Bama Rush (2023)
A true documentary
I really liked this take, how Rachel (the director) went and lived along side several different women as they approached Bama Rush 2022
I found it to feel authentic, and I enjoyed it. I think one of my favorite interviews was Katie in Tri delt, she seemed to lift the veil of a gorgeous put together girl, who like anyone else - struggles to feel 100% secure in themselves. A reminder of what it means to be human, really needed in the age of social media
I actually liked the director drawing parallels between her own life narrative of also trying to fit in, but realizing she stands out and cannot be herself until she stops trying to fit in
For some weird reason this documentary seemed to get a lot of hate, but I liked it a lot. Very exploratory on the themes of belonging, race, maturity, sisterhood / friendship, even status- Greek Life is wide ranging from a lot of angles.
The pieces on history were interesting too, as a UGA Alumna (2018), Georgia has a very similar background. I liked the first hand interviews of what it was like to be in a Sorority at Alabama 30 years ago and comparing it to present day.
White House Plumbers (2023)
Acquired Humor
At first, this show seemed not funny.
BUT after a while the over the top writing and satire made sense and we can't stop watching! Wish it would be released all at once vs week to week.
You know how the story ends so working backwards is interesting. Witty writing to imagine what must have been going through their heads.
My favorite part was when Liddy and Hunt
propose 10+ different "covert" operations and none get approved but Watergate! Liddy is the most insane, he seems to be a Hitler fan which is really on the nose with the Fascism / Patriotism they have. Might be my favorite character just because of the sheer ridiculousness and scheming.
It's been well casted with Theroux/Harrelson as the main characters, but other supporting cast are just as entertaining.
If nothing else the 70s style is done well with how the home, and other sets are designed... along with clothes / makeup / hair.
Velma (2023)
Not as bad as everyone says
Honestly, it's quite bingeable in the "turn off my brain for a night" kind of way... I agree with a lot of reviews, I weirdly wish that all the characters resembled OG Scooby doo gang.... But in all honesty opening up it said it's an origin story which I thought was interesting and expected it to be different. I guess this is an origin story for Velma except maybe in like a parallel universe ? Idk... I'm interested to see season 2, but would be surprised if it continued to be renewed. If their target audience is for adults, think the writing should be a little better. I've usually loved all the voice actors in either their own standup or other shows... but it feels a bit one note in some areas and some characters are a bit under utilized. The trope for Fred seems tired, as does the moms who are cop partners. I did like the plot about Daphne. Wish it didn't come across as forced lines but was more organic.
The Duchess (2020)
At times witty
The first few episodes were very interesting, trying to figure everything out. But then it became very predictable.... I find the jokes funny, and liked seeing what I feel is an explanation (though hyperbolic) of what Katherine Ryan's life feels like. I wish there would be another season to focus on like the future rather than past / present. How Katherine Ryan or other writers / producers see her life going and then like it's a daydream (or whatever). Definitely like her comedy, and the sassiness of Olive. Not such a fan of the dad nor step mom....and of course we love Evan.
