John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
Disappointment.
I loved the first 3 movies of the series, so I had high expectations when Chapter 4 came out. And I was so disappointed.
The movie is so drawn out and it's just doesn't make sense to me - there wasn't any clear intention for any character's actions - like why Nobody and Caine kept changing his mind over whether he should kill Wick or not? The killing over time just became repetitive - Wick just got away with many falls and attacked with virtually no harm at all. Many many more plot holes made this movie a pain to watch.
And then I read that Chapter 4 is the only movie not written by the original screenwriter. And then it made all the sense in the world.
First Love (2022)
So. Many. Tears. Overall beautiful
I might be biased here since First Love was one of my favourite songs back in college - I myself have cried over failed relationships with this song in the background - so instantly the show has had a hold on me.
It was beautifully shot and the acting was very believable. Being a mom, I loved to see the mom-son relationship unfold and cried so much watching the torn Noguchi parting with her young baby hoping he'd have a better future with the dad. Great acting of the actress there.
However, I think the plot could have been better and more realistic, especially the present part. I mean, what's with Namiki breaking up with his girlfriend and still decided to stood up Noguchi? It doesn't make sense to me. I wish he could have been like "sure she doesn't remember our past but let's make the most of the present that we have now". Overall their grownup plot line was weak compared to the young days, and sometimes felt forced and drawn out.
Wednesday (2022)
A lot of it doesn't make sense - and i'm not even a fan of the originals
First off, I've not watched the original show and movies, so I'm not here to compare.
Wednesday has potential, and Jenna's acting is quite good. But the plot sometimes is just so random, seems to be there to fill the time, and many times an insult to any audience with any brain at all. The characters lack chemistry, none of the romance was believable.
The show is very much for tweens - for those targeted audience I'm sure it's a success. Anyone above that age range might find many flaws. Which is disappointing since the show has potential to be so much more, with Tim Burton's involvement in it.
Mom, Don't Do That! (2022)
I've never laughed so hard. What a gem!
I'm more than half way through this drama, and don't want it to end. The show is so hillarious and quirky, very original too. Granted I think the scriptwriter had so many ideas going into it that the drama can be somewhat all over the place, but I really appreciate that. Got me going "wtf" so much I honestly can't anticipate what would happen next.
Also, I enjoyed the cast a lot. Most of them aren't particularly good looking (to me personally) and that makes the drama so much more down to earth and compelling.
But OMG Chris Wu is SUCH an eyecandy though!!! 😉😉😉
Overall a great drama in my book. Recommend!
Shards of Her (2022)
A compelling watch
I see what the other review said about the highly unlikely plot of the 1st episode, and I admit I almost gave up on the show because of that. But I'm glad I stuck around (and also binge-watched the whole thing in one evening crying next to my sleeping child lol)
The main characters were believable and did a good job conveying such a dark subject. Even though there weren't much of any love scene, the chemistry were there and I keep hoping they would fall in love but I get that Lin Chen Xi has to walk out of the tunnel alone and doesn't need to be rescued.
Overall I like it very much and will look for other works of the actor/ actress to satisfy my new found Taiwanese drama fever haha.
