The Indian Runner (1991)
An Underrated Gem
It amazes me that this movie is not more highly acclaimed or widely recognized. A moving story about two brothers who are as different as night and day, this film is well-acted, well-written, and boasts some excellent songs from David Lindley as well. Viewers will be surprised by the emotional punch of this entertaining drama. An interesting aside is that this film is actually loosely based on a Bruce Springsteen song, 'The Highway Patrolman'.
Insignificance (1985)
A True Stinker!
This is truly one of the worst movies in film history, from the stagey setting to the cardboard characters to the ridiculously weak script and plotline. If you find the concept of a fake Marilyn Monroe having a miscarriage on a toilet seat enticing, however, I highly recommend running out to rent it. What the people behind this film had in mind is an enigma. It fails on every level and isn't the least bit entertaining in any way. The fairly credible actors who were involved in this--such as Gary Busey and Theresa Russell--should be ashamed of themselves. I actually feel deep sympathy for anyone who rents or buys Insignificance.
Yentl (1983)
a truly dismal movie
I worked in a movie theatre in 1983 where Yentl was the only film playing, and I was forced to see it dozens of times in the course of my job. The plot is ridiculous, the pathetic moral point of the film is nauseating, and the songs comprise possibly the worst soundtrack in movie history. Barbra Streisand is madly in love with herself--something that is evident in every frame of this movie--and unless you're equally wild about her I strongly suggest doing anything possible to avoid this painful suck-fest of a flick.
