Whiplash (2014)
Breathtaking. Masterpiece
This movie has Damien Chazelle's name everywhere.
It's a well done and very calculated movie. From color, camera angles to actors, places and specially the music.
It invites us (or at least to me) to start listening to some Jazz. But that's the second message.
The first, main and most important message it's about obsession and how it can turn against the obsessed.
Main characters it's a common 19-year-old guy from the west coast that's just trying to get a name through music but faces some challenges that change his perspective about what he wants to do and what he's willing to risk to get that.
Teaches about severe teachers and how the old teaching schools method can affect young people.
And the end is GREAT.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Batman rises
Might not everyone nor fans favorite but it's a good movie. Everything is all right, that might be the problem if you compare it with its precuel. The Dark Knight Rises gets deep down in the character of Batman as Bruce Wayne instead of Bruce Wayne as Batman, at this point Batman isn't a mask (and I'm some point of the movie it stops being) Bruce Wayne is the mask of what was left behind. I like this movie in the sense of how good can overcome bad, how even if at the start good might be loosing, it comes back. And for me is an analogy about ourselves, how we can get back on something and rise from the shadows just as Batman did. Batman is the GOAT.
Project X (2012)
Entertaining party movie
Best party movie I've seen. The way it was recorded was perfect, that sense of home-made movie or documentary makes you feel like it really happened, along with the references to TV shows and News shows.
The three main characters are some kind of cliché for this type of movies, the introvert shy boy, the extrovert shameless boy and the glasses guy with social problems. The quiet guy who "recorded" the movie was something new, I have to admit it.
In general terms, it's a good movie, for the love of God, it's a party comedy movie, you cannot expect to be an Oscar film.
And now you watch the movie you feel somehow nostalgic for the time everyone talked about this movie and how you as a teenager dreamed with sometjing like this.
Superbad (2007)
Funny
This is a generic 2000s teenager comedy movie so you never except a deep movie it's just about some teenagers living their last high school days trying to act cool before college but even tho I like it, it simple and entertaining if you want to watch something with no serius plot or advanced characters think about. Besides that, it's an simple 2000s movie son don't expect it to be inclusive. It is also an important movie for the main actors: De Cera, Stone and Hill because this movie became an important part of their caterer and a movie that launched them to more star movies. I've watch it many times and never get tired of its simplicity and foolishnes.
Monsters University (2013)
Emotional value
I like this one more than Monsters Inc. They fit the second movie very well along with the first one, of course, the first one was already done but the way they connected the plot between those two movies was great. Animation for the time is great I really can't see why so many people hate this movie it's a good precuel and comparing other pixar's secuel movies Monsters University feels outstanding. I wouldn't say a 10/10 but the university ambient, music, characters, can make you feel like you're inside MU. Fist time a saw it made me wanted go to an University but now I see it again makes me love that age, favorite Pixar movie.
Era ora (2022)
Best Italian movie I've ever seen
Finally a good Italian movie that it's not about the mafia.
Completely underrated movie.
You'll understand completely the main character, his life and how he relates to others.
At the beginning it might look like another story about someone who's lost in time and repeats the same day again and again until they realize something and everything sudently changes but no.
This is not a science-fiction movie so it never explains the time traveling trips, in fact is never very clear when he travels in time but he does and that's the main message about the movie: you never realize when times goes by you can just enjoy it and that's OK. What's not OK it's been always busy and never realize that the treasure is already with you
Love the change on the character that comes from care just about himself to care about others since the life he was destined for has suddenly changed.
La La Land (2016)
A love letter
In Spanish there's a word than can esaily fit this movie "PELICULÓN" in caps.
It's a must seen.
One of the best movies of this century.
I was too young for this kind of movies when it went on.
I'm no a fan of musical, but this movie made me love musicals.
The classical Hollywood tone with the love story gives you nostalgic vibes and it's perfect. Always thought this could win so many Oscar's and I'm happy.
It's a railcoaster of emotions. Happiness, sweetness, love, sadness, enjoyment... Damien created a master piece about that platonic love that every of us has gone trough either when we were children or adults and the couple's chemistry works the same, you will feel in love again. There's noting wrong about this movie. Cast is amazing, scenarios, makeup, script, everything was perfectly placed.
You can even feel the movie quite short or some feeling of two movies at the same time.
Grown Ups (2010)
An American Letter
Somehow this feels like a latter from the 2000's about American lifestyle, traditional family and a little diversity along with the time. It's entertaining, something you'll enjoy a Sunday Morning with nothing else to do. Contains the Adam Sandler's jokes formula so it may seem repetitive sometimes but still be appreciated. The characters are a little cliché but it's just to fit the formula and the script. Besides, it's just a comedy movie, it's not intended to be perfect or the best movie ever, just something you can laugh either cringe or embarrassment, more if you understand where it comes from, just another American summer movie.
Babylon (2022)
A roller coaster of emotions
Babylon feels like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for a moment. The fall of the actors from the early Hollywood and the changes the industry brings with and still does. Is grossive, of course, thats an element Damien Chazelle wants to transmit through the movie because the conclusion is completely different and provides a good message. Like other Damien Chazelle movies, Babylon is a little complex but still great. Some may not like the graphical content but remember: it's an adult film. Even if some young child or teenager watches the movie, they might not understand it in the complete way. So it's not just for adults for the graphic content but because the complex of the movie and connections between them.
It's somehow an history about the film industry with a different side of the same coin. Other movies have already looked into the "known" side, but this, this really felt diferent.
If there were less graphical content and less dramatic (with fictional ideas), it'd be a 10/10.
Lost in Translation (2003)
Sofia's Coppola personal mark
The entire movie is marked by some feeling that goes around Sofia Coppola. Scarlet's acting is a proof of that.
The movie is pretty nice. Aspires to be some underground critic movie. Doesn't contain several important dialogs (besides Japanese ones) and plays with the screenplay, music, noises, ambience, its a really good movie to appreciate besides the message it tries to give.
The message about the Emotional crisis everybody at least once in their life has gone thru and doesn't really specify the message or the conclusion but as said before, it plays with the movie without needing any dialogs.
Her (2013)
A movie about changes
At first sight it may seem as a romantic movie.
Even after movie ended I stopped for a minute to think about what I just watched.
The movie doesn't define if the technology is good or bad. Doesn't even define relationships.
The movie is about changes after a "tragedy".
After something happens to us we belive is our fault or we think about it every time, but one of the quotes about the movie is to ensure change.
In the last part of the movie we can realize that everything that has happened is positive for a change. The lost of the OS is the greatest. For me, they left humans so they healed each other without their presence. For others it's a message about changing and stop controlling our present and even stop thinking about controlling our past. We just need to simply follow the flow.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Good movie
Besides it's not my favorite genre I decided to discover what everyone sees in this movie as special. After watch it ended up being a good movie. Technically speaking, the movie is good, the actores where good, the script was good and even tho I wouldn't say it's science fiction because the only science is Mark Ruffalo pressing buttons I can recognize it's different than fiction. Now speaking about the sentimental spot, the movie treats it well just like a romantic movie, you got ups and you got downs so it gives an air of a cliche but a the same time it's different than most love/sad love stories.
