Le ballon rouge (1956)
Paradise regained...! 🎈
The living things is not the only thing on the list of innocent children's affections; Includes some non-living things. Balloon is one of the favorite toys for children. This short film is a fantasy of what it would be like if such a balloon could start listening to children's words.
Six-year-old Pascal, on his way to school, sees an inflated red balloon flying high on a street pole. He climbs the pole and releases the balloon and takes it with him. When he tries to board the bus with the balloon, the conductor refuses, saying 'there is no room for balloon in the bus'. So Pascal runs to school with a book bag in one hand and a red balloon in the other. As he is denied permission to carry a balloon inside the school, he hands the balloon to a school staff member and goes to class, only to receive it on his way home. Thus the red balloon becomes a part of his daily life. From the beginning, we are happy to see this red balloon in the short film, which appears as a ash earth.
He seeks shelter from a person carrying an umbrella on a rainy road and carries the balloon to safety without getting wet in the rain. After coming home, he flies the balloon freely on the first floor balcony and goes to sleep. As if the balloon had come to life, it was there without leaving him. It means that if we really love something, even if we have to leave it, it will not leave us.
The red balloon follows Pascal as he leaves for school the next morning. This balloon behaves like a lady lover. If you get close, it will go away. If moves away, it will come closer (Just kidding) , later on both of them played hide and seek game.
The Balloon are not allowed on the bus. So Pascal is the only one to get on the bus, and the balloon follows the bus at full speed. Except for Pascal, the scene is surprising to the other persons. As for children, they won't even be surprised if the balloon starts talking to them. Because any toy comes to life when they are handled. Pascal's balloon has a big crush on him. If anyone else tries to catch the balloon, it will fly out of reach. If Pascal calls, it will fly and appear in front of him wherever it is. Meanwhile, while playing with balloon at school, Pascal is locked in a separate room by his teacher. In this case, the scenes where the balloon follows him in a threatening tone make us laugh. The teacher frees Pascal.
Pascal's red balloon begins to follow the girl's blue balloon as she walks down the road. The boy takes this. Immediately the blue balloon is escaped from the girl's hand and the red balloon is followed by the girl, and the scenes of the girl running to get her balloon not only remind us of the French flag (this is a French short film) and also delightful For us children.
At this point the other boys are jealous of Pascal's red balloon that comes alive. As a group, they chase after Pascal, who runs with the balloon in his hand. Pascal and his balloon trick the boys and run away. At one point a mischievous boy hits the balloon with a bow and the injured balloon loses air and falls to the ground unconscious. The boys jump with excitement. The balloon, which was struggling for life by holding some air, was trampled by a boy and completely destroyed. Seeing this, the boy cried. This scene has clearly expressed the grief we feel when we lose something we love.
The boy sits next to the broken balloon with great sadness. Hundreds of colorful balloons from the roads, windows of houses, balloon shops, etc, looks like crowd of rainbows. From various parts of the city have invaded the sky to compensate for Pascal's tragedy. The boy grabs the ropes tied to the balloons. The short film ends with balloons carrying the boy aloft. For many who have seen this, we may sometimes feel that it would be better to have someone with us to relieve loneliness.
I don't know how they managed to capture the stunning balloon scenes. But some Filmmaking techniques such as minimum dialogues & close-up shots and lots of tracking, long, POV shots & Guerrilla filmmaking are enhance the quality of this short film.
My childhood was seen through this short film as I bought many kinds of balloons at the grocery store where I bought snacks, reached home without bursting the balloon in my hand during the festival, and fought with my younger brother for the balloon.
So all in all with this short film I found paradise regained...!
Chithha (2023)
stole my heart....!!
This is a film released in the context of sexual abuse against children. After his brother's sudden death, Siddharth brings up his brother's only daughter Sundari (Sahasra Sree) as his own daughter. Sundari's schoolmate Ponni (S. Aafiyah Tasneem). One day both the friends wish to see the deer in person and plan without telling anyone. After Sundari refuses to come at the last moment, Ponni, who goes alone, is abused by an unidentified person. Circumstances make Siddharth guilty. He is shunned by his family and friends. At one point when Siddharth is found to be innocent, Sundari goes missing. Has Siddharth found her? Who is the culprit is the rest of the story.
