A little off. Skip if not a completionist. A disappointing entry with a few bright spots.
29 March 2024
Binge watching a series sure make continuity errors/irregularities more noticeable! "Last Scene Alive" had so many that I literally paused on separate occasions thrice and triple checked that I was watching the series in correct order.

This entry in the Aurora Teagarden Mystery series was a little off in many ways. Here are three examples without spoilers (any details I use are mentioned within the first few minutes after the intro):

1) Aurora very casually moved out of the house she fought so hard to stay in. Where she lived had no bearing on this movie and mentioning this was confusing and pointless. Aurora's tone didn't match her previous feelings toward her living arrangements.

2) John was gone abruptly (along with Doig) and both Aurora and her Mom's feelings about this were way too casual. That's another gripe about this film: many scenes were either a little overacted, or a little underacted.

3) Either Lynn was pregnant again (the other baby was never mentioned) or she had a reverse immaculate conception and the baby shrunk and morphed back inside her. A subtle shoutout to vore enthusiasts perhaps?

The intro of the movie was good enough. The panning was excessive, but the intro captured my interest. Also, the last 25 minutes were much better, aside from one scene that was plain ridiculous while at the same time having a "Chekov's Gun" so pointless, it was shooting nerf balls.

The middle portion was quite boring and predictable and if this was my first entry into this series, I would have given up on the show and series entirely. The guilty party was spotted immediately. I'm pretty sure this was not intended, and those responsible for this film were being sloppy. The acting was a little too big, the character makeup a bit too shiny, the camera zoomed in a little too much...just a combination of "not quite right" of many involved ended up spoiling a good chunk of the mystery.

The writing felt rushed, it seemed like each scene was only a few takes and the producers said "good enough", and the capable editing team must have been paid for the assignment, not by the hour.

Still, there were enjoyable scenes such as in the police hallway with Arthur and Robin who both acted quite well throughout. Also, something I did not realize until coming to this IMDB page would cause me to stick around if this movie popped up on TV so I could rewatch a few scenes. Providing more info than that -might- be considered a spoiler. Maybe just one more phrase: clever meta usage! An extra star tacked on for that.

I certainly hope the rest of these Mysteries are more enjoyable and the script, character developments, and dynamic between characters are treated with better care.

Quite Fun!
14 January 2023
This is a story about a couple of TV Repairmen, somewhat reminiscent of Laurel and Hardy, who accidentally get mixed up with the local mob and wind up smack in the middle between the mob family and the coppers. It's never not a comedy though, but still takes the plot seriously enough. So, no one turns into a horse (a L&H reference). However, there were a couple times I thought they went a bit too silly.

I'm not Italian, have never been to Sicily, and do not speak the language. I understood the jokes just fine, so not sure what the other reviewers were talking about.

The subs seemed accurate as the words matched the character's tone and body language.

Overall, this was an enjoyable watch. Now that I know this is a comedy duo, I plan to watch more of their work. A well-deserved 7* is my rating.

Like watching a Robot play Dance Dance Revolution
4 December 2022
This movie is like an overly long episode of Penny Dreadful that focuses on just one sub-plot and one and a half interesting characters. If that sounds enjoyable to you, then by all means, watch this film.

The acting is great, the movie is well made, the plot is not great (a strong baseline but goes nowhere, not really), the dialogue is okay, and overall it is just feels blah. Some very cool scenes, but for the most part it was more like, "hey look at this actor give a mean monologue!" or "wow, look how well we shot this!" or "see how seamless this editing was!" or "see how ugly and grey the streets are but we used it to make it ATMOSPHERIC!" You get the idea.

They set the movie up for a sequel, but I'm not the least bit interested. However, the main actor and the actor that played his brother, I would be interested in seeing more of their work. Hopefully, in something inspired as opposed to trying to show off technical prowess.

