Needs some fine tuning
1 March 2011
After a friend of mine suggested I watch this, I decided to play catch-up on BBC iplayer a few weeks ago. The first 15 minutes of it and I thought "OMG - this is like an updated Blake's 7 I can't watch this!!" Recently the same friend complained I hadn't given it a chance and told me it was "getting good". So I gave it another go ... I thought "I'm gonna sit through this and REALLY try to like it".

Okay - the first episode was PAINFUL. The characters seemed boring, the kid that kept repeating his "tiger tiger" poem almost put me off watching ... but I struggled through. First episode felt very long. However I persevered and watched a second episode ... then a third ... then a fourth ...

It's actually turning out to be quite interesting in certain respects but doesn't have me completely hooked as yet.

I think the characters could be improved - they are currently REALLY difficult to warm to - they have no spark. They feel a bit like cardboard cut-outs at the moment, stilted and awkward - and certainly need a bit more depth.

Looking past the stilted characters are the predictable character relationships ... just a bit boring and uninspiring - again no SPARK.

The story is somewhat intriguing in parts but with the lack of charismatic characters or interesting dialogue it just makes it difficult to wade through.

The jury is still hung for me on this.

This show COULD be better, but needs a whole lot of fine-tuning if it ever wants to become a really good show.

Jaw Dropping
20 October 2008
This movie was amazing! It had all the ingredients for a successful horror: mystery, suspense, paranoia, gore, shock, and an interesting storyline. What also added to it's fear factor was the realism with which it was filmed.

Whilst watching I felt as though I were actually there - it sucks you in and makes you feel involved, making the scary moments even more frightening! The movie brings with it a feeling of claustrophobia which creates a tension that builds as the movie progresses to it's jaw-dropping, edge-of-your-seat climax.

Even though this movie is of the shaky camera, zombie flick variety it is done with a slightly different edge making it feel quite original.

Not very good

Warning: Spoilers
My philosophy. A movie has to have a great ending. It is the ending of the movie which makes or breaks it. A dull movie with a great ending can redeem it to legendary status. However, a movie that's intriguing and captivating with an ending that is poor will ruin the entire movie.

One such movie is Next starring Nicolas Cage.

Because of the main character's ability to see 2 minutes ahead in time EXCEPT when experiencing the future with a certain young lady, this made the plot a little confusing. It was difficult to tell what was happening in 'real time' and what has happening 'two minutes ahead'.

I watched this movie right to the end, expecting something explosive or at least something thought-provoking to come out of it.

However, I found the ending to be akin to " ... and then he woke up and it was all a dream". it made me want to throw something at the screen or demand my money back - what an injustice! When you watch an interesting movie with a bad ending it makes you feel CHEATED. ROBBED. MADE A TOTAL FOOL OF. DISSATISFIED. The dissatisfaction being that you were misled into watching something that was incomplete with a stupid unthought out ending tacked on.

Strained ...
19 August 2007
... washed up, wrung out, drained, finished, rinsed. These are just a few descriptors that ran through my mind as I watched through the tedium of burnt out gags in the charmless wonder that was Shrek the Third.

"Has the magic of Shrek finally disappeared?" I had to ask myself.

I felt there was less charm and more attempts at 'clever' gags which just fell flat on their faces. Whilst I wouldn't say the movie was a total failure, it certainly wasn't on a par with the first Shrek movie which I watched a number of times and always enjoyed.

However, maybe this should be a lesson – a great movie doesn't always require a sequel. Sometimes just the memory of a great movie is enough . Sequels can have the uncanny ability to kill a movie which was once great.

Final Fantasy X-2 (2003 Video Game)
3/10
Not worthy of the title Final Fantasy
15 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Wow what a waste of time playing this game was. It is not worthy of the title Final Fantasy. Even my least favourite Final Fantasy game had some redeeming features, but this had NOTHING. The background music, which should have at least lent something to the atmosphere, was a type of inane and unmemorable synth-pop which just bubbled endlessly throughout most of the game; this immediately had me worried.

The character continuity it appears was not carried over from Final Fantasy 10. I mean, what the heck happened to Yuna? Yuna, the formerly serene, slightly naieve Summoner, seemed to have had a personality bypass and was replaced by a moronic cutesy hyper-kid you'd imagine would be into boys, cheer-leading, make-up, Spice Girls, pink fluffy things, and bubblegum – or in this case Spheres.

And whilst we're talking of character continuity the fact that Wakka and Lulu were having a baby together had me totally baffled. For one, he was her dead ex's brother. Two, there was never any real spark/connection between them in Final Fantasy 10 So hearing him say "Yah, I'm gonna be a daddy!" (or whatever dialogue it was he used), just made me go "Huh?!" It was almost as though someone just threw the idea in at the last minute. And the irony is that even though this 'couple' were having a baby together there was STILL no connection between them, they barely spoke to each other let alone anything else.