Siddharth has brought uncle in front of his eyes. Through acting, he imprints his pain on us. It will definitely be a landmark film in his career. Both the children in the film are acting naturally. Especially, Sahasra Sree notices as chithha, chithha showering affection. In particular, her portrayal of the victim is heart-wrenching. The travails she goes through at the hands of the kidnapper are chilling. Most of the characters in the film can be relatable to our lives. Even the minor characters of the film leave their emotions deep in our minds. Nimisha Sajayan, who is known for her natural acting in Malayalam, has made good use of the opportunity, though her chances are few. The pain of her telling Siddharth about the cruelty that happened to her is deeply conveyed to the fans. Anjali Nair has played the role of sister-in-law.
Siddharth is stigmatized for a crime he did not commit. His sister-in-law is suspicious of him. Sundari, the daughter who came around as chithha, chithha (chitthappa or uncle), walks away. These scenes make us a little uneasy. Editing and cinematography have helped the story of the film. However, the film's songs "Unaku Thaan" & "Kangal Edho" especially... "Unaku Thaan" will become everyone's favourite. The background music has also helped the film in a big way. Although the story is for children, the screenplay is not lax. The story unfolds naturally.
But this screenplay itself gets bogged down at some points. Because it's a children's movie and other types of fans might get a bit bored. If you expect the director to say something new, later on it becomes a typical movie of culprit, police chasing them, hero searching alone. In the second half, the director has messed up the story with two kidnappings, two criminals, confusion and Siddharth's murder attempt.
But this movie stole my heart.
Naane Varuvean (2022)
Selvaraghavan, Dhanush and Yuvan combination of Trio Magic
After a long gap, Selvaraghavan, Dhanush and Yuvan combination of Trio Magic.
'Naane varuven' is the story of a deer going into the forest to hunt a tiger to save its cub. Did the deer hunt the tiger, did the tiger hunt the deer, what happened to the cub? As frame by frame Selva's verse.
In the story, Dhanush has lived and shown two different body language and two different souls as the cruel Kathir and cool Prabhu. Dhanush as the innocent father Prabhu who chases away the spirit that entered his daughter and tries to save her! Psycho Dhanush (Kathir) Pure Magic, who murders relationships like father (Saravana Subbiah), wife (Elli), son, while longing for love and affection, beating and killing his beloved wife... is it acting!
Indhuja Ravichandran, who comes as the quiet Dhanush's wife, is not lacking in youth; There is no shortage of talent. Elli AvRam, who plays the villain Dhanush's wife, gives us the pain without a word. Hiya Davey, who plays Dhanush's daughter, is a perfect daddy's girl...
Yogi Babu and Prabhu are They try to do the work given to them properly.
Om Prakash's cinematography, Supernatural... background music & the songs, the Meastro's throne is now in Yuvan's possession!
But some questions like a dust flying in the air and falling into the eye.
Maaveeran (2023)
Maaveeran - A conceptual entertainer
A 'hero' (Maaveeran) is the one who throws away the opportunistic principle of "living in harmony with injustice" and fights for people's problems.
The government is shifting slum dwellers to flats on the banks of the koovam river. It was a block of flats full of shoddy buildings due to the corruption of Minister Jayakodi (Mysskin). Sathya (Sivakarthikeyan) is a comic artist with a timid temperament who says, 'No matter what the problem is, you should not knock it, you should adjust it'. An accident turns him into a comic book character he drew and a voice prompts him to fight against injustice. After that, the film interestingly tells how Satya became a hero.
Sivakarthikeyan has taken a new avatar by completely breaking the body language of his earlier films. He shines as an excellent actor in the scene where he gets scolded by his mother for his cowardice. He has won the challenging role of listening to the 'voice' and following it even though he doesn't want to, at one point he realizes the need for struggle and defies the voice and bravely stands against it.
Along with Sivakarthikeyan's performance, Vijay Sethupathi's voice-over is the greatest strength of Maaveeran. Saritha shows in every frame that she is a seasoned veteran actress. Even more so, she is in a place where he is disturbed to know that his son tried to commit suicide after listening to his words! Although she disappeared in the second half, Aditi Shankar played her role perfectly in the first half.
It is comforting that the film has focused on the issue at hand rather than diverting to love and marriage. The theater vibrates with Yogi babu's every scene. Mysskin could have been used more. But the place where he says, "You have been hearing voices for two weeks, I am 22 years old" is amazing. Sunil's portrayal is different but it is disappointing that he is not used more. 'Aruvi' Madan is intimidating in his character.