Charismatic is not the same as Funny
4 December 2022
This seemed less like a comedy show and more like watching a personable ex-con pal around with inmates using lots of inside jokes. However, if you've seen enough semi-real prison shows and movies (or been in yourself), you will understand the jokes...it's just that they are the type of jokes you'd laugh at when having one and one conversations with the person, but not laugh at watching. Basically, prison version of a bunch of dad jokes.

Also, it strangely felt very pro-State. Additionally, there didn't seem to be any point except letting the world know he is an ex-con and now tells jokes for a living.

Nothing against the guy, I just didn't find any redeeming value, memorable jokes, or any reason to ever watch again.

Oh wait, I did chuckle at the very first joke ("Thanks for being here tonight, not that you had a choice." Not original, but fine.) and the last joke which wasn't really a joke but a real prisoner lady talking about loving some nasty slime food.

Warning: Spoilers
A group of dudes act like rude americans and bang brothel ladies. I don't know if this is racist against whites or against the Thai, but apparently the Thai ladies are unable to tell completely different looking white guys apart. That segment inspired the name to my review, and unlike my review, that segment lasted way too long.

If you give this movie the Mystery Science Theatre treatment, it's watchable and kinda enjoyable.

SPOILER: (How ironic that I use my first spoiler tag on a movie with barely any plot!!)

There is a plot-ish that leads to the only "real" and quite depressing moment. Somehow, one of the american guys meets one of the brothel ladies in public, does not recognize her or doesn't know he is in a brothel or something I DON'T KNOW. Point is: he loves brothel lady thinking she is not a brothel lady. She plays along, as her job, and agrees to go back to America with him and marry him.

In one of the final scenes, she agrees to meet him in america knowing full well she won't, before taking on another customer. Between those moments, there was a second where she contemplated a life that could have been before defaulting back into the only life she knows. It was the only real acting moment in the entire movie and caused a joke movie to end somberly.

Also, lots of boobs, hairy man dongles, and showering.

Oops, This Is Not a Hallmark Movie.
4 December 2022
Little Women era (I think?) orphanage kids hopping around and settling in a militant style orphanage during Christmas time is the plot.

This was an odd movie to rate as there was lots of juxtaposition between great and cringey acting as well as driving plot points next to ones that didn't make much sense. I initially thought it was a Hallmark movie for some reason, but Hallmark doesn't allow their stories to get that dark. Hallmark movies don't make me want to go Lecter on certain characters behaving badly.

Edward Herrmann and Nancy Stafford deliver excellent performances as usual. The main child is also top notch. A few other decent actors mixed with a slew of average or worse ones. Kinda like playing fantasy sports and getting a couple of the best players then you are already out of points so dole it out amongst the scrubs.

Overall, it's a beautiful film and shows how being surrounded by love makes you able to combat and even convert the hate of others, while those spending too much time in the hate begin spreading it themselves. The overall message trumps the problems with the film.

Oh, and when you are poor and the scurvy is setting in, an orange for Christmas is the best gift ever.

A Long-Winded Political Drama
4 December 2022
Woody plays a gay dude who pals around with political wives. It took me awhile to figure out that was his titular job.

The first half of the film dragged...an elongated gossipy pseudo-intellectual brunch amidst bridge playing. There were some good lines, but they went for quantity over quality with the dialogue. And after all that time, there was still not much character building, or a reason to care about any of them, except perhaps for Woody.

The second half picks up with a murder mystery. Carter (Woody) has some fights with his boyfriend that I thought were realistic and well done. Some quality lines are delivered such as the ever important but seldom remembered, "How does the rich get the poor to give them more money? They scare them!" Humans can't seem to fully accept this, or perhaps they do but are broken.

The ending peters out, however, realistically so in the realm of corrupt politics. One confusing bit, without spoiling: a character that helped Carter earlier is glaring at him at the end. Initially, I thought this was to keep up appearance, and when they did a tighter shot, I expected a quick smile or wink or something, but nope, just more glaring. I didn't get that at all.

First half of movie is a 3 despite top tier actors, second half is a 6. I'll round up the average because I'm a fan of Woody, even if he might have gone a bit too hard on the stereotypical gay lisp.

