What Dreams May Come (1998)
Total dreck!
Somehow and mercifully I had missed the fact that this movie existed until today. But I watched it because it was recommended on a online grief support group. When I saw that it had Robin Williams in it, I had high hopes because I consider him to be talented and have liked most of the movies I've seen him in.
Then I read the plot summary on IMDb and Wikipedia and the movie sounded absolutely awful. But, I thought I'd keep an open mind and give it a try.
Before long, I had the uncomfortable feeling that this would be like all those sappy Lifetime Network made-for-TV movies. The plot was simplistic and the character development was nil. Still, I held out hope.
If "Heaven" is anything like the juvenile portrayal depicted in this movie, I think I'll opt for the other place. People floating around doing nothing identifiable? Please! Then there's the whole "suicide victims go to hell" stereotype that is ignorant and cruel.
Seriously - this movie was a total waste of time. My respect for Robin Williams has gone down several points for his agreeing to appear in this movie.
If I could rate this movie a negative number, I would.
King of California (2007)
Don't waste your time
Bad pretext for a plot. This movie is yet another which badly portrays mental illness, both in the plot and in the acting. It makes light of those who suffer from bipolar disorder, as thought it were merely a personality quirk or eccentricity, rather than a serious brain disorder that can literally kill people or ruin their lives and wreak havoc on their families.
This movie doesn't have a single redeeming quality that I can think of. Other than if you're doing a study of how Hollywood perpetuates outdated myths about mental illness and continues to take advantage and ridicule the mentally ill - the last segment of population which apparently it is OK to mock.
While the Children Sleep (2006)
Typical psychotic baby sitter story line
I know that movies aren't necessarily supposed to mirror reality, but this one got on my nerves. It perpetuates ignorant stereotypes about "psychological trauma" and mental illness. The "psycho mom" thing has been done too many times before (and usually done better) and much of the rest of the plot is far-fetched as well. The acting was not horrible but nothing to rave about.
One highlight: I am a long-time fan of General Hospital and it was a trip to see one of the roles played by former GH regular, Jon Lindstrom.
Anyway, if you can overlook the bogus psychoanalytical part of it, in the same way a person must suspend reality / judgment when watching a lot of movies, then this movie might be tolerable. If you have nothing better to do and fairly low standards.
I'm sorry I spent my time watching it.