Music composer Bharath Sankar is amazing in the background score and the songs 'scene Ah scene Ah' and 'Vannarapettayila'. Vidhu Ayyanna's cinematography realistically captures the interior of the apartment from the riverside of Koovam. Kumar Gangappan and Arun Venjaramoodu's art direction, the iconic comic paintings and Phoenix Prabhu's unique stunts have added strength to the film.
Taking the concepts of comics and commercial hero, the director has made a lively film by adding contemporary political issues such as the eviction of slum dwellers and the construction of substandard government flats due to corruption.
But after the 'completion' stage, the long film gets a little boring. The film does not answer the questions like why the people stand aside and watch while the 'hero' fights against corruption as a single man, what the opposition parties and the media are doing in all these problems, why CM Balaji Sakthivel is inactive in some scenes.
However, Maaveeran promises to be a conceptual entertainer.
Bigil (2019)
'bigil' - my POV:
Rowdy Rayappan, who strives for the progress of the people of his area, takes up the game of football to change their lives. His son Michael grows up to be a football star. He wants to make that change through his son. But. Michael lifts the knife in the hand that should lift the cup, only to be killed by his father's career, the arrogance of the ruling class, and he gets an opportunity to fulfill his father's wish. The compulsion to become the coach of the best women's soccer team. He picks up the ball again. Enemies remain the same. The story is how he succeeds on and off the field.
Director Atlee talks about the importance of sport in a thrilling action arena and the politics behind it. It stands out from his previous films with songs, visuals and dialogues that give confidence to women, Bigil.
Vijay has two roles as father and son. The maturity and calmness within the father's character is surprising. Rayappan is on a different level, like the mannerism of speaking in a stilted manner, 'come... come and hug...' to his son. In the son character, Vijay is a typical jerk. Then when he too becomes a rowdy, the paternalism comes and sticks. Beyond fighting and dancing, Vijay's flamboyant styles on the football field will be talked about. Nayanthara is wasted.
Although he was taken to Delhi as a physiotherapist, he was not given much work there either. Jackie Shroff is no stranger to being good and being villainous. In this too he has done it perfectly.
Indhuja, Amrita, Reba Monica John, Varsha Bollamma, who play the roles of football players, have all acted well. Kathir fills his mind. Both Vivekh and Yogi Babu try to make their part laugh.
A. R. Rahman's background music adds vibrancy to the scenes. Although some scenes are lost in the football match, A. R. Rahman's music saves it. The song 'Singa Penne'. From now on it will be played in programs conducted by women. G. K. Vishnu's cinematography has made the film look grand.
The film is about women who have lost their dreams and become family women and some women who are paralyzed in the room due to acid attacks. While making a good point, the Dons are portrayed as heroes and their killings are justified. It is also not acceptable that the film presents the idea that the bottom line will solve all problems. If the story had been set up as the change that the father could not bring about with his fists, his son would bring about through knowledge and non-violence, everyone would have whistled for the film.
Dumbo (2019)
Dumbo(Disney's animation fantasy):
Some are many Hollywood films. Come with over-exciting advertisements and fail to live up to expectations. Some films come without any expectations and surprise. The 2nd type is Dumbo.
A famous circus company is Jumbo Circus. The circus is running at a loss as the public has lost interest in it. Circus artists are struggling because they don't know any other profession. Circus boss Danny DeVito wants to do something new and turn people towards circus. This time he buys an elephant at a low price. Soon after arriving at the circus, the elephant gives birth to a calf. It is born with larger than normal ears if the cub can be used as a circus show to impress people.
In the circus company live the horsewoman's son and daughter. A horsewoman dies of the plague, and her soldier husband returns from the army amputated. All three are very fond of the newborn baby elephant. They discover that the baby elephant has the power to fly thanks to its large ears. By some exercises they make the elephant fly. Circus weeds again with new debut 'It's a flying elephant'. But, a gang wants to hijack this flying elephant. What happens next is the rest of the story.
Although the elephant is a powerful animal, mentally it is like a child. Keeping that in mind, this film has been made. In this, only the baby elephant has been created in animation and the other characters have been left to move naturally. The film speaks poignantly about the disappearing art of circus and the plight of circus performers. The grand circus scenes are intimidating. The film talks about the motherly love of elephants and humans, apart from humans who see animals as commercial goods. Directed by Oscar and Golden Globe nominee Tim Burton, who has created several animal-centric animated films. Michael Keaton stars as Danny DeVito, who plays an animal lover in Hollywood's action hero colin farrell, in films about animals. If you go with kids, you can leave enjoying a circus in 3D technology and the adventurous things done by a baby elephant.