Deep End (1970)

I Didn't Get It or Maybe I Did?
21 November 2022
Virgin boy works in skeevy bathhouse (thought you needed to be 17+ in the UK...) and becomes infatuated with a "loose lady" who shows him attention. He is confused why she pretends to enjoy sleeping around, why she pretends to have deep feelings for her partner, and confused why she continues to lead him on.

All this, (and off screen poor parenting I'm sure), culminate into him becoming the negative stereotype of an "incel" who slowly goes off the DEEP END. Pun intended I'm sure.

The acting is fine, there are some artistic scenes, the direction is good, some interesting moments, but overall, I just didn't enjoy it. It felt rather bland and there was no one to root for. There doesn't necessarily have to be a moral character to root for, but some sort of empathy has to be developed. I ending up rooting for the hot dog vendor.

I kept checking to make sure the movie wasn't dubbed, because it felt more like one of those semi-creepy sex obsessed French films.

The, um I guess climatic scene, provided the only audible laugh from me. Sure, it was artistic, but it was silly, implausible, and without spoiling - I don't think what happened was supposed to happen twice (on the bounce back); I think they left the error in and the poor actress maintained character.

I just didn't see the point of this unengaging movie besides it being a self-indulgent art film. 5* only because it was well-acted and well-made. My enjoyment level was a 3.

A Beautiful Disaster
18 November 2022
An actress loaded on cocaine, demanding to do her own makeup, and doing a terrible job of it. An actor distracted by battling spectres of his ex-wife. An actor dubbed over. Soon to be Hall of Fame directors/writers battling the studio at every turn. B-list hero Mr. Chin forced into a background role. All of this combined to make a ridiculous movie, and yet, all that behind-the-scenes chaos added to the movie's Live Action Looney Tunes charm.

Bruce was supposed to have the lead role, but the movie would have had a very different feel and maybe less enjoyable. His scenes in a supporting role are a blast, but I would actually have liked to see him as the main baddie. That would have added some more oomph and brought in flavor from the more wacky parts of Evil Dead.

The plot is, who cares, they didn't. Watch for the silly violence, some enjoyable cinematography (the hallway of doors scene was like ASMR for the eyeballs), and some solid one-liners.

It did take me a bit to warm up to this film as I went into it not knowing anything about it, but once I accepted that it wasn't going for any one genre, and just being ridiculous wacky fun, I settled in and enjoyed the ride. It is also a pleasure to watch Chuck Norris's TV wife adding some gravitas when Bruce was absent.

Caprica (2009–2010)
7/10
Great Cast, Strong Foundation, Lacking Substance
29 October 2022
Caprica, pronounced with a small i sound and not an e sound like Paprika (or have I been saying Paprika wrong my whole life?), loosely takes place in the home planet of the Battlestar Galactica crew, 50ish years before the cylons demanded retribution for decades of suffering from verbal abuse, constantly referred to as the "N" word for Robots, and I'm not sure if I'm allowed to use this word on IMDB: toasters.

Perhaps I would have scored this higher if they had a second season, so they could better connect how we get from point A to the world of BG. I was rarely bored with the engaging acting and artistic shots, but I was frequently hoping for more.

The overall plot was slow moving as the show instead mostly focused on the examination of a few families. The main character (Zoe) is often ignored and becomes less important as the show goes on, and there is not enough to care too much about many of the other character arcs which are less arcs and more circular, obviously, since their world is doomed as we know. So, even the weird preaching in the final episode, where it seems the writers are speaking to the viewers about the importance of big government (eyeroll), doesn't hold meat since that system collapsed in a generation or two and also sounded weird coming from a teenage robot girl.

Other issues include an unsolved death and lack of resolution for several characters including one who has a nickname and is pretty important but ignored in the finale.

Overall, this feels more like a CW show at times and not the precursor to a powerful sci-fi show, but I would have tuned into a second season since a successful framework was firmly in place - they just needed to do more with it.

