Circle (2015)
A moral quandary about society and where you fit in.
Every other review tells the story of the circle, 30ish people abducted, forced to play a game, for survival. Almost every one must quickly come to terms with their own mortality, and their own prejudices, while chosing to sacrifice or bargain for survival. The most interesting scene is the last one, where the survivors stand all huddled together, staring at the ships. After witnessing a single group eliminate all the players, by grouping them, such as: the elderly, non-Americans, blacks (rewatch if you didn't notice this one), single people, and some others make themselves targets by their own blatant bigotry. Some volunteer for sacrifice and some refuse to be a part of it all, but overall, it was a solid reflection of today's society. After watching the results of one group were the survivor uses dishonesty and gruesome leaps over mortality, eventually finds himself standing next to other survivors, young, old, pregnant women, various races, meaning that each group chose differently, when faced with elimination.
This movie was great, good acting, one room shot, complex feelings over a simplistic concept.
I've watched it a few times now, and I highly recommend it.
Deadware (2021)
It's like having a good concept, but nothing worked.
The shots were good, even though I was sure that I would dislike the shared screen computer setting, it still manages to feel real enough to keep the viewers eyes on the screen. The acting was pretty good for a low budget movie, and there were so many opportunities for cheap jump scares or evil creations to antagonize the two characters. The biggest issue is the two subjects of the movie, seem to being punished by a spirit of their old "friend", but honestly, it's way too much of a leap to believe that the grievances were harsh enough to be haunted. It just doesn't make sense, and the ending is horribly predictable with no substance. This could be remade with a much more complex script and terror, and be a great movie.
