Absolutely Brilliant
2 November 2020
After watching STNG passionately during its original showing from 1987 to 1992, I have to say this series to date was a superbly evocative and very well made piece of work with a great storyline and brilliant special effects. I am eagerly awaiting season 2.

I found the gradual introduction of the STNG characters heartwarming after so long, the impression the show made on me at the time was profound and to see some of my favourite characters return after more than 30 years was quite emotive. Patrick Stewart, now in his late 70's does not try to pretend in character that so much time has passed but sticks to the essence of what he was in the original series and later movies. It was awesome to see the return of Jonathan Frakes ,Marina Sirtis and Brent Spiner again. Jeri Ryan as 7 of 9 is as stunning to look at today as she was in Voyager, and it was great to see the return of Jonathan Del Arco as Hugh to help in the context of the Borg part of the plot.

I thought also the introduction of new characters fit well, Commodore Oh was as driven and determined as you would expect from a radical Vulcan/Romulan hybrid, Rios plays a Han Solo type character while his dark and troubled side is developed along side martial artist Elnor, a strong grudge holding but talented detective Raffi and the essential medical doctor Jurati. With the exception of the Narek character, who came across as far too millennially human, I thought all characters were developed beautifully.

I respectfully with the naysayers here, who say this is not Star trek, that it is a dystopia opposite of Star Trek. Instead, I thought Star Trek Picard brought back the essence of STNG characters that are now taking on a world 30 years advanced. The characters stick to their morals and beliefs of STNG. I see comparisons to Discovery but Picard and Discovery to me are diametrically opposed. In fact it is Discovery I found deviating from the Star Trek Vision, not Picard. Discovery tried too hard to adjust to the modern world and appeal to acceptance of race, religion, culture and sexuality. It is Discovery that would make Gene Roddenberry turn in his grave, not Picard.

I am sincerely looking forward to the introduction of Worf, Geordi , Beverly Crusher and anyone else that can bring back the memories.

Cannot wait for more seasons.

For Disneyworld goers only...
2 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Judging from a lot of the reviews I have read here I think people expected a bit too much from a PG rated predictable dino Hollywood blockbuster. Object: maximize revenue. How: maximize target audience: kids, mums and dads and guardians will pay also to take them along. GI Joe meat lovers, teeny boppers, and movie watchers who like the thinking done for them, CGI and perhaps 3D appreciators.

It is not a new idea to weaponise a new and useful technology, there was the essence of a good story that could had the potential to carry extreme suspense but was poorly executed despite setting itself up for a sequel. Instead of creating the drama and suspense it felt like the director created and emphasized an atmosphere of a day out in a Disney park.

The character flaws have been dealt with in many other reviews and I can only add one piece of absurdity that I noticed, what was the point of the Indian CEO's bad helicopter flying ? His role adds nothing to the plot and his character set up as the buffoon to laugh at, and when his helicopter crashes in a ball of flames. Left me wondering just... what is the point ?

I suggest Ridley Scott direct the next installment. And target an M or even R rated audience

Low budget nonsense
18 September 2015
Looking at the movie synopsis "In the near future....etc" I was expecting at least the look and feel of the film to be somewhat futuristic or at least using technology of today. Yet from the opening scene shows old style chunky cathode ray monitors of yesteryear as their computer interfaces but wait a minute, one of the guys is walking around with an ipad... come on, from which junkyard did they scrounge up the CRT's ?. It was a bad credibility start but managed to grind through the implausibility for the most. The set is as claustrophobic as the plot with B grade acting to boot a B movie. Give this one a miss.

More a statement of director's view of the world today...
22 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Rather than simply trying to tell an old testament biblical tale, this movie was another of Ridley Scott's exploration of human ideology and draws many parallels with what are experiencing in todays world of religious, political and economic extremism.

Moses is a man outcast by affluent society because of his religious origin, stripped of all privilege and wealth and left to fend for himself in the desert. As the discontent grows, he finds motivation in a revelation by god of his role in life. From here begins a journey of piety that drives a revolution to overthrow his oppressors.

We see one side, wealthy and prosperous, being guided by prophecies handed down by generations and another who are enslaved oppressed and hoping for salvation and delivery to the promised land. Ultimately their belief is this will come from devout obedience to an enigmatic leader who himself is guided by by a supreme being.

The parallels of what we see today are striking. We see secret militia training camps. Tit for tat killings. Wars of attrition.

If you were an Egyptian citizen, you might view the Pharoh as your leader and enforcer of law and order, whereas Moses would be the leader of a group of a brutal and violent regime of religious extremists that threaten the very fabric of what you call normal society.