Twins Powers Activated
28 October 2022
This was an interesting film regarding superpowers of evil twins. The film makes several brave choices by not following normal procedure. This leads to a more artistic movie where you don't feel too invested in any one characters. It jumps in and out of the lives of a typical troubled cop/detective, but doesn't stay with it enough to feel too generic. The acting by the twins was very good and helps set the somewhat unsettling atmosphere.

Unfortunately, there was wasted potential. Motivations for the twins was not flushed out enough, the ending was okay but weak, and one plot hole was too annoying to ignore. One character points out two specific differences between the twins, but then is obviously fooled later on. Why even shoot that scene if you are going to completely disregard it later? Also, the illusions seem to occur, and crumble, when necessary to move the plot, and possibly lasted while the caster was asleep??

A somewhat generic story told/shown somewhat uniquely with a strong cast and united twin powers. An enjoyable, but flawed affair. I hope these twins star in more movies!

You can determine the filming sequence order by the location of the camera smudge
28 October 2022
It was highly irritating. The smudge should have been listed in the credits as a supporting character. It migrates from mid left to mid lower back to mid left then gone in some scenes (the ones shot either first or last I'm guessing).

Plot: man gains dino powers after parents are murdered and some not-really-but-kinda-karate-clan wants the dino powers, because ancient Chinese secret or something.

Maybe I've seen too many of these movies, but there was just not enough cheese and too many dry sections. The acting was fun and several enjoyable scenes, but also dragged in too many areas. The Voltaire cameo was nice to see.

You know what you are getting into; they show you exactly what type of movie this will be. A tongue-in-cheek farce with several entertaining scenes and actors committing well to the tone.

A solid but average entry into the intentionally ridiculous action genre. +1 for getting Karens to call the cops called on you while filming.

If you confess your sins to one Pastor this year, make it the VelociPastor, unless you were the one who murdered his parents.

My Second Favorite Cheech and Chong Movie - Mandela Combo Punch
28 October 2022
This was around my 5th time watching this movie, but 1st in a long time. After the 20 minute mark, I was wondering where Chong was. By the end of the movie, I was wondering what happened to the rest of the movie. IMDB explains the latter memory issue: for some reason, they cut off the final scenes in the non-TV version. The first issue is caused by a wormhole to a more depressing timeline where the comedy duo had a tiff and didn't work together on this project. Well, either a time wormhole or where I grew up they played Cheech and Chong movies frequently and must have just thrown this film in a marathon. Whichever possibility sounds more reasonable to you.

This is a fun film that throws lots of jokes at the wall. The ones that fall flat are usually worth an eye-roll or a chuckle while others bring back the literal use of "lol". There are some well-constructed jokes as well such as the orange cart scene.

Mandela #3: it wasn't until I was 15ish that I realized the original song is not Born in the East LA. In my timeline, Bruce ripped off Cheech, which ties back into a quick little joke in the movie of the song La Bamba.

Don't take it seriously, don't do naughty things in front of a Jesus picture especially whose eyes follow you, and when storming the border on a kickoff return, make sure you keep a lineman guarding your blindside. Now excuse me, have you seen where the lady in green went?

Dear Dictator (2017)
6/10
Flawed, Occasionally Vulgar, Quirkiness
27 October 2022
Single mom who is a semi-prostitute, raises rebel teenage daughter who gets slightly picked on in a safe silly tone, and lashes out by befriending a dictator, apparently oblivious that this job position requires murder and torture, despite the numerous reports.

I enjoyed the first half more than the second. It tried to take itself too seriously at times, to enhance the drama aspect I guess, but it didn't work as it clashed too much with the intentional ridiculousness.

That said, it makes for a good time, despite some luls. Montages usually bore me, so I fast forward through them. In this case, I kept it on because the soundtrack is boss.

Great acting from the starring ladies and the ApplePieGuy. Caine I thought played it too stale which worked great in some scenes, but made others feel out of place. Much of the rest of the cast plays as stereotypes and don't feel real which I think was the point, but when you have the main actors playing real people unaware their friends are 1-dimensional didn't really work for me.

