All the Light We Cannot See (2023)
Better than I Expected
After reading some reviews, some of which were quite harsh, I was genuinely surprised with how enjoyable this is as a miniseries. I have not read the book, so did not know what to expect. I agree with a number of the critics on the harsher points, e.g., the dialogue is a little schmaltzy and the accents (or total lack of) do not fit with WWI France, particularly for an area that is so historical. The ending is a little sugary and soft, most definitely not sophical. Personally, I would have wanted to know more about the history and the legacy of the "Fire" stone, and what its significance was/is to the overall theme. That said, as an acting debut, I thought Loberti was off the chart phenomenal. The depth of emotion in the face of a blind person is just outstanding. I thought the photography/cinematography was very well done and totally disagree with critics that said it was Nazi CGI. If you have studied or read any history about France during that period, the atrocities by the SS were vast...taking over people's homes, killing families, stealing money and food and general pillaging, raping women etc., the war crimes were off the chart...all while rounding up Jews to put them on trains to concentration camps. The series stays away from some of the most brutal depths the Nazis went to in WWI Europe while showing the emotional impact it took on the citizens of France.
Ripley (2024)
Echoing the praise for the cinematography
As a photographer, I am blown away at the cinematography. The noir lighting and camera angles add depth and drama to each scene. Tom's facial expressions shift so radically from menacing to 'soft.' The cat and the robe are such big characters in the drama. Every small detail is enhanced by an absolute fidelity to light and shadows that just draws you in to every scene. The remarkable camera angles create pure artistic beauty and expression. Tom's completely nonchalant manner of dealing with each situation is creepy and so well acted. The blood scene after Freddie's murder is pure perfection. Each and every action he takes, from the spontaneous murders to the move to cover is macabre and intense. Bravissimo.
Is It Cake? (2022)
Very fun show
I don't understand that harsh reviews on here. This is a very fun show. I agree that judging from a distance makes it a little harder to believe. As for Mikey, I just think he's trying to have some fun. It seems like anything that's just pure fun for someone else needs to be attacked nowadays. It's ok for people to have fun and enjoy themselves. Most of the baker interviews are uplifting, even when they hit the skids in the competition. I can see why kids like the show so much. It's just simple and good fun. It's time to just chill out and watch and have some laughs and enjoyment. So chillax y'all and have fun guessing if it's cake!
What Jennifer Did (2024)
A Why Done It Crime Drama
It's a bit understandable and at the same time, not. A story about tiger parents but a daughter who clearly is mentally disturbed. The hardest part to believe, even though this supposedly was in 2010, that younger people would not understand how phones are modern day surveillance devices that track and record every single thing and mapping out an entire murder plot in text messages. Some people have said that there is not much more information than what is on the Wikipedia page for Jennifer Pan. The victim's representative calling it 'A love story gone wrong' is a bit disturbing. And the kicker is the woman's claim of being innocent. It's impossible to feel sorry for her.
Stormy (2024)
Different
Didn't know what to expect other than crying and whining from all the big tough MAGA dudes taking a break from watching anime in mom's basement, but the documentary shows someone who grew up broken but actually made something of herself. She's an intelligent woman and not afraid to stand up to a bloated, orange letch.
Her desire to be a good mother after getting robbed by her own parents are to be commended. Her sacrifices to keep her daughter out of the creepy media are admirable. It's so painful listening to the bleating from Mango Mussolini and his non stop blathering lies. The Avenatti stuff is also a bit of karma. Forgot about the FBI stuff too. Gee, how could that have happened?
Expect MAGA tears.
Heroes: Chapter Eleven 'The Eclipse - Part 2' (2008)
Eclipse?
Rewatching this, I forgot how much this is where the series started spinning out of control. The insane defying of physics with the "eclipse" is disturbing. When an eclipse happens, the most it will last is around three minutes total and cover perhaps around a fifty mile width along its path. To have one occur in Kansas and Haiti at the exact same moment is physically impossible. To have it go on for an hour is just ridiculous. You would think that the writers of sci-fi would have more fidelity to physical reality than to just create something so blatantly impossible. This, plus all the bleeding and no death, it just goes into the sublime. Quite disappointing.
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
It Does Grind Slowly
I had not read the book, but I listened to over 10 hours of podcasts so I was anxious to see the flick. It grinds slowly but it is mostly a slalom down a creepy morality slope. De Niro as Hale is just creepy and hard to believe. That anyone could be that corrupt and malicious, while simultaneously feigning love and righteousness is hard to fathom. The acting is absolutely outstanding. I'm glad I spent the money and time to watch it. I did not think the movie was preachy and it showed genuine grief and horror from the perspective of the Osage. The more you learn about the actual story, the more you wonder about the European settlers and their sense of entitlement and their hunger for power. Make some popcorn and keep the remote handy for bio breaks. 👍👍
The Tinder Swindler (2022)
Pathetic
Three pathetically shallow women in a race to redefine what the word Ditz means. They literally were asking for it. How unbelievably sad and stupid can one person be? Find out by watching this pathetic sad sack story of three women who can't think straight. I mean, who wouldn't get $25K in cash to just have for walking around money? It's just so unbelievably stupid and insane.
I honestly can't use enough characters and words to fill up an actual review because it is that bad. What rhymes with Ditz? It's sad to know that women this pathetically shallow actually exist on planet earth. Hey baby, I live you, here's my Amex platinum card. WTAF.
The Shrink Next Door (2021)
Terrible Show
Two talented actors in a stupid, unfunny and poorly written debacle. Boo. Beyond suck.
If at some point Ike would get punched in the face, I would feel better.
