Oblivious (2001)
Fresh humor, well hosted entertainment
I had not seen this show until recent (2004) reruns. It has quickly become a "must watch" for me. The humor is fresh, and much of it spontaneous. It may follow somewhat in the format of other shows (e.g. Candid Camera), but with the game show twist manages to give an appearance of originality.
Most of the credit must go to Regan Burns, who is very gifted. I hope we will see much more of him in other projects in the future. He has a natural talent for humor, and carries the physical aspects wonderfully e.g. the pommel horse demo. He manages to develop a good relationship with his victims, and thus the pranks don't come off seeming mean spirited. Some of the best moments in the show are the reactions of the people on the street to receiving unexpected $20 bills.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Great entertainment
This was the most fun movie of 2003. The story was original and above average, a pleasant surprise for a story based loosely on a theme park entertainment. The ghost ship and crew was a nice touch, but the show remained essentially an old fashioned adventure story, enhanced by a really good production to make everything seem believable. It had a good pace and special effects, but the strongest thing in its favor was the really good acting. Johnny Depp put in a great performance to make his character amusingly eccentric and likable, but there were other fine cast members, such as Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom, not to mention some really knavish pirates.
Yabu no naka no kuroneko (1968)
A real classic
I saw this movie when it was newly released. In spite of the subtitles it was really enjoyable. The effects were great considering how long ago it was made. Counts as a real classic alongside movies such as Psycho.