Some funny jokes, some great acting, some plastic acting, some mother-daughter bonding, great music, some scenes I will enjoy remembering (milk-boarding!), some scenes I'd rather forget like Seth's dedicated foot loving, some dead air transitioning to the next scene they care about, and some tonal mismatching.

Overall: worth watching once.

THE SOUNDTRACK, DID I MENTION THE SOUNDTRACK? DO YOU HAVE MOJO NIXON? IF NOT...

It's Right Craic
24 October 2022
Peg and Al move to '80s Ireland, have 3-5 more children, ignore them 99% more, and have sketch show like adventures such as simultaneously performing MacGyver and Golden Girls at the gunpoint of not-IRA, but IRA-adjacent, like how lettuce is part of a taco but is not a taco. The analogy is not supposed to make sense.

The deeper into this series you go, the more they give up on any sitcom continuity and it becomes more like a sketch show with a sitcom thread holding it together. It makes for more ridiculousness but also prevents feeling sad for any of the characters' misfortunes.

Their friends are a hoot, and at first I thought I recognized Frank and the Father, but I was mistaken. I blame Airwolf and Concepta's cleavage. Fun supporting cast, and just a delightful, often outrageous, sketchy sitcom.

I looked up the two leads and was disappointed they haven't done much since! I'd gleefully watch a Season 5 or another project of theirs. If they showed Bridget's brand of cigarettes every time she smoked, they could have funded projects for life.

If you are binge watching the series with some friends, you must take a shot every time they say "choppy-changey".

Subtitles were most welcome.

Homages are Occasionally Interrupted By Some Sort of Plot
23 October 2022
The other reviews explain the movie and its numerous issues well. So I'll skip that. You should already be familiar with the basic plot, so I'll skip that too. Tonally weak. Atmosphere off. If it wasn't a franchise film with lots of callbacks, I would probably rate this a 3.

I just wanted to mention a few things:

1) Big John/Little John were fantastic. I want a full show of that. Tangent: I find it odd we don't really hear the outcry from "stealing roles" when it comes to orientation, only race and disabilities. Weird. Seems like an inconsistent outrage barometer.

Regardless, they were a hoot and I want a spin-off sitcom starring the Johns.

2) We constantly see the trope of "'good guy' with gun saves hostage with perfect shot", and we rarely see the guy missing and killing the hostage! Nice to see.

3) Cheryl/Carol would have ended this now nonsense series a long time ago with some well placed explosives fashioned from hospital equipment.

4) I think Danny McBride was channeling his old show's energy into a "serious" horror film. Didn't really work.

5) The film is a lot more enjoyable if you imagine Michael is desperately trying to suicide-by-cop-or-lynch-mob and getting increasingly frustrated how the idiot-filled town is incapable of performing this favor.

6) SMH moments when AMH tries hard to deliver a grade school speech with the utmost sincerity.

While fun at times, especially the Johns, the majority of the movie just feels lazy in terms of plot, dialogue, and production. Directing was fine I guess; just not much to work with. Perhaps all the effort was concentrated into Halloween Ends. We shall see.

A Welcome Kid-Friendly Entry in the Jurassic Park Universe (JPU)
22 October 2022
Jurassic Park is reborn. Tours are given to the public. The system collapses. Everyone flees or dies. Except for our group of 6 kids, stranded and assumed dead by the public, and apparently their families. Welcome to Camp Cretaceous.

While certainly not perfect, and one of the plot holes is mentioned above, it was quite enjoyable, touching at times, and dealt with many themes that might be basic, but are important and often forgotten and/or betrayed in adulthood.

As far as I am aware, they did a good job keeping continuity with the JPU and it was enjoyable seeing the different areas and dinosaurs. Telltale could easily make this series into another point and click JPU video game. The plot, animation, and characters kept me engaged throughout.