I felt that the plot from from Final Fantasy 10 wasn't carried over successfully and this resulted in a mess of ideas flung together to produce hours of disappointing gameplay.

The Leblanc syndicate 'villains' were an extremely irritating addition to the game; they were the kind of villain you'd expect to find in a wacky 'cartoon caper' and this just didn't fit the whole genre of Final Fantasy.

I found the gimmicky dress sphere/garment grid system childish – it reminded me of something you'd aim at girls into Bratz dolls – you just couldn't take it seriously.

For me FFX-2 was seriously flawed. I feel had this been a standalone game with 3 random female characters which had nothing to do with Final Fantasy, it could've been marketed at a genre who would've appreciated it more. However, to label it Final Fantasy 10-number-TWO and then turn into a Charlie's Angels venture was a big mistake, and left a number of die hard Final Fantasy fans feeling short-changed.

The Omen (1976)
8/10
Scary classic
11 August 2007
I first saw this movie on TV when I was 14. At the time I found it so disturbing I couldn't sleep for days! However, having now viewed this a number of times I think one of the key elements of this movie's success is the fantastic chilling soundtrack, which only enhances the feeling of suspense and evil which is a bubbling undercurrent throughout the film.

There is an edge of constant paranoia with a mix of inevitability throughout the movie. Although you know certain characters will come to a sticky end way before it happens you are kept in a certain amount of suspense (which will keep you on the edge of your seat) until it does.

This movie is a definite classic in my books, and even now, many years after my first viewing I still feel slightly edgy after watching it.

Shutter (II) (2004)

Thoroughly enjoyable!
5 August 2007
It's always refreshing when you watch a movie that you don't expect anything from and it turns out to be everything you could ask for. This was the case with Shutter.

The movie was creepy without the necessity of gore, it detailed relationships without being overly gratuitous, it offered suspense without the need for too much incidental music, provided mystery without becoming confusing, it was tear-jerking without the schmaltz, gave thrills with just the right amount of timing and twists which were surprising yet fell comfortably into the plot. Even the comedic moments were perfectly timed and excellent relief from a build-up of suspense.

It is also worth noting that the actors in this movie were superb! It is refreshing to watch a movie which ticks so many boxes.

Why oh why there has to be a remake I don't know. Now that it is being re-made Hollywood style I fear it will push this exceptionally original movie into total obscurity. I don't believe it can be bettered!

Ever felt short -changed?
5 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I only ever write a review on something if it was spectacularly awful or so mind-blowingly good it's out of this solar system. On this occasion, the former applies. I have just wasted a notable portion of my time watching this snooze-fest. I am hugely disappointed that this movie turned out to be nothing, in my opinion, than an episode of rhetoric mumbo jumbo.

I liken it to the a Kings New Clothes scenario - everyone else can see it's supposed finery but all I see is nothing - like a piece of artwork that everyone's been raving about; you feel you SHOULD like it but you just can't.

The movie was, at times, slightly confusing, clumsy, and erratic. Although the pace was swift, it was nonetheless an uninspiring journey through a difficult plot which was executed poorly.

The ending was long and drawn out; the best bit being when one of the Hugh Jackman characters (apologies for not remembering which one - they all merged into one after a while) sprouted fauna from his body - and that was only because the special effects were interesting.

This movie was a challenge to watch with little reward at the end.

Wendigo: Dull and pretentious
8 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is S-L-O-W. Spent most of the movie actually waiting for it to 'begin'.

The setting was bleak, the script was bleak, the cinematography was bleak, the plot was bleak, the budget was low (not that all low budget movies are bad, but this one had no redeeming features).

The plot was more consumed with a vengeful, slightly deranged hunter than the actual Wendigo which made a very brief appearance toward the end of the movie. This in itself was disappointing as this 'Wendigo' was just a bizarre mix of a tree and a stag. Everything about the movie was uninspiring.

The parents of the little boy appeared to be rather aloof and at times seemed completely detached from their son. Whether this was down to bad acting or a bad script I'm not sure, but it only heightened my disappointment and boredom levels.

There was no food for thought, nothing to pique an interest. With no real intrigue or chill factor, this movie creaked along so painfully, you just couldn't care less what happened by the end.

Wendigo's ambiance reminds me of the dull movie shown at the awards ceremony toward the end of 'Mr Bean's Holiday': a movie which is artistic and nonsensical, trying too hard to to be deep and meaningful, but coming across as pretentious and boring.

I would never want to watch this again. I only watched it to the end in the vain hope that something interesting might happen ... but it didn't.
