The Rookie (2018)
The Rookie: A Show with Ups and Downs
I generally find "The Rookie" enjoyable. Each episode offers well-written interwoven plots that keep me engaged. While using body cameras and vehicle cameras can result in lower video quality, it provides a unique perspective on the action, adding a touch of realism.
However, the show has its weaknesses. Jenna Dewan needs to go. I often fast-forward through any scene that she is in.
The music is terrible.
While Nolan started strong, he seems to have lost some of his appeal, becoming one of the less compelling characters. His actions and facial expressions have become predictable and disappointing.
Thankfully, the show boasts several strong personalities who pick up the slack. Lucy and Diaz are standouts, consistently delivering captivating performances. Grey and Bradford are also compelling characters, trailing closely behind in terms of their presence and development. And for those who appreciate eye candy, Dylan Conrique plays a character with undeniable charm.
Overall, "The Rookie" is a mixed bag. While the concept and some characters remain engaging, certain aspects, like the casting error and lacklustre main character, might leave some viewers wanting more. Still, the series offers solid entertainment for those seeking a cop drama with action, humour, and character-driven stories.
Last note: I would have stopped watching long ago if it weren't for Melissa O'Neil (Lucy).
The Blacklist (2013)
If it weren't for James Spader ...
The Blacklist started out well. I could overlook Megan Boone's awkward, self-conscious acting because the focus was on the dazzling James Spader. Harry Lennix, Ryan Eggold and Amir Arison gave stellar performances, but Megan Boone was a poor choice.
Spader carried the series for many episodes, but by season 7 the writers' attempts to overcome the flimsy plot started to fail. By season 8 they were treading water to keep Reddington's secret identity interesting. There are only so many hours that an audience can watch a character avoid the same question.
If the producers are serious about carrying on I suggest that they come clean about Reddington's identity. It is no longer entertaining. Get some new writers and a strong female lead character.
Virgin River (2019)
Over the top drama and trauma
Some parts are enjoyable, but it seems like the writers try to add as much drama and trauma as possible. That is exhausting and not necessary.
Strong characters and actors.
The music is bad and gives the whole series a dated, jaded feel.
Mel's wardrobe needs an update.