If rated as a kid's show, I would have given it a 9 or 10, but the producers said it isn't, so it gets graded as a PG family friendly animation show. Minor faults include: They played it safe too often with too many "resurrections". There is a relationship near the end that seems out of nowhere and forced, but maybe I missed context clues along the way. The adults seemed too bloodthirsty, like not literally, but their willingness to murder children came too easily. I don't think so many, unless soldiers trained for war, would be so willing to snuff kids. Although, it was fun seeing Haley Joel Osment trying to turn kids into ghosts so he could finally see them.

Last complaint w/o spoiling: I think the S5 trio docking on the island was wasted. I would have liked to see them involved in the plot or the climatic trickery in some way. Oh, and the very final scene was ridiculous and worthy of all the eye-rolls. It was a forced lead-in to Dominion but didn't make any sense on its own. Perhaps that will be cleared up in "Hidden Adventure", a special episode and the last installment in this series due in Nov. 2022, I think.

There are many plot holes and ignored issues, but Camp Cretaceous is otherwise a well constructed, enjoyable entry in the JPU that you can watch with your kids.

The Trailer is an Honest Depiction of this Movie
18 October 2022
...including saying it's not really a movie. No one with the last name Manson has ever lied.

So, if you enjoy the trailer, you should enjoy whatever this is. If not, well, then skip it.

Bizarre antics and dark humor abound.

One character spends most of time making a techno track that everyone hates. A dying man improves it. The studio might not like it, but I think it's a banger. (or is "it slaps" the current term?)

All the characters look to be having a good time and fully commit to the absurdity.

Nihilistic cops with no empathy... oops, oh sorry, I switched tabs and starting commenting on a real life story. But wait, these cops are also like that, but funny. And more honest. Not likeable though (intentionally), so don't expect a Reno 911 or Supertroopers. But similar vibes.

Hiding drugs in dead rats > hiding drugs in dead fish. Not sure why, but just go with it. Wonder if that part was Wareheim's idea.

Many delightful cameos including the underappreciated Ray Wise. Dude is boss. He needs a Walk of Fame star. His presence makes everything better.

I've rated movies higher that I don't really want to watch again. I'd watch this again. Make of that what you will.

The least believable thing about this movie, aside from the literal walking dead guy, is the intense shame a character feels being outed as a former homosexual? It's 2013 in San Francisco. No one cares. Every resident there in the past decade has at least dabbled in homoerotic behavior, except maybe perhaps Candance Cameron, although her wolfpack seemed ready for some hanky-panky.

Learning to Drive When You Have No More Dreams (Going Down is the Hardest Thing)
17 October 2022
Many reviewers start off with a brief synopsis of the film, but what to say when the IMDB summary blurb describes the entirety of the plot? So is my title.

Sad lady meets sad man of different lifestyles and help each other be less sad.

Acting was great all-around with one exception: it's weird they decided to cast two comedians in this type of movie. Hodgman can pull off dramatic acting as long as he gets to remain stoic. Samantha Bee cannot. She looks like she's trying to hold back a smirk (or a high-pitched wind blast) the entire time, like she just thought of another shade of orange to call Trump.

With movies that lag in portions, there is usually something pleasant to look at. Here we get actors in drab clothing in drab cars in a drab landscape. Not that the entire city is drab, just that this movie showed a lot of dirty gray streets, traffic, and washed out houses. Another issue is I think they think they are being deep when they offer wisdomatic pearls such as "you can't trust people to always behave properly". Thanks, I learned that at 2 when my mom ran my finger over with a vacuum cleaner and I think most people learn that before the age of 6. Also, they give bad advice by suggesting it's cool to pee in your gas tank. Everyone knows that's probably not a good idea and it's best to urinate in the windshield wiper fluid tank.

One scene confused me because the student driver made a boo-boo that I -thought- was technically the other driver's fault (sudden breaking causing someone to rear end you). Either it's different rules in NY state, I didn't watch the scene properly, or the writers and directors of the movie ironically do not know the rules of the road?

I think all prisoners and guards should be forced, Chinese water drip style, to watch this film on repeat until they all learn to stop hating each other.

