Hard to judge something that left such a strong impression on you as a child, but i find myself able to separate e associate this movie with a clear vision. First of all, it's very flawed, rough, and at points ridiculous in its incompetence. Hardly a kind of movie that would work with those who can't see behind the expressive machinations of the spectacle. This movie never fool us into thinking it's real except for wide shots along the beach and animal footage clearly taken from the real thing. Secondly, as a dramatic play, a stylised representation, it offers little in the way of surprises. So why does it work? Well,watch it.
