Yunhui-ege (2019)
my review
Review written thru texts w/ friend:
a slow burner for sure-- BUT i thought it was a peaceful slow and the pacing was really nice
the walk after the meeting on the bridge between them... you can tell there's so much history and so much left unsaid and so much wanting to be said but just being in each other's presence is enough
i loved the mother/daughter relationship in this, it was realistic
I was so shocked to see how realistically it was portrayed
And the daughter... being in highschool... aware of the mom's feelings and loneliness and the way her mom just passed thru life.... TRULY HIGH EQ
Friend: as stunted as it is in the beginning it thaws, ironically in the winter of japan and becomes what it is.
Me: what does this mean??
Friend: in the beginning there's this palpable distance between the two, hinting at a wasted lifetime for yoonhee and a growing independence from her daughter. And to fix that they both need to be honest and open and that's what gives them both catharsis in the end
me: oh yeah . Its like when the daughter realizes how much her mother knows about her life and when her daughter asks, "why didn't you tell me you knew?" and the mom goes "i've been waiting for you to open up"
that portrayed perfectly what a strained mother-daughter relationship looked like
with a mother that had a history she couldnt quite let go of and an identity that she had to hide from her own child
so much repsect for the director; Lim Daehyung;;; i read the interview and he wanted to understand and challenge his view of a woman's world through the lens of a man
And constantly put himself in an uncomfortable position and asked many questions
AND ALSO KIM HEE-AE'S ACTING???? THE EMOTIONS??? Im flabbergasted.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Review written... through texts w/ a friend:
TO ME it's not a 'romance' story of falling in love-- sure the genre is romance, but i didn't perceive it that way
-- it's a story of hurt, resentment, realization, regret, fear, hopelessness, heartache, and ultimately a new beginning of an old past.
We can see the raw unfiltered emotions along with the camera movement that showed them as real people and not just movie characters
These days movie characters are so exaggerated and special effects takes place which is cool too!! But also takes away from the actual message of the current scene
Makes me inspired to want to create something when i see this
friend: the story is a winner from the start, just the concept of a way to erase someone from your memory it's so ruthless, so personal and so vindictive. To be on the receiving end of that must really be the worst thing in the world and i love how the process is explored in this dreamlike, trippy way
i think the film explores how the outcome, especially the negative outcome of a relationship can sort of erase all the beautiful things and moments and glances and languages that a relationship, that being in love can give birth to and how sad that is
also that a relationship encompasses everything, the good and the bad. Without the lows the brilliant highs can't shine as brightly
me: YEAH and i love that clementime is portrayed as an impulsive person and the one and only impulsive decision joel does is deciding to do the exact impulse choice that clem did, erasing his memory of her
which causes him to come to the realization that he doesnt actually want to erase her but instead wants to be with her even more
YES and the film really encompasses the phrase ' you only realize what you had once you lost it '
Two of my fav scenes:
1. Clementine in her orange sweater. Joel and clem are sitting on steps looking out at the beach. Clem says '"this is it joel. It's gonna be gone soon." what do we do?" joel: ".... enjoy it." Everything up until this moment, joel tries to desperately cling onto the memories of her, but once he realizes it's a futile attempt, he finally resigns and chooses to enjoy these last few moments he has with her
2. End of movie: clem: "im not a concept joel. Im just a f'ed up girl who's looking for my own peace of mind. Im not perfect." joel: i cant see anything i dont like about you." clem: but you will. But you will." joel: "okay." And this is the opposite- It's his chance to get her back and he's taking it despite everything they've been thru
He realizes what he lost and he's not going to lose her a second time- THIRD TIME (second was when they were erasing his memories)
He's not going to lose her a third time.
After Yang (2021)
my review
My evaluation thru texts w/ a friend:
honestly it was so slow and i closed my eyes at times cause it was just too long. There was another review I read on here that said you should watch it if you're in an introspective mood-- and boy do I heaaaavvillyyyy agree with that. This will be an unbearable film to watch if you liked 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' and you're interested in more A24 films. You really gotta put yourself //in the mood// throughout this entireeee film to be able to get through it, and thankfully, I'm proud to say I finished this film.
I think it couldve been condensed or Kogonada could've added more to the very still scenes. But i read his interview with theguardian to understand his style of films better.
So i understand why he created this film now, and esp why he used AI, sci-fi advanced world but slowed it down and still focused on the human relationships between AI + humans.
Rather than the technology itself@
He wanted to focus more on the grief, loss, and healing of losing someone / something, but i would have liked to see more of a relationship between the mom/dad , and especiallyyyyyyyy the dad/daughter.
I wasnt invested in any of the characters- character development was lacking in this movie. I only had slight consideration for yang, but since dad was the main character, it didn't feel like he deserved main character energy bc there wasnt anything that was extremely likeable about him.
Didn't feel like his and his daughter's relationship even progressed thru the film.
But what i LOVED about the film was the cinematography, and the stillness of the scenes for the aestheticness of it. But def not for the film itself.
The film was visually pleasing to watch.
Emotional and touching wise? Didn't quite hit it for me. But after reading his interview, I understand the film much more and his style and his vision. And after reading his interview, I appreciate the film much more, and Kogonada as a film director. Would I watch it again? Absolutely not.