The ending was well done and was my favorite part. I don't mean that glibly - it was the part I enjoyed most, a rare part I found interesting as we see the covered duo together for the last time. The main characters are likeable, many of the rest are not. There is one scene where Kingsley walks in on his wife hanging out with friends like they were in one of those reality housewives show. I wanted a trigger warning for that. I would have jumped straight out the nearest window if I was him. But no matter, as the focus is on the main two as they re-examine their lives before heading onto a new chapter, resetting their principles and new outlook in place. Sweet enough and not too saccharine.

If you want a somewhat touching film that will give a couple feels, give it a go, but prepare to sit through some tedium. I don't think anyone under 18 will enjoy this film, unless they really love watching Kingsley act or a middle-aged driving-newbie woman trying to parallel park.

Flatter than a stale pancake after a Yokozuna Atomic ButtDrop
17 October 2022
Technically, there is nothing wrong with this film and should at least be scored a 5, and I'm a big Kinnear fan. However, I was bored of my skull and didn't see the point of this film aside from some very generic themes told generically.

There are some enjoyable scenes and the actors do get to show off their talents at times, but....seriously, what was the point of this film? It's like no one had an actual vision and this was simply a project to make a technically decent film and collect some paydays. No one phones it in, but it was a meeting that could have been accomplished with a text or short email.

For those who prefer a quality engaging story, avoid. If you are a film student or want to study basic film and acting techniques done well, then give it a go.

I guess this movie could be described as a coming of age film? Maybe? Flat and pointless, like my titular pancake - though, still edible.

It's not a massive ride, but there is plenty of craic.
17 October 2022
Overall, this was an enjoyable show with enjoyable characters, but S3 brought the score down. I might list this as a top Ireland show, but not in any other "top 10" lists. After reading many of the reviews with too high of scores in my view, it seems the majority are grading after S2. Wonder how their scores would change now?

Not on purpose, I recently watched two different genre shows set in 20th century Northern Ireland (thanks to the robot's "you might like"). The other show being Bridget & Eamon.

Strangely, each lasted 3 seasons and had a major tonal shift going into the 3rd season, just chucking leftovers at the wall which works for a pure comedy (as B&E is), but not so much for this show. There were some good moments in the third season, and I really enjoyed "The Haunting" episode, but the 3rd season was a definite drop in quality from the first two with no real direction. Weaponizing Colm were my favorite moments. The nun lady was craic as always. (Did I use that correctly?)

A few of the Season 3 issues:

1) Not enough Orla. Or the nerdy rich girl.

2) The main character went HAM overload, which is not a remark on her weight, although she was trying her hardest to chew scenery. That style of acting felt out of place and a change of pace from her character's development. It's like her manager/agent said, "show is ending, try to steal every scene for your future!" (This isn't to say she was bad at it, it was just distracting at times.)

3) These short seasons make it more difficult to character build, especially on supplemental characters (something many UK shows have done well). The adults' acting was enjoyable (I would have liked to see the dad more), but they just weren't developed enough to enjoy an entire episode devoted to them when you only have 6/7.

4) Something bad happens to some character and we are supposed to be all emotional about it, but we barely saw or knew anything about this character.

5) At the end of S2, it seemed like our crew had bonded, and yet, in S3, they don't feel closer and do things like needlessly throw James into what very well could have been a literal life or death situation without a care in the world. Maybe that would have worked in S1, but not S3.

6) The father seemed to be developing more of a backbone, but a scene I kept waiting for (standing up to his father-in-law) never really happened.

7) The series creator said two of characters end up together. What does that mean exactly, and why not show it? Why not just say, "IDK, maybe they end up together!"

Don't let this detour you from watching an enjoyable, but not terrific, show. The 8.5 score is way too high in my view. The acting ranges from solid to great, but the characters seem to grow and revert at random and the plots, especially in S3, often feel lazy - and that's not counting the political real life plotlines they are centering the show around.

The Most Christian Movie without any Christian References or Mentions
14 October 2022
We are all aware Hallmark can be as safe and sappy as can be....this takes the cake. A lesser leading lady would have dropped my score significantly.

