The Night Manager (2016)
Not usually a fan of the genre ... but this is incredible
I love a good mystery, but usually spy thrillers leave me cold and are just too over-the-top. However, The Night Manager slays me in the best way. The cast is superlative - Hugh Laurie, Olivia Colman, Tom Hiddleston, Elizabeth Debicki, and the marvelous Tom Hollander (who delivers some of the best lines.) I mean, come on! They are all marvelous. The story is somewhat outlandish, of course, but it barely leaves the rhelm of credulity, at least not insultingly so. Even so, I've watched this several times and always catch something new. A big favorite in my family. I see they've made a new version in 2023 - all the best to them, but outdoing this from 2016 is an extremely tall order.
The Bear (2022)
Great on many levels
Great acting, great story, great cameos, great all around. As a former waitress and bartender - great, authentic writing, with nuanced characters (amid broad characters.) Leads all wonderful. Love the homage to Chicago.
Ayo Edebrini is a favorite - and plays Sydney to perfection. Can't wait for season 2!
Ghosts: Who Do You Think You Are? (2019)
I'm jealous you're just starting to watch this show
We didn't get "Horrible Histories" in the states, so I didn't know about this incredible team of actors until after I'd already fallen in love with this show. Now I get one reason it's so good. These actors have been working together for years and their amazing chemistry is palpable. Add that to great writing and premise and the fantastic casting of additional players, and I can't get enough if it. I'm happy for the actors / creators that there is an American version as well, and I hope it is successful, but I have little interest in seeing a copy of this terrific cast when the original is perfect.
People Like Us (1999)
Dead brilliant writing - hilarious!
I have only seen 3 episodes, and already I'm a fan. This is absolutely brilliant. It reminds me of Spinal Tap more than The Office because the narrator/filmmaker is a character as well, and adds a lot of the awkwardness and absurdity. I'm going to wait to watch the rest with my husband who is working in the other room asking what I'm laughing about. Fan.
Ghosts: Part of the Family (2021)
Families
My favorite eoisode of Ghosts. Charming, beautiful, and whimsical. I adore this cast - I especially love Charlottte Richie, who plays Alison, with such sincerity. "Yes, and" more please.
