Galaxy Quest (1999)
Well worth seeing.
Being a Star Trek fan, I must say that this movie is very good at poking fun at the Star Trek franchise.
Tim Allen is a spitting image of William Shatner playing James T Kirk of the USS Enterprise, the original series. Anyone that has seen the original series will instantly recognise their captains "Duck and roll" technique in this movie.
All actors are doing a good job through out the movie. Especially Tony Shalhoub as the doped-up-has-been-actor. He manage to be high through the whole story. And Sigorney Weaver as the Lt Uhura copy whos job it is to repeat what the computer say.
In adition to this, clever script, especially if you've seen Star Trek. Good visual effects. All in all the best comedy I've seen for a long time.
Well worth a watch!
Alien Resurrection (1997)
Sad, sad ending(?) to such a good movie series
Well, what can I say about this one? It has totally lost whatever it was that made the other movies good. Sure, they have all been a little worse then the one before, starting With the excelent Alien, followed by the almost excelent aliens and then the okay movie Alien3. But this, is a total letdown. In my opinion there is no reason to see this one. Actually, if you've seen the others, it's even more reason to skip this one as it takes some of the "glow" from the others by bringing down the franchise.
It's not so strange though... The best movies seldom benefit from a followup. (There are exceptions though)
So, don't see this movie unless you feel you have to. You are likely to be very, very disapointed.
Silent Trigger (1996)
Slow but good looking.
In my opinion, this movie is pretty uneventful and somewhat boring. It's okay to let long time pass between action sequences if you know how to fill the "downtime" well... This movie doesnt.
However, this movie utilize some of the best lighting I've seen. And considering this is sort of a B-movie, it's simply amazing. They've used lots of colored, cleverly placed, spotlights to enhance the walls. You could almost be fooled to think the movie was designed by an interior decorator.
So, if you are interested in the technical aspect of moviemaking, it's worth seeing just for this reason. This movie should be an excelent guide movie on how to use spectacular lighting the correct way if anyone are teaching a course in this.
So, to sum up, slow movie, some stupid scenes that people have mentioned here before, but nice lighting makes it worth watching.
eXistenZ (1999)
Good movie
I don't understand why this film has got a relatively low rating. It's good, and comparing it to matrix is really dumb... They do have the "live in the gam" kind of thing in common, but they are totally different movies and they don't have the same goal. Matrix was designed to target actionlovers where as eXistenZ is targeted towards horror. That said, I did like Matrix a lot too, but as I said, it's not fair to compare these two. If we where, we could say that Matrix isn't but a more expensive copy of Tron, which in is days was probably more ahead of its time than Matrix is/was.
So, this movie is great, as is almost all the movies David Cronenberg makes. As often with his stuff he portraits pretty nasty stuff as being both quite disgusting and erotic at the same time, as in his movie Videodrome which this one has many similarities to when it comes to the effects.
To sum up, I say watch the movie, and judge for yourself. Do not expect a matrix style movie, be prepared for a movie more along the lines of Hellraiser (the first one) but smarter horror.
(Note; Hellraiser have similar gore-erotic lines through the story if you remember why Mr Cotton started playing with the cube in the first place)