This movie has the traditional Hallmark warm bright colors that makes an otherwise kinda boring movie engaging. Not much happens and the stakes are very low. Lady wants to get married in January, but work issues make that not possible without some holiday magic and a super quick resolving of inlaw issues.

Very minor spoilers, not that there is anything worth spoiling: While I had no desire to trash or praise this film, I commented for one reason: these characters are so Christian (how christian are they?!), they are so Christian that the idea of living together for a few months before marriage never even crossed their minds as a thing that is possible. Tres bizarre. Additionally, money did not seem to be an issue....couldn't they at least have lived near each other for awhile? Spent a year as engaged? Last minor spoiler, I didn't like how the "bad girl" was mistreated for doing what she thought her boss wanted. Obviously, morally she was not cool, but many are trained to take initiative and know what the boss wants. When the boss changes their mind after acting the stereotypical mother-in-law, the employee shouldn't suffer!

A simple, sweet, and safe movie with light charm if that is what you are after. I honestly don't remember the ending but pretty sure they got married in January as planned. That's not a spoiler because I could be wrong.

A final note to reviewer LisaSwason, perhaps the only human to be offended by a Hallmark movie: that scene wasn't designed to mock the nursing profession, but rather an example of the typical passive-aggressive minimizing technique employed by "mother-in-law" types in many stories. It doesn't matter the profession, these type of people will find ways to knock you down. Please calm down - no one is attacking you, at least not at Hallmark.

Enjoyable Early 20th Century Heist Film
14 October 2022
A lady equipped at pulling off disguises (easier to blend in during black&white times -- before the world gained color) plans and executes some heists with the help of her trusty airship. The thefts don't amount to mastermind status, but rather fun little trickery with a few tools aside from costume changes.

It is a charming film albeit with some ridiculous scenes that might have been intentionally silly, or just due to the time period.

You probably won't laugh or cry, but a smile throughout is likely. This movie also reminds us how airships became the 8-track of the aviation world. That's a shame. We can handle hydrogen better now -- let's build some airships!

The other reviews nail it
13 October 2022
This was a simple, pleasant, feel-good movie. The acting and energy were all enjoyable. This felt like an Andy Griffith episode meets a better Hallmark movie within a sketch comedy.

One sub-plot thoroughly confused me, but that was explained perhaps by a switched reel? There was also one too many name mix-ups that caused confusion, or perhaps that was a reel issue as well.

Regardless, a delightful film. There is something refreshing about seeing a witty lady from that era who handles unwanted advances and jerkiness with firm lightheartedness. The way the nurse handles her paramour was superb and educational. The main character's mother was also a delight. Lastly, the final line is the envy of many sketch writers who struggle to end a scene.

A Euro Version of Eat Prey Love
13 October 2022
The movie is well made. The main character is adorable and a solid actress. There are a couple of scenes I enjoyed. Everything else was nauseating.

While the actress did a great job, her character gave me the willies and I kept hoping she would be Taken. Just another spoiled princess using people as she prances through life doing whatever she wants, thinking only of herself. This alone would be fine if her character developed or the consequences of this mentality were shown. Instead, the movie sees nothing wrong with her behavior.

Even her boss is helping her out while he sits alone in his bankrupt office as she makes it all about her all the time.

While I'm not "poly" myself, I am not knocking that lifestyle for those inclined, however, I find it unlikely a man would be content with his wife spreading her personal juices across the world while he is stuck surrounded by men (all hints suggested he was a straight male, so while she is out trapezing across the Earth (the safe rich parts where people do you favors for nothing), he doesn't even have a women to look at - especially when the oil rig's internet is down).

If you like Eat, Prey, Love, Sex in the City, Madame Bovary, or any of those type of stories of narcissistic women, then you should enjoy this. Also, if you are superficial, then you might enjoy staring at the leading lady for however long this movie lasts. Otherwise, you can safely skip this film and miss nothing important.
