Lina de Lima (2019)
Solier is a beauty.
Slow to start. First half felt like grasping at air trying to find the plot, a conflict, a character or even a tone to grab onto. Once the story was more or less in place, it was easy flow with Lina and her story. I found myself reflecting on the things I might think about in her situation after realizing the musical breaks were where her mind and inner self meandered off to to make decisions. I don't think the music drove the story too much and were only a little bit helpful to building Lina as a character. There's a handful of monotony of everyday working life. And some scenes looking for dates. Which I take to mean that she just wants more for her life in general.
Around the time when the pool is ruined is when the pacing felt a lot better. Probably half way through. It's likely because there was something she actually needed to fix. Her son situation and the small conflicts as well as looking for people to have sex with didn't pack as much emotion. I think it's because there wasn't enough time devoted to exploring those facets. But we have that unfinished pool, almost like a character throughout the whole film. Thinking on it now, maybe the pool is a metaphor for this time in Lina's life. You're a vessel, you can be ruined, you can be fixed, you can be full, you will bring some joy and be fun, and you will inevitably deteriorate.
In the end, I am only thinking of her face. And by that I mostly mean, that every shot was well thought out. There seemed to be quite a few tight shots where Lina's face did the acting. So while the first half of this film left much to be desired for me, it was lovely to look at Solier.
