The Golden Scallop (2013)
Funny and fun movie
It's no surprise this film won the Austin Film Festival Audience Award. It's hilarious and just realistic enough to make anyone who has worked in the restaurant business nod knowingly (or cringe, if an owner.) The story moves along quickly as we follow the trials and triumphs of of some dedicated, but occasionally clueless competitors. James Cosmos is great as the old New Englander judge and the rest of the cast shines. The writing is crisp and strikes a perfect balance of sincerity and silliness. The local color shown through the on-location filming on Cape Cod gives the film an authentic New England feeling and adds to the realism of the competition. These guys know their way around a fryolator! The 43rd Golden Scallop does for the restaurant business what "Best in Show" did for the Show dog circuit. I loved it.
Come on Down (2010)
Cute story
This is a romantic little comedy with a realistic, local Cape Cod feel. The female lead is sweet and likable and her understated performance is perfect for this charming take on romance in a small town. The scenes in the bait shop are cute, with the usual cast of hometown nut-cases. The title reflects the game show ambitions of the lead character and her responses to the TV in her dark living room are playfully interjected into the stream of the film. The male lead is handsome and charming and the attraction between them is obvious. The dream sequence is a little odd but overall, the writing is sharp and I loved the ending!
