HOLY HECK! Nerdy Prudes Must Slay!
15 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
/SPOILERS INCOMING FOR NPMD/ So, StarKid released their new musical Nerdy Prudes Must Die on Friday/Saturday (Im Australian for reference). AND IT WAS ICON STATUS. All the songs are eerily catchy and beautifully composed, with a Heathers meets Nightmare on Elm St feel with that indie feel SK is known for. Standouts in the cast were Jon Matteson as Richie/Wiggly (I loved the weeb choice in the script making Richie a unique character when in the trio of nerds) His death scene during the titular song Nerdy Prudes Must Die was done so well, using Max Jagerman's presence and ferocity to command the screen. Will Branner is the absolute MVP of this cast, playing the bully Max Jagerman perfectly. Branner plays to his strengths (fun fact he's the cover for Biff in the OBC of BTTF!!) he commands the stage and is captivating in his performance. Another standout is Angela Giarratana as Grace Chasitity, she was incredibly funny and strong in the acting, dancing and singing components while also hitting the comedic timing perfectly, she was a commanding ingenue/supporting lead character. When I first saw Lauren Lopez's primary track in this show (Beth), I thought "They cast her as a dude AGAIN?!" but it was beautiful subversion! I was incredibly impressed by the talents of the cast and the band. Special shout out to the costume designer, June Saito, the vibrancy and uniqueness of each design was out of this world. 10/10 Would recommend!

Not a review just some fun facts/tidbits

General - Robert Manion was slated for NMTS2 but was removed under misconduct allegations.

General - Nick Lang was the lips in the intro for NMT1 and NMT2.

General - It was thought that Nick Lang replaced Manion in the S2 intro sequence due to the latter's removal, however, Lang was present in the "Daddy's Gonna Get You!" group shot in the NMT1 intro sequence (top, 2nd from left)

General - Made in response to COVID19 pandemic, purportedly replaced the NPMD (Nerdy Prudes Must Die) run.

Jesus....Golden Globe Nom NOW!!
16 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
O. M. F. G!!! Just saw SISSY at the Darwin Film Fest and jesus! Hannah Barlow is an amazing filmmaker and really captures each character perfectly. The angles and shots are just perfect. A true masterclass of how filmmakers should shoot horror films. Aisha Dee as Cecillia is absolutely outstanding - all the actors just grip you with their performances and it was truly breathtaking. Warning! It gets gruesome and gory. A true-blue slasher film that needs to be on screens globally, not to mention the commentary on the power of influencers on youth culture, what an powerhouse of a film. Its really quite special.

/SPOILER WARNING IN EFFECT NOW/ In Act I we see Cecilia and she is filming a wellness tutorial and she bumps into her childhood friend Emma at the pharmacy, she is then invited to the latter's bachelorette party, as we lead into Act II the audience is frequently shown an old video of Alex and Cecilia (being called Sissy) as she is teased the audience is positioned to feel sympathetic towards her. The action then starts with Alex and Cecilia fight in a waterhole for Cecilia's phone after she was deemed 'cancelled' by the group, and Alex subsequently wanted to expose Cecilia to her fans, however, before the video is posted she hits her with a rock. That is by far one of the TAMEST deaths in this chilling film. Next on the hitlist is Jamie, a gay male with a disability, and his death is also pretty tame in comparison to Death 3-5. While I won't spoil the death order I must warn viewers that the Death 4 is gruesome and very graphic so be prepared.

TDRI - Has some flaws, but is very enjoyable
9 August 2022
TDROTI or Revenge of the Island was a average season, while better than later seasons (All-Stars, Pahkitew Island, DramaRama), it does not fare well in comparison to the juggernauts of previous editions (notably Series 1 and 3). Mike in particular was a real miss. It is fantastic to make a character based on someone who is neuro divergent, however the characterisation of Mike was mishandled, firstly his label incorrectly labels the disorder as MPD rather than the new term DID, which changed in 1999. Secondly, the exaggeration of the switches were downright distasteful.
