Shooter (2016)
Braindead, poorly written, overly patriotic bulls*it.
One of those facepalm-level terrible shows. Unless you are a simpleton, patriotic, pro- NRA, redneck - just say no to this. This show is essentially the physical culmination of what non-US people think that the stereotypical US moron would enjoy. When you keep that in mind, you could actually get a laugh out of this. :)
The show presumes the audience has IQ of 70 in every single turn. It's extremely shallow in both characters and presentation.
Check eg. Generation Kill, Homeland, The Pacific or Band of Brothers instead. Even first seasons of 24 were GREAT compared to this.
Battleship (2012)
People seem to miss that the movie was made with tongue in cheek. Best popcorn action in years!
After watching Guardians of the Galaxy and feeling disappointed (6/10), I started to ponder about the great popcorn action flicks - and Battleship popped up.
The movie is an utter joke - no question about it. But apparently in such subtle manner that it's not obvious to everyone, considering the rather abysmal rating.
Absolutely everything in the movie just slams "tongue in cheek"- mentality to your face, from start to the end. The movie was extremely entertaining for that simple fact. Watch it and just consider everything from the direction to the actual dialog. It's almost like they're acting for the audience, instead of "in the movie".
I certainly consider Battleship better entertainment than eg. Indiana Jones & Crystal Skull, the two latest Star Treks or the three previous Star Wars movies.
Rectify (2013)
Drama masterpiece in every sense - subtle, silent, natural and realistic
Rectify is a series for the intelligent audience with patience. As any proper drama, it's character driven with clever directing to spice things up, without foisting anything down the audiences throat. It requires and deserves your full attention in all the meanings of the word.
It's not something to be watched with "bunch of friends, while having few beers" or while doing something else and every now and then peaking the screen, like you could with most of the series.
If you enjoyed series like Wire, Crash or Deadwood you really should check Rectify out. The production team has managed to set the new top- shelf standard for QUALITY drama as it manages to convey feeling and motives to the audience like no other.
10/10.
Europa Report (2013)
Very underrated movie. I liked this better than Gravity!
This movie is truly underrated. Same happened with a series called Crash. After noticing the sub-par ratings, I knew I had to write my review. :)
I am 31, educated and I've been watching movies and series actively for as long as I can remember. I consider myself part of the "intelligent" audience whom can occasionally enjoy a block buster action flick. Still to me the most enjoyable movies tend to be the well directed and written drama, like Into the Wild, The Wrestler, Munich, American Gangster and so on.
I was truly impressed how the production team managed to craft something this mesmerizing with the minimal budget they apparently had. Characters felt real and there wasn't any awkward, overacted drama.
The movie is very well paced and it kept me hooked since start to the end. The drama arc was superbly implemented as the suspension thickened as the movie progressed. The sense of loneliness and sadness struct through.
I didn't find any plot holes/annoyances, if you skip the obvious that the crew manages to communicate with Earth without any delay.
Europa Report isn't a block buster action sci-fi for the drooling masses, but instead it is a sort of a minimalistic movie which delivers a surprisingly strong emotional punch.
Recommended! Check it out!
Homeland: The Weekend (2011)
One of the best episodes in TV history
I am not writing a review about the episode, but more of a recap what I felt.
I have seen plenty of series and movies. And when I say plenty, I really do mean it. I consider myself as part of the "intelligent audience" whom can occasionally watch a "popcorn blockbuster" but what I am looking for is proper drama - motives and feelings.
I felt compelled to write a few words here, since this episode was just stunningly great. It has been years since I felt something similar. In case you are wondering that was the "original finale", Adama's court, of Battlestar Galactica season 2. Later on producers moved that to be an episode in the middle since they thought that it wouldn't be enough for the audience whom would look for that "popcorn action ending". My point being - the drama was stunning there as it was here.
If you enjoy proper drama like The Wire or Crash (TV) you will enjoy Homeland. That much is certain.
Thanks for creating this, dear production team. I actually felt it.
