Jim Cavizel has to be the actor with the narrowest emotional range I've seen. He is not at all able to lift this movie on his own, fortunately he is so rounded by more competent actors, even the small kids that play Rocio and Miguel are far more compelling than he ever is.
Is commendable that the movie exposed a terrible I'll in our current society, I was really overwhelmed by some of the scenes involving Rocio and Miguel, however the movie besides those 2 or 3 good scenes has little else to offer. Story is strangely told with an inconsistent tone. Good character moments from everyone except Cavizel who is exasperatingly robotic and unemotional during all the story runtime.
At the end the story is serviceable, some gold acting now and then but plagued with religious undertones and a message that competently presented.
This move in the hands of more capable and talented creators would have a greater and deeper impact, it's extraordinary premise is wasted in a bland and ultimately forgettable movie.
The worst offending piece to me was the after credit scene, where Alejandro the producer explains the horrors of this emerging industry and promised to give us the audience a way to fight back (I was really thrilled). He ultimately disappoints us by stating that the only thing we can do to help is promote the movie by buying tickets for other people to see... really? Dude you just made a movie where the protagonist plays Tim Ballard; a guy that literally went to the most insidious depths of hell to save children risking his and his families lives... and that's your recommendation? "Make my movie successful that will do it for the kids" ... my face palm was audible across the entire movie theater.
Bottom line, just wait for it to come on streaming, watch it if there is nothing else to see. Expect little of it and prepare to be disappointed.
