Malevolence (2003)
Not as bad as all the haters say
Well I like this film. I bought it about a year ago and just pulled it out of my collection and watched it now. It was better than I expected. Everybody complains about the music. While it might have been slightly loud in spots, it served it's purpose well in heightening the tension. There was good use of 5.1 surround as well, with sound effects moving among the speakers, and making you feel quite "there".
The acting wasn't bad either. In fact, for a no-name cast in an obscure horror movie, I didn't see anything wrong with it at all.
The story was good. It did have a couple moments where the killer could have been finished off a couple times, but no, silly movie characters leave him on the ground with only one hit instead of repeatedly bashing him in the head. A definite "nobody would have done that" moment.
But on the whole, I thought it was a suspenseful horror film.
Flesh-Eating Mothers (1988)
Enjoyable low-budget horror
This is mostly a rebuttal to all the negative reviews this movie got. Warning: there are spoilers in here, so don't read on if you don't want some of the movie spoiled.
I can't believe so many people hated this movie. What did you expect from a movie called "Flesh Eating Mothers"? Academy Award winning material? It's got a schlock-horror title, it's going to be schlock-horror! Anybody who watched this movie, obviously chose it because of it's title. And that's exactly what you got - Flesh Eating Mothers!
Aside from the fact that it involves... possession, I guess you could say... the premise is pretty unique. Where else have you seen a movie about mild mannered mothers turning into raving cannibals after contracting a sexually transmitted disease?
Granted, the acting is sub-par in a lot of areas, but I found many of the scenes quite funny. How can you not laugh at Rinaldi's mom ending his punishment early and letting him out of his room to have dinner, and asking him if he knows how veal is made, while at the same time tenderizing him to become veal himself... and then bites him on the forehead! The acting in that scene was fine for what it was! It was mostly supposed to be funny, and it succeeded! I don't care about the glass of milk. It's a magic glass. :')
Another scene where the awkward guy/girl are sitting on a park bench getting high and talking for pretty much the first time: Guy:"so what's eating you?" Girl:"I saw my father kissing a strange woman, I mean he had his hands all over her" Guy:"that's pretty bad." Girl:"not as bad as seeing my mom >bursts out laughing from the pot< eat my baby brother!" ... Girl:"No, no, I'm serious. I saw my mother eating my baby brother."
The attempt to convey the double emotion in there was a nice touch, and the way the actress pulled it off in the movie was great I thought.
One reviewer below mentioned a midget. There were no midgets in this movie. Another said that this was a Christian splatter film. While it did mention God, that doesn't mean it was a "Christian" movie. By that token, The Exorcist and Frailty would be Christian movies. And to the reviewer that asked "what does this movie say about adultery? That the men can get away with it and the women can't?" Well, the man didn't survive to tell the tale in the end, did he? And even if there is a bit of one-sidedness to it, the movie is called Flesh Eating MOTHERS. If the men turned cannibal too, it'd be a different movie. And it'd be missing that dichotomy of the fairer sex - mother's no less - being made to be the violent flesh-ripping beasts instead of the usual male in the role.
People talked about how badly the movie was made. If you want to see worse acting, check out "Redneck Zombies" (a good movie in its own right). If you want to see worse acting, script, and plot, check out "Children Shouldn't play with Dead Things". You'll think "Flesh Eating Mothers" is a masterpiece by comparison!
Desecration (1999)
A good mix of atmosphere, fright, and humor
Why does this only have a 3.7 rating when it has 5 positive reviews and only 1 negative? Well I'm going to add another positive review...
Pretty much what everybody below who had a positive review had to say, is true. I'll just add that nobody seemed to mention the humor here and there in the film. Or was I the only one who thought parts of it were funny? It mostly had to do with the old lady. I thought she was great! And the opening death scene... its campiness (hinted at by the one dissenter below) translated into hilarity for me. Well, maybe not hilarity, but amusing... :')
But of course this movie is no comedy, it's quite the chilling and atmospheric horror film that Argento fans seem to like. If a little bit hard to figure out, as well. I didn't know it was Dante Tomaselli's first movie until reading it here just now. I'll have to look for his other stuff.
Switchblade Sisters (1975)
Much better than I was expecting!
A persons impression of a movie sometimes depends on what they're expecting before they see it. You gotta go into this one expecting a low budget poorly acted 70's action film. If you do, you'll be quite impressed! The acting isn't all that bad. Lace can get a little annoying, talking through clenched teeth like she does, but she acts pretty well during her softer parts. And the movie is funny! I was not expecting to actually laugh out loud during it, but I did in several spots. This movie is kind of like The Warriors meets Fast Times at Ridgemont High meets L7. :')
And there were even a couple touching moments to the film that I wasn't expecting. The characters are interesting too. I can see why Quentin Tarantino likes this film. If you are a fan of his, and don't mind B movies, I think you'll like this.
Razor Blade Smile (1998)
Best non-traditional vampire film since Near Dark
I can't understand why everybody is dumping on this film. Bad acting? The acting was fine for an independent film. Bad fangs? They were perfect I thought. Eileen Daly is gorgeous, and I don't mind seeing her red lips sprouting fangs left and right! She did a great job. Very dramatic and very sexy throughout the entire film.
Some people said there was no story.... I simply can't understand this. There definately was a story. It might have been a little confusing, and there was a surprise ending, but the story was there.
This was one of the best non-traditional vampire films I've seen since "Near Dark". "From Dusk Till Dawn" was a good one, but that wasn't quite as much a vampire film as it was an action film. Bram Stoker's from Coppola was traditional, and John Carpenter's was again, more of an action film. Dracula 2000 was good, but again action and semi-traditional (It had Van Helsing). Razor Blade Smile was first and foremost a vampire film, and it's action scenes played a secondary role. There's plenty of neck-biting and blood spurting, decapitations, sex (including a nice view of what Eileen is hiding under her busty outfit!), and even lesbianism! What is *not* to like about this film!? :')
