. Especially Chan. He stole the movie most of the time. I thought Michael Angarano also did a great job as the lost traveler (Jason Tripitikas). And the rest of the cast did a great performance as well.
What I loved the most about The Forbidden Kingdom are the fight scenes. They were enjoyable and awesome to watch. I also like how the director combines fantasy and kung fu in the movie. I thought it brought a nice style into it. The film has very good special effects and they were nice and simple. Nothing that big! Overall, The Forbidden Kingdom is a great family movie and is absolutely a must see film. I recommend this film to every Chan and Li fan in the world. It won't disappoint you.
The Ruins (2008)
My new favorite horror movie
I have been waiting for this experience to come for a long time and it definitely worth the wait. The Ruins is disturbing, creepy, scary, and so damn different from other horror films I've seen in my life. From the beginning to end, the film kept me on really edge of my seat. Of all the creepy and disturbing scenes that The Ruins have, there is one that I felt through my whole body and I'm sure I will never forget this experience. You will know what I'm talking about when you see the movie.
The movie has gore, but now I understand that's not the only way to do a great horror movie. Besides being such a great terrifying movie, The Ruins has a great cast that turns the film into a whole new level. The way the actors and actress acted made the flick much more interesting and realistic. And when talking about being realistic, the CGI did an excellent job doing that. The vines were scary, frightening, and smart too. At least, that's what I think. I never expected these plants imitating cell phones ringing sound and people's voice. I was really pleased with the sound effects. Everything felt so real.
Overall, The Ruins is now my new all-time favorite horror movie and I recommended to every horror fan in the planet.
Doomsday (2008)
Awesome
I wasn't sure what movie to watch for this weekend. At first, I was going for Never Back Down, then the Doomsday trailer was kind of interesting and the movie kept popping out of my mind. When I went to see Doomsday, I wasn't sure what to expect because the storyline is a bit similar to other movies. I finally saw the movie and it was a hell of a ride. The action in Doomsday is non-stop and the humor was great. Even though the film has several elements from other movies, I thought it was really good how the director put everything together. Doomsday is surely entertaining and is one hell of a ride. The film has great gore and some creepy and disgusting scenes. If you are a gory action fan, Doomsday is the movie for you.
Jumper (2008)
Good Movie
Even though Jumper had some little mistakes, the movie was quite entertaining. The beginning of the film kind of left me hanging and it took a bit to get to the point. When the point got all straighten out, it was all good then. The jump effects were amazing and the effect sounds that follow it were incredible. The special effects were outstanding and are probably the best thing in the movie. The little comedy scenes were pretty funny too. Jumper doesn't have non-action scenes, but the normal action that Jumper had were very exciting.
A lot of fans said the acting was crappy, but I thought it was good. The best performance in the movie was by Jamie Bell. He was just amazing as Griffin.
After the film was over, there was one question that didn't have an answer. Why David (Hayden Christensen) and Griffin?s parents are are paladins and they aren't? Or they are just supposed to be born with that religion. The scene were David and Griffin are talking in a silver car kind of left me thinking that might be the answer to my question.
Overall, Jumper was an average movie that was entertaining and enjoyable. It could have been better though. Don't think too much about the ending because it?s obvious they did it for the second part.
