Os Outros (2023)
Beware of your neighbors
First, I must say that the quality of brazilian content keeps getting higher and higher. This one could be placed among famous american shows.
The story starts pretty simple. We see two ordinary families then follows a fight between their children so the families clash. Simple. But there goes the turning point and the level of absurd, suspense and unpredictability of the parents' actions keeps surprising you. A lot of secrets and lies are uncovered. Everyone is not who you think they are.
Also, there are some pretty disturbing moments which might be hard to digest but they contribute to the overall atmosphere and set the right tone.
Long story short, if want to watch something thrilling, unpredictable with twists and turns this brazilian jam is what you need. Watch it and see for yourself!
Volver a Caer (2023)
Mexican version of Anna Karenina
Adapting Leo Tolstoy's 1877 novel Anna Karenina is not an easy task. It's a complex novel with a lot of storylines and characters. But this version is surprisingly good, considering the fact that it takes place in modern Mexico.
I liked the cast. The lead actress does a great job, showing Ana's struggles and personal dilemmas. Secondary characters are also fine. They even tried to save some of the characters' original names.
The only noticeable difference between is the background, I guess. The original novel is set in the Russian Empire which was a very conservative society where a romance between a married woman and a young man was simply unimaginable. I guess now it doesn't seem so rare and controversial. Some traditional values are also altered to make it more modern. But still the story is nicely adapted and the writers did a very impressive work trying to modernize it and even give it a Mexican flavor.
Long story short, it's a good version of a classic novel. If you like Russian literature you might enjoy it but watch it in Spanish.
Sagrada familia (2022)
What it's like to be a mother
First, the show is really good, I finished it in 2 days, its so addictive you can't stop watching.
I liked the central topic and how it showed us the moral dilemma that mothers face. The main idea is to examine the link a mother forms with her child.
The main character here can be seen a villain, caring mother, criminal etc. But I sorta understand her pain, losing a child is always hard and accepting it can be even harder. But the question is how can a mother that lost her child do the same to another mother?
Wouldn't it be the same suffering?
Also, the actors are great in their portrayals, the atmosphere is also pleasant, I liked how it is set in the 90s.
So, a good show that asks important questions and lets you find your own way of answering them.
Todas as Flores (2022)
Finally something good from Globoplay
Finally a decent novela came from Globoplay. I like watching novelas as it helps with learning Portugues and this one sure is a real jam.
Starts of pretty strong, it has several subplots with the stories interconnecting in rather unexpected ways.
The plot of a homeless family particularly touched me as it was hard to watch this cruel side of Brazilian life.
The central story of a sweet blind girl and her evil sister and mother is also intriguing as you keep waiting when the sweet one will show her nails. The cast is great, real talents. The locations are marvelous, showing one more time the beleza of Rio.
Only one problem: Globoplay releases only 5 episodes per week! What the...
The Watcher (2022)
Fun watch on a rainy weekend
Before giving it a try I've read lots of negative reviews. But it only sparkled my interest and guess what, it actually worked!
Sure, it a slow burn thriller, it unravels pretty slow, you need to be patient but it worth it. The casting is good, I fell in love with Naomi Watts, playing this lovely wife with her perfect sense of fashion.
The atmosphere was nice, twists and turns satisfied me. I kept guessing who the watcher was. As I've read people complaining about the ending, but it was actually good. This is life and obviously it could've been anyone, so it lefts you baffled, and this is what I call a good show!
Besides, what could be possibly better than a thriller show on a rainy October evening?
Toda la sangre (2022)
Interesting dive into Mexican folklore
At first, it may seem like another show where a detective tries to solve a murder spree but this show offers something more to the plate. The murders are deeply related to the Mexican history, traditions, bringing up legends of ancient sacrifices. When I started watching it I didn't expect anything exceptional but I ended up liking it. The actor are pretty good and the plot is quite decent, moreover, it got me thinking about Mexico as a nation born from a mixture of different cultures and the controversy it contains. Long story short, if you like detective stories but want to watch a story with a cultural context this show might be a good choice.
