Our Flag Means Death: Mermen (2023)
Beautifully Tragic
As season 2 came to a close, I think David Jenkins really pulled out all the stops for this one. The cinematography alone is award worthy, the stunt choreography and battle scenes had me speechless (and/or screaming). The costume design was a huge part of this episode and I can't express how amazingly the costume department dressed these characters. This show has always been romantic and tragic, like Romeo and Juliet, and this episode is no different. It's heartbreaking and breathtaking and it wraps up the season while wonderfully setting it up for the next season. I can't wait to see what we get in season 3. I hope there's more like this.
Our Flag Means Death: Man on Fire (2023)
Rhys Darby Nails It
Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet absolutely nails his role in this episode. Comparing this episode to the first one, seeing the change in Stede is only something Rhys could do. He puts all of this energy into convincing us of the character he's playing, and while having changed a lot, he still keeps those little things that make Stede himself, and stays true to the character. As a Stede lover, this episode was so fun to watch as we see this arc of Stede learning new things about himself and about his capabilities. We get to see his confidence grow, and it makes you feel proud of Stede for everything he's accomplished and how happy it makes him.
Our Flag Means Death: Calypso's Birthday (2023)
Beautiful
Where to even begin; the set design and costume design in this episode are a force to be reckoned with. The visuals are stunning and so intricate down to every last detail. The makeup crew also deserves a shoutout to the phenomenal job they did with all of the characters at the party, and truly transformed what we thought we knew about some of the characters. It was full of romance and thrills (and comedy of course) and I couldn't have asked for a better episode. I won't spoil anything but I have to say that this episode really hits the peak of the season, culminating so much of what everything has been leading up to. Amazing work all around.
Our Flag Means Death: The Curse of the Seafaring Life (2023)
This Episode is Everything
This episode is everything to me. From the cat bell to the potato sack outfit, to seeing Izzy grow as a character, to the "you wear fine things well" reference, nothing could top this episode. It's a mixture of sweetness and it melts our hearts just like the crew's. Ed shows such great personal growth and learns a lot about himself which shows really how hard he's trying to be better not only for himself, but for Stede as well. He recalls their conversation from the previous episode and asks to take things slow as to not be so whim-prone and I think it's such a fantastic step to take in their relationship, setting boundaries and talking it through (as a crew of two).
Our Flag Means Death: Fun and Games (2023)
Chaotic
The chaos of Mary and Anne was fantastic. I love the way their relationship was represented and the way they drew parallels to Ed/Blackbeard and Stede. The emotional scene on the couch between Stede and Ed/Blackbeard was pivotal for this season, finally airing out everything the audience already knew. The set design was gorgeous, and the callback of the yellow blanket to Stede's golden robe in season 1 makes the scene all the more romantic. Stede knows Ed/Blackbeard is vulnerable, and he takes his time, listening to him and not overwhelming by saying things he's not yet ready to hear. Their commitment to each other and their shared fear of being like Anne and Mary gives us the feel again that we had before their breakup.
Our Flag Means Death: The Innkeeper (2023)
Gravy Basket
For a romantic comedy, this episode gets really dark. It touches on a lot of very sensitive topics, and shows some of the darker sides to mental health issues that most media don't want to get into. I think it adds more realness and depth to the plot by diving (quite literally) into the main character's psyche and having him confront himself. The visual effects in this episode were also phenomenal. The set being on actual beaches and land in Aotearoa New Zealand was a beautiful addition from last season. Rhys Darby absolutely nailed his performance as Stede Bonnet in this episode, pouring out all of his love and emotion to Blackbeard and never giving up even when they've told him there's no hope.
Our Flag Means Death: Red Flags (2023)
Red Flag Queen
I loved this episode and meeting Zheng Yi Sao, the Pirate Queen. Ruibo did a fantastic job balancing the side of aggressive bloodthirsty pirate, and vulnerable romantic. Her and Auntie's relationship is a beautiful one of women in power and not letting men knock them down. She blurs the line of how femininity traditionally is represented, and uses that femininity for her own gain. It's amazing to see women of color in leadership roles in media, because everyone deserves to see themselves on screen. In a mainly male dominated first season, I was very pleased to see the amount of women lead role this season.
Our Flag Means Death: Impossible Birds (2023)
Thrilled
I was so excited for season 2 and this episode proved once again why I love this show so much. Our Flag Means Death season 2 episode 1 was just as I'd hoped, witty, humorous, dark, and exciting. Seeing the dynamic with Blackbeard and his new crew was devastating, and I think it really expressed to us how his character was feeling. It was very emotional and chaotic and I think it really sets you into the mind of the characters at that time. The show is first and foremost a comedy, so even in the darkest parts I was still able to laugh. The set was amazing and it was so great to see Jackie'z again.
Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)
Exceeded Expectations
I've been a big fan of the Five Nights at Freddy's game series for so many years now and I was thrilled to hear it was turning into a movie. In game to film adaptations I usually tend to be sceptical about how good it will turn out. I was also unsure about how Josh would do in the lead role, but I was wonderfully surprised- he did a stellar performance. The animatronics were what I was most excited about and I'm blown away by how great they looked on screen. It was so hard to remind myself that the animatronics were real puppets because they looked so good. There's not a lot of practical effects in movies anymore, most things like that are just CGI now. The movie blew my expectations out of the water. I've watched it multiple times now and love it more each time.
Knock at the Cabin (2023)
Better than I Hoped
This was really good. I love M Night Shyamalan movies, adored them growing up, and I'm always excited to see what twists and turns he plans. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. The acting was phenomenal as was the cinematography, a stunning set. Jonathan Groff nailed his role and David Bautista was the perfect choice for his role. I also loved that the couple was gay because that normalizes gay main characters in movies where being gay has nothing to do with the plot. The chemistry between the men was great and the daughter is going to become a great actress someday, already so expressive and captivating the audience, truly leading a lot of the film.