The scary part is that Moses' acts have the backing of a 'real' god.... which is exactly what extremists today believe support and drive their actions and is the message I think Mr Scott was trying to get across to the audience.

Delivery wise, I found the visuals stunning and worth the experience in 3D. Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton and Ben Kingsley deliver excellent performances, and we know Mr Scott, likes Sigourney Weaver, but she is simply too typecast for me to fit in the role of Queen.......

Potential science fiction spoiled by fantasy
4 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I expected a scientifically accurate and visually astounding epic akin to "The Red Planet" but instead I got another zombie movie.

What starts well with captivating cinematography and character development, degenerates from inconceivable to impossible when an astronaut collapses inexplicably into a pit and becomes infected with an indigenous bacteria that transforms him into a mindless violent zombie. It somehow is able to breathe the toxic martian atmosphere and is blessed with superhuman strength and predictably proceeds to infect the remaining crew with the same affliction albeit with extreme violence and gore. The infectious pathogen transforms its hosts into zombies and while apparently brain dead can still manage to seemingly work to conspire to intelligently hunt down and kill or infect the remaining crew members, even to the extent of escaping from a compound after being trapped by finding a way to explode the airlock and exit to continue their rampage.

I must admit I am puzzled by the demand for the zombie theme almost as much as I am by the similar fascination for the equally senseless and fatuous vampire theme. I am saddened that this movie fell into the former category.

A complete waste of precious time
22 June 2011
I rented this film thinking it was the Natalie Portman release, oh my gosh was I wrong.

Caught by Asylum yet again. The most appalling and cheapskate CGI I have ever see, inaccurate story and weak acting, my goodness, what is this production company really all about. The beast fighting where you see slashing at monsters which are off the screen to save CGI efforts are by example simply laughable.

Afraid i could not finish this one, I'd seriously recommend you do not waste your precious life's time even verifying the above. And be careful of your title, make sure it is not an Asylum production.

A stretch of the imagination -peurile
17 July 2009
You know it never ceases to amaze me how poor alien technology could be.

I mean how can an alien spacecraft that is capable of traversing 3000 light years in an instant can be so inaccurate when it comes to its weapons fire when pursuing a clapped out old taxi on a straight road ? How can a top secret military base be subverted so easily, and the staff convinced to evacuate by a stranger with no ID ? This is just a couple of examples of the many I had to stretch my imagination beyond the realms of acceptability to rate this movie with any degree of credibility.

Perhaps I am being too critical, I alas I am not a kid anymore but I'd hoped for a bit more pragmatism to broaden its appeal. The plot really had some potential for something bigger and better, its potential reminded me of "Starman" from 1984 or "Contact" from 1997. I think just a bit more thought may have had me thinking this movie exceeds the puerile category.

Shocker
1 July 2007
Oh my god, Sorry, do I qualify to critique this movie, I couldn't watch more than 1/2 of it.

I expected a bad movie with a lot of CGI but I got on with too much dialog and extremely poor CGI.

Pretty gals that try to be mercenaries, tough guys that just are not tough, its just not the way it would be. CGI absolutely shocking, the size of the alien robots changes from shot to shot.

If the matrix has been made, why try to make this. Who put their money up to even contemplate making this kind of rubbish.

Don't waste more money and try to watch this.

Implausible
28 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Why doesn't anybody see how implausible this all is ? I don't mind using my imagination but I think this movie requires just a bit too much... in a universe this size, some things are just too convenient:

It just so happens that there is a planet waiting for a crash land after micrometeorites damage the vessel irreparably.

It just so happens that it has a breathable atmosphere, pressure and temperature are within tolerable limits to sustain human life.

It just so happens that the landing site is flat, soft and free of obstacles.

It just so happens that on a planet so large that they crash land within walking distance of an apparently abandoned installation from previous visitors.

It just so happens that the previous visitors left behind a near fully operational spaceship escape craft.

It just so happens that they crash land almost exactly at the time the 22year periodic eclipse occurs so that the hungry monsters can come out to play..

implausibility rating : maximum .... but if you accept the convenient factor necessary to make an exciting storyline, and the rest is well done.

Poorly Cast and Factually inept
27 June 2007
It's rare that I come a cross a movie that is as poorly cast and as factually inept as this one.

Dolly girls that belong in fashion boutiques and are more concerned about the position of their long hair behind their ears do not become professional demolition consultants, nor do they become space shuttle pilots. Long haired male models that are 25 years too young for the role do not become NASA mission controllers.

The list goes on, but please don't start me on the scientific ineptitude, a good list of it is already in this review section.

Shame that a good idea is ruined by poor casting and insufficient research.
