World War II: From the Frontlines (2023)
Must watch, because it's uncomfortable
Six horrific years packed into six episodes of a documentary. Of course there are things missing and some debatable statements. Not all sequences are entirely in order.
However:
- More than 60 million are dead.
Those who have lived through this conflict will carry the scars forever.
It will fall to those who come after to learn its lessons. -
This closing statement today rings more important than ever.
In color, these disturbing images from the history books remind us of the cost of war. And that the blokes who break them lose usually suffer the least. Democracy requires requires constant effort. Be wary of those who tell you otherwise and those who blame -them- instead.
If this shortened version of WW2 helps younger generations to understand that this may never repeat, I'm all for it.
Great work to everyone involved, thank you so much.
The Covenant (2023)
Guy, is it you? Straight to Stream flick that only misses Steven Segal
I was really looking forward to this, as I've enjoyed Guy Richie's work so far. Boy, was I disappointed:
Setting: cliche
Action sequences: mediocre
Character arc: nonexistent
Emotional depth: thickness of a quarter
Plotline: as predictable as a microwave timer
The humor and banter of previous Richie movies has been replaced with... what excactly? Two tough guys just blankly staring at one another in... gratefulness?
I like all kinds of movies, super patriotic action flicks just as much as comedies, animated movies, sci-fi, dramas, documentaries, classics and underdogs.
What I don't like is movies that I regret watching halfway through - this being one of them.
Together Together (2021)
Solid craftsmanship falling short
So first, all the stuff that's great: production quality is top notch, dialogue is witty and subtle - a lot to love. I especially like that viewers that pay attention to tiny details (a barely legible email foreshadowing or a pair of certain shoes) are rewarded.
The arc of the story is setting up the grand finale to be a cookie cutter Happy End, which would've rounded this off easily.
Instead there's an unexpected twist, leaving a rather bleak prospect. Maybe an hommage to 'The Sopranos'? Script and Acting until here are what to expect from a comedy, well executed and light, then it takes another direction.
Florida Man (2023)
Hilarious.
If you enjoyed movies like The good guys, Kiss kiss Bang Bang or Shoot em up! And kept up with the times this series is for you!
High production value, heisting, plot twists, crude humor, bodies, goofy violence, accidents, coincidences and lots of tiny details kept me entertained.
I noticed: there are strong female characters that blend into the script naturally. Truly as equals in depth and complexity to any male character. That's how equality works, great writing. I also enjoyed the dialogue and punchlines a lot more than I expected: I laughed out loud on several occasions.
Recommended watch to anyone +16.
Manifest (2018)
Boring, ultimately and unfortunately
I really liked the basic concept of semi time traveling, as a thought experiment for myself, too. The first three episodes were a bliss to watch, I really enjoyed it. Now (S1E9) it turned into a mix of, x-factor, fringe and some sort of drama soap I wouldn't watch - sprinkled with a tv-level action shootout scene where nobody needs to reload their gun. I'm not entirely sure when I fell asleep that the plot doesn't make sense anymore. To me, it's in the plot and writing, rest of production is fine.
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Underwhelming, unfortunately
It's a generic storyline in Star Wars decor. I'm a true blood Star Wars fan ever since I've first watched episode 4 at age 8 on vhs, so I'm somewhat biased admittedly.
If anyone from the production reads this: you've done a marvelous job. Sets, lighting, sound, score, props, camera, stunts, postproduction are top notch and on par with silver screen most of the time. CGI adds phenomenal depth.
But. It's the writing that gets me. Many scenes feel like classic setups seen in action movies many times before and not tailored to the Star Wars universe. At times dialogue lacks tension, character development is foreseeable and/or flat. In essence the storyline is just not exciting enough.
