Driven (2001)
I wasn't terribly impressed. (POSSIBLE SPOILERS)
19 January 2002
Warning: Spoilers
I found the finished product to be short of the potential its storyline. The characters tended to be very harsh and they tended to be very open about thier goals. It made sense for the couple that broke up after three years to be very vulnerable and for the reporter, as a third party, to analyze her observations to Stallone's character. For Stallone to be so open with the reporter was a bit of a stretch. The relationship between Kip and Sophia seemed too serious too fast, given her reluctance in the first bar scene.

The ultimatium which ups the stakes comes over an hour into the movie. Starting there, with a series ultimatium instead of a one-race ultimatium could have built tension that was never came into being through the whole thing. The title "Driven" implies an intensity that was lacking.

There are some techincal issues with stunts being overdone, such as the shot that looks like a flying tire could hit a low-flying airplane and the newspaper rack going flying in the chase scene.

In my opinion, Stallone's monologue after the chase was somewhat rushed.

I desperately wanted to know more about why the brother was so controlling of his younger brother. That was possibly one of the most intriguing storylines in the thing, and it was almost totally ignored from the standpoint of exposition. My husband wanted more exposition of Burt Reynolds' character.

The story was that Cathy left Joe when he stopped raising Cain and became a "nice guy", but Memo, her new husband, is never shown to be a cainraiser. Why the inconsistency?

Sly chose an interesting story, but I find the finished product tepid at best.

Disney at its best

This is a hopeful Cinderella story, but that's okay because everyone, including the writer, the cast and the crew know that. The film is exactly what it intends to be. Garry Marshall made some good choices (check out the deleted scenes on the DVD), and Julie Andrews was both regal and real. Although jealousy and a weird neighbor keep it on this planet, it is safe for viewers of all ages. If you're looking for a pure feel-good fun, this is recommended.

Very cute

Animation has finally been done right--there's a real plot, it's funny for the grown-ups and safe for the kids (as opposed to some of Shrek's questionable choices). If you're the type to find them and love them, there are some cool messages in the plot. If you're the type to enjoy a movie without thinking too much, it works. It also gives parents a whole new spin the next time they have to banish monsters in the middle of the night.

One stellar performance

The love story here is cute and Tim Robbins has some nice moments, but the reason to watch the movie is Walter Matthau as Albert Einstien. (Meg Ryan has a typical Meg-Ryan-nice-girl performance. What that means, exactly, is up to the reader to decide.) Matthau makes the physicist humble, scheming, fun, and generally endearing. Plus, he and his peers have most of the great lines (e.g. "Don't let your brain interfere with your heart".)
