The Knockout (2023– )

Only the First Chapter is Good
6 March 2023
Good effort from actors and actress, and the original story is facinating enough.

There are 3 chapters in total. The first chapter is definitely the good one. It has emotions, drama, conflict and character development. It's attractive and it gives a good start to the whole story setup.

When it comes to the 2nd chapter, the conflict and character development are still there, but the story pace becomes very unstable. There are certain parts of stories very slow and the ending of chapter no.2 is wrapped up in a storm manner, which makes me feel very disappointed.

The 3rd chapter is totally crap.

In addition, the main cop character has no long term character development. I know there are changes to his life, but I don't feel the description of that makes me feel his changes. So this character is very thin to me, more like a guy who stitches up the story.

Once again, I like how the actors and actresses interpret and perform the whole thing, but the final storyline and directing presented in these 39 eps certainly let down my expectations and their overall effort.

Top Gun (1986)

Maybe great in the 80s
14 July 2022
I watched this movie for the first time in 2022. Before writing this review, I haven't watched the sequel yet.

I won't comment on the aeroplane fight scenes because I know the film shooting and production then and now are at different levels thanks to the advancement of technologies.

The biggest bummer in this movie is the story and dialogues. The whole story is not engaging enough, and the romance story clips are just awkward.

This is just my feeling after watching it because I understand the comments above may be unfair since this movie's target audience may not be the people in 2022.

I guess a fairer comment may be that regardless of this movie being successful in the 80s or not, Top Gun 1986 is not much for the 2022 audience if you haven't already loved it.

Just Excellent
2 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First and foremost, this movie is definitely a masterpiece in my opinion. Disclaimer, I'm not saying it is the only masterpiece. In the history of movies and TV shows, there are so many shining stars. 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' is destined to be one of the stars.

Music

The music goes hand-in-hand with the story and emotion development. Take the first 12-minute intro clip as an example, it goes from stressful, disordered, conflicting and confusing music to spooky and mysterious music, and then to calm but sad music. In the meantime, in every little highlight / climax in the plot and emotions, background music was left blank to allow the audience to focus on the key conversation and get ready for the next chapter of story or a different feeling / atmosphere / emotion with a different feel of background music.

All of these brilliant uses of background music in the first 12-minute intro clip of the movie, together with all other things make me feel an immersed emotional experience in the character and life of Evelyn as an audience.

Dual Storylines

I see 2 storylines in this movie. One is the entertaining sci-fi storyline and another one is the touching family interrelationship repair and self-salvation story. It feels like a top quality double-side sweater. You can wear it with either side and all the threads are intertwined and woven together. Most lines can be read with two different meanings that serve well for both storylines.

So Many Elements with Different Tastes

Commercially, I believe it will be a successful movie as well, because I can see so many elements in this movie, which will satisfy a wide range of audiences.

It has so many fun setups and humour, such as the jumping pads that are only triggered by the weird stuff.

The fighting scenes are comedy action style, which remind me of a lot of the Jackie Chan classics. Plus the good amount of martial art performance experience of actors and actresses here make the actions more legit, like Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Andy Le and Brian Le. Plus plus in some side shots of the actor Ke Huy Quan (Waymond, the husband), he really looks like Jacky Chen somehow. As an audience, I really enjoyed every fight scene in this movie, which certainly brings up the energy level of the movie.

This movie touches so many topics, such as family member relationship management, especially from generation to generation, self value, communications and interactions with other human beings, and depression, which are all embedded and integrated well in the plot and get me as an audience thinking more after watching. Especially the two highlights like Waymond saving Evelyn and Evelyn then saving her daughter are really engaging, moving and encouraging to think more and beyond the story itself.

With so many elements, the crew doesn't turn the movie into chaos or a stitching product, but a greatly balanced movie.

Using Peter Marshall's definition of a good movie, I think this is an excellent movie because it tells a compelling story with believable characters who make me feel Everything Everywhere All at Once.

So at the end, a big thank you and many congratulations to the Directors and Writers Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, all the talents, performers and every production team member who made such a brilliant movie for everyone!

Definitely some funny clips, good for friday night with the mood to be entertained
27 June 2022
It is a average comedy movie with some funny clips, and I did enjoy those with big and good laughings.

Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson are definitely another selling point of the whole movie, which is exactly the reason why this movie caught my attention in the first place and made me want to watch it on a Friday night.

However, the whole storyline or plot is not working too well, especially with the ending. The ending feels like it was forced out without too much thinkings in it. Maybe it is planned to be an average commercial production, and well the cost is it is destined to receive no greater than 6/10 review.

But like I said in the title, it still serves as a Friday night entertainment. Because it is a Friday night, people are always more generous and easy to be entertained.

Stories good, but screenplay may need improvement
24 June 2022
All the stories (regardless based on real events or not) are definitely shocking, plus shooting emotional scenes is always an advantage of Korean TV shows and films.

These should've already paved a smooth walkpath to an eye-catching show. However, for a couple of times I really felt like not wishing to proceed to the next episode. The production is overall still very good, but I think the way this story being told is not showing focus and the pace feels a bit off.

Overall, it's a good production, I know what it tries to say and what it wants the audience to feel, but not engaging enough.

PS: really like the different role that actor Jin Seon-kyu plays in this show than his fried chicken cop in Extreme Job.

Good production but expected storyline.
20 June 2022
Overall, it is a good production with the lovable casting. However, the story is in the exact way it was developed as in the previous couple of movies in the series. I felt very excited about every reverse in the stories of the previous movie series, but after watching the same reverse over and over again makes me feel a bit frustrating, because the excitement is gone. I guess it's still a movie worth more than 7/10 stars for the first-time audience, because after all it is holding its production quality as previous movie series.

If there are more in this series to come in the future, I really hope to see some different twists in the story and makes the audience wow again.
