Solaris (2002)
Great Novel, Great Movie A+
The movie was great. Soderberg made a great film. I love the eeriness and the slow movement of the film. This movie has done a very good job of capturing the mood of the novel. I read quiet a few reviews here that are crying about the movie being slow and hard to understand. If you want an easy to watch sci fi film , go see Nemesis (not to say that Nemesis is a not a great movie, it is). Then there are those of you who start dissing the novel. Solaris is considered one of the greatest sci fi novels of our time, so to call it second rate sci fi is just plain stupid. As for the film, this movie did something that I hoped it would, it took a portion of the book and adopted it into a fantastic, artistic film, full of psychological twists, great acting and spectacular cinematography. To recreate the book to the t is simply impossible. The genious of this book is that for the large part it happens in the mind. So no two people will see this story in the same way. It is also wrong to say that Soderberg was trying to compete with 2001 some how. Just because this is a psychological movie that happens in space does not make it a rip-off of 2001. This movie was about half the book, and i understand why. If the whole book was to be made into the movie, the film would be way too long to show in a theater. Overall, this movie was done very well, I love the book and I love the movie. To those of you who haven't seen this movie I advise the following: if you're looking to see another installment of 2001, don't go, if you're looking to see a Trek type film, don't go, if you're looking to see a picture that is nothing like you've ever seen before and which will seem different every time you watch it, while being very uncommericial, mesmorising and brilliantly made, GO SEE IT !!! 10 stars.
Brilliantovaya ruka (1969)
Gets better every time I see it.
This is a comedy that stood the test of time. I've recently bought the newly released DVD of this movie and it's worth every penny. Of course I've seen this comedy a million times on TV and video, but the DVD makes this funny in a whole new way. I believe that even english speaking audiences will love this flick if they get the DVD. The translation into English is superb. Speaking Russian myself , it's actually very funny to hear this Soviet cinema classic translated into English , having seen it only in Russian before. Now , I believe that even our friends in Turku, Finland would find this film funny. Mironov , Nikulin and Papanov give superb comical performances by any standards. And the actors who's voices are used to dub this film into english are an excellent match. What can I tell you, go to your nearest Russian video store and get this DVD, you'll love it.
