Last One Standing (2022)
Prepared for non stop laughter
I have been waiting for this when it came across my recommendation list.
The standup comedians in this series are very well known in Japan already, either they have been in the industry for a long time, or those who just won M-1 Grand Prix recently.
While some of the jokes are very Japanese based, so it may not be funny for other people, this would be the same for all comedy, but for those who are used to the Japanese comedy would find non-stop laughter.
The story comes in 8 parts, with comedians eliminated in every episodes until the very end. In one way, this is like a competition of who is the best comedian, through a Netflix series.
I am a fans of Shôtarô Mamiya and in 2019 he was in a drama called "The Kings of Laughter" so it was nice to see him in a comedy show that involves other comedian.
I was surprised to see Masahiro Higashide, whom, although is a great actor, is not highly sorted in Japan at the moment due to his behaviour. So it would be also interesting to see how this would have an impact on the ratings in Japan.
All in all, an excellent series and I couldn't stop laughing. Awesome if you needed some relaxing time.
Our Skyy (2018)
All the BL Characters under the same Sky
This is a series of the five BL Series all rolled into one, that is not part of the original story or the novels, but based on the characters in the five series,
- Pick and Room from Senior Secret Love Puppy Honey
- In and SUn from My Dear Loser
- Tee and Mork from Cause You're My Boy
- Pete and Kao from Kiss Me the Series and Dark Blue Kiss
- Arthit and Kongpop from SOTUS
All the characters are not connected to each other, though there was a cross over between Pick and Rome's characters and Pete and Kao's for a short scene.
The highlight of this short series is undoubtedly Arthit and Kongpop, whom we know in Sotus , Arthit have always struggled to express his love towards Kongpop. This series we saw a breakthrough, as them and everyone found a new way to grow in their relationship.
It's a cute additional story to the main story, espeically if you miss the characters and wanting more.
Theory of Love (2019)
One of OffGun's finest work
Whilst Puppy Honey is the introduction to OffGun, this is the introduction to OffGun's real chemistry online. The series is very close to the novel itself so anyone who loves the novel won't be disappointed.
Yes, many people talked about the ridiculousness of Third letting water run over him, being a bit dramatic, but in one way it him drowning in the sorrow, in the running water, the sound, and in his own tears.
Every epsiode makes reference to a movie, Thai, American or even French, while they are creating their own stories of love, friendship and heartache.
The story is also two parts in essence, Third's point of view and him persuing Khaid through love and heartache. Part two of Khaid's persuing love.
Gun is already an award winning actor so we know he can act. His tears moves you, we cried with him as he go through heartache, again and again; we laugh with him when he finally found love.
Off's chemistry playing against Gun was amazing. Watching him waiting for Third, or that realisation that there is where his heart is, and vowed never to hurt him again, you just want to go and give him a hug!
This is a rom-com that you want to come back to over and over again. A must watch for all BL fans and anyone who wants to get to know why OffGun is one of the most highly rated Thai BL shopped couples.
Senior Secret Love: Puppy Honey (2016)
Cutest Ron-Com with very two different outcome
There are two storylines here
1 - a Boy-Girl relationship involving veterinarian students and a pet
2 - a Boy-Boy relationship involving veterinarian student and his senior.
This is the story that introduced us to OffGun - the ultimate duo and BL couple for GMMTV. Whilst they weren't the first BL couple in GMMTV, but back then when GMMTV was still exploring whether BL has a market, this was refreshing. They were very cute, and their chemistry, though in their infancy, was awesome.
Of course, some of the long time Babiis (fans of OffGun) would know that this is the series that gave Off Jumpol the name "Papii". According to Gun, he was new to GMMTV at that stage and Off was looking after him like his "dad" (in Thai 'phaw' ), and so it was a word play of "phaw" and "Puppy".
If you wanted to following all of OffGun series, this is a must watch.
3 Will Be Free (2019)
Good mixture of thrill and romance
The story involved a rebellious mafia son who have taken the grunge against his father for being involved with the death of his mom; a male sex worker who had a relationship with the mafai's wife and was ordered to be killed by the mafia, and a hostess who unwillingly got involved.
They tried to run away from the chaos for their life, only to get back to it to seek revenge. They eventually succeeded, their unlikely freindship remained though they have gone separate path.
The show involves three-some, bisexual and gay character, and friendship. Along the way they've also alearnt what friendship is all about.
It is a cute little series that you could watch as a filler if you are looking for something to watch. It is quite cute to see Tay Tawan in a dorky character and as he started to take over the father's business, he has started to dress a little more revealing but not loose his dorkiness.
Joss was an excellent gigiloo, and it would be absolutely interesting to see him perform in this type of role again in Mama GoGo.
Not Me (2021)
What is equity?
This drama explored the injustice unfolding in Thaland, and perhaps the same at many other countries; capitalism, human rights, LGBTQ rights, disabilities right, power imbalance, police brutality, and corruption. But is the fight worth fighting for?
As. Director Anucha Boonyawatana explored the complex social issues of equality and equity through art using well known anti-government artists, drama, paired with excellent sountrack, in an attempt to discuss these complex issues. It wasn't hard to find real life stories in Thailand to match every theories being discussed. Using a gang of five young University students as we walk alongside with them in the journey to fight injustice, the question was raised - what happened after those we are fighting against have fallen? Will there be another one again, or is the issues ever resolved? Martin Luther King Jr died for racism, and yet racism is still deeply ingrained in our society.
Unlike typical Thai Boy Love drama, gender is fluid. Male and famle are equally powerful in their own rights. Off Jumpol and Gun Atthaphan have played as love interest many times and their chemistry is impeckbable; their acting have improved dramatically, with Gun acting as twins, Black and White, who has very different personalities.
Fluke Gawin Caskey as a fallen policeman is an work of art; his struggle to understand his identity and where he fits, being completely vulnerable against Yok, as played by First Kanaphan Puitrakul, watching them acting against each other is beautiful and sad to watch.
The female characters, often seen as disaposable in BL dramas, Eugune, Namo and Nuch helps strengthen the story, and are the backbones of these young men.
While we watch romance blossoms, characters changed, and finding ways to fight the fight, we admire the bravery of.all those involved. This topic is no easy topic to discuss in modern day Thailand; a tyrant government mixed with corruption. Anucha did say that much of these discussions can only be explored academically, and much were taken out because of censorship.
Mixing social issues with entertainment, unfortunately there are only 14 episodes and it feels a little rush, when there are so much more to discuss. Must watch but you will definitely need time to digest the story.
