Mean Girls (2024)
Renee Rapp's in a neck brace - because she carries the weight of the entire film
Wow. I wasn't expecting much, but this was so horrible and so unnecessary. The girl who plays Cady should've never been cast, she sings flatter than the mom in Stepbrothers during her Range Rover solo of "Sweet Child O'Mine." And it's literally the same script, but shorter, with interjected and forgettable songs. Even Tina Fey seems checked out as Norbury and it's her damn movie. The guy who plays Damian is a convincing copy, but derivative nonetheless. The only saving grace (somewhat) is Renee Rapp's belting pipes and her sharper, more shrew approach to Regina George: she's absolutely fabulous and sets a high water mark. The same can be said for whoever plays her mom: it's almost inconceivable to play a character Amy P slayed and make it your own, but she does seamlessly. Unfortunately, neither are in the movie long enough to make up for the rest of the flat, uninspired performances (Janice, Karen, and Gretchen are all so flat, over-the-top, and simultaneously unfunny). The one new laugh comes from Kevin G. Delivering the only well-timed (and new) line of dialogue at the end. Yikes. Save yourself the money and time. Two hours has gone by faster for me getting my teeth drilled. This thing was so poorly-written and acted and so superfluous, I questioned whether or not it was commissioned by the Eric Cartman version of Kathleen Kennedy.
Yellowjackets: Friends, Romans, Countrymen (2023)
What happened to this show?
Holy hell, this felt like a joke episode. It came off way more as hokey, silly, "supes edgy" Stranger Things-ish energy than anything in Season 1 or even episode 2 of the new season. The cinematography was so off that it was jarring to the point that I was wondering if this was the same show. Season 1's editing and cinematography was so up close that it felt claustrophobic and stuffy - it was absolute cinema gold. But this episode's angles were flat and uninteresting, creates zero urgency. The writing? Yikes-the pacing was all over the pace, they tried to cram way too much in and it felt like they tried to story-build new "characters" that were so minor in Season 1. And the Uber-cringey poop-singing clip-what show is this? Whoever edited and filmed this needs to go. I hope this show gets back on track. Season 1 was so well written and the pacing was absolutely perfect.
