Ra.One (2011)
Thank You
3 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I do not have to watch 20 movies prior to this one, just to find similarities. If the storyline and the pace keep me in my seat, then I consider it to be a good movie. This movie is of such a huge magnitude never seen before in Bollywood. SRK introduced a new genre in Bollywood on a very high level with very high production values. And people should thank SRK for that. It's an event to be experienced and has the potential to be a cult-movie!

This great visual experience I consider as a powerful movie which simple story relies on a nice soundtrack, kick-ass action and good GFX effects. And these elements are served on a big scale. Some action scenes are accompanied by brilliant background music score, which is something I do not experience in American movies. The motor/car chase and the first clash of Ra.One and G.One are real adrenaline boosters due to the good music.

However, I'm afraid that the average western viewer will not embrace this movie due to some cheesy jokes, the South Indian specific references and an unnecessary song. For instance the Rajnikant appearance and the 'Criminal' song where SRK is acting gay alike, were not necessary. Despite the low-brow humor, overall this movie is worth watching.

People who are looking for a reality story should stay at home. Cinemas came in to escape reality.

Timeless Adventure
9 March 2011
I can only admit what previous reviewers have cited: this movie is also my all time favorite Indian film!

The cocktail of the mind-blowing chemistry between Zeenat and Amitabh, some beautiful songs, especially the fun, the rich background music score, the smart one-liners and a bunch of the 70's great stars, is pure magic and a mix for a high repetitive value.

Zeenat is painting the screen with her presence and performance. She enlightens the story and is really a jewel to watch at, while Amitabh is acting pretty natural. Zeenat's performance as the exotic Arabic belly danseuse keeps the highest x-factor of all time. And the action scene with Jaggu as a butcher trying to hit Amitabh is awesome. I've seen this movie as a 12 years old kid in the Christmas holiday of 1979 and I was impressed by the scene where Zeenat is singing the song 'Do lafzon ki'. Currently, still I am when viewing this again. Modern film has all the special effects to impress. Instead, this one has soul!

I've been extremely exposed to Western influences and have seen many Western & Asian movies from my childhood till today. However, the magic of this movie is never surpassed by any other. The story is simple, nice fast paced with lots of fun. That's why it doesn't feel like a 2.5 hours sit. Very exciting! Shakti Samanta and R.D Burman delivered a real present to the Indian Cinema.

Although this movie is just 30 years old, the current DVD release is a restored old Esquire video print with green shades overall, accompanied by very poor sound quality. And also the English subtitle is very poor. It would be great if DVD releasers do justice to this movie and release the restored original widescreen masterreel of it with re-engineered dolby digital soundtrack.

An other disaster from Bollywood.
5 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Bollywood's bad PR continues with the release of this movie.

Plus Great cinematography and good music score. Beautiful locations and grand sets.

Spoilers This movie is so lame! Terrible repeating of the same background music score. Bad acting by Salman and Katrina. Zalman Khan, you can't act! Katrina Kaif can only smile like a barby doll. Terrible overacting by Anil Kapoor, an autist who understands emotion. It seems like the director has thought that a consistent story doesn't count and just focus on picturizing and cast nice laughing people who overacts like idiots.

Please Bollywood stop producing this kind of horror. From now on I will only watch movie of Mira Nair, Vidhu Chopra and Farhan Akhtar's.

Singh Is King (2008)

Why this torture?
27 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This movie does not live up to the expectations it created in its trailer and promos. The gestapo like performance at the film-fare awards promised me a great adventure, but hell no: it's just a zero level cheesy love story with lame songs about a rebound guy. That's a guy who appears and introduce himself as a friend of a couple, but actually he's after the girl. During the movie I was begging for merci, because of the repeated sympathy of the other key players for Singh which came really as a torture. Almost everybody was busy trying to make Singh happy, at the cost of everything, even someone's fiancée.

Throughout the whole movie Singh is crying about Khaiff and her fiancé who aren't happy together and on the other side a gangster crew is crying and feels sorry for Singh who also isn't happy because he is single. Finally her fiancé delivers Khaiff into Akshay's arms and guess what: Singh is happy, he's the King. Movie title explained. Very creative man! Unbelievable that this movie turns Akshay into a superstar and triggers him to earn millions of dollars. This movie should definitely not be screened outside India, it's very bad PR for Bollywood.
