Redneck Zombies (1989 Video)
1/10
No pride.
17 February 2006
I accept that Redneck Zombies is bad, but it deliver an empty package of anticipation. There virtually no gore, no sex, no comedy. Zombies don't appear until the 56 minute mark of the 83 minute runtime. There is no imagination. I feel betrayed and angry.

It has nothing to justify its existence. It proved the difference between low budget and incompetence. The video-makers didn't even try to mask the awfulness, which I was expected, but not to such a boring extent. Sex, violence, trash: this is why we watch. For an example, the group finds a woman mutilated, the camera never shows the body. I don't want to sound like a moron, but I want to see the body. There was no gore, period.

I can handle bad acting, but the bad actors tried to be campy and that usually never works. I say, only a good actor can be campy in a film and make it work. I am a patient person, I can suck up an hour of stupidity, but this movie is too incompetent, even for Troma standards. I doubt Redneck Zombies is actually a Troma film, I bet they bought it dirt cheap from the makers, whom probably spent no more than three hundred dollars on the video-movie.

I only made it to the 1:05 minute mark. Maybe it livened up it the last 15 minutes. I doubt it. The movie is more than a waste: not so bad its good, just plain not funny and un-resourceful.

My Sassy Girl (2001)
3/10
Don't understand the overwhelming popularity.
13 February 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Contains Spoilers

I don't understand the overwhelming popularity of this movie. Maybe it's just me, but I found it overly sentimental and unfunny. I felt it to be no more sincere or dramatic than any contemporary American-made romantic comedy and pales in comparison to anything Capra or Cukor did. I find it ridiculous that My Sassy Girl has a rating that is 0.4 points higher than Mr. Deeds Goes to Town and a whole point higher than Born Yesterday.

My Sassy Girl had three endings and five climaxes. It's more of a personal preference, but I like movies to have one climax and one ending. This, like the last Lord of the Rings, kept going climax after climax. I like the feeling of closure, and when a resolution has been reached I get real annoyed when the actual finish is an hour away.

I didn't think the characters were developed properly. They just seem to act according to the demand of the script. They were ridiculous, cold and illogical in the first half and loving and sweet in the second. The two leads never have one meaningful conversation or seemed to be based on any degree of reality, which is the basis of any romantic film. All we get are generic humans who I could not care less about and action-movie vignettes. I want to know how everyone who loved this movie felt about Say Anything, Before Sunrise/Sunset and A Tale of Winter, movies that have real people falling in unsentimental love. I can't believe any fan of Eric Rohmer's would find this very dramatic or intelligent.

My Sassy Girl wasn't funny. The humor of this film was obnoxious. As a general rule, a man wearing high heels is never funny. Or, the eighth time a racquet ball hits a man in the head is equally unfunny. Also, when in the shower, why would any one answer the phone completely naked when there is a girl in the room? This is utterly stupid and illogical. Put on a towel or simply don't answer your phone.

I found it maddening that the film revealed that her boyfriend had died in the last 15 minutes of the movie. This is integral to understanding the girl's "character." I felt like I have been betrayed by the movie. To care about a character, I need to something about them. This film gives you nothing except the boy is an idiot and the girl is a jerk until an hour and a half has past.

Also, I don't understand why they parted. Was it because the father disapproved? If so, why would the very sassy, very independent and ultimately loving girl care about her father's disapproval? Maybe, it's the Korean culture but, nonetheless, that wasn't explained well.

I would like for those who loved the movie to rebut. Maybe it was just the right night for me to hate this movie.

Nightjohn (1996 TV Movie)
8/10
A engrossing film with solid characters.
26 September 2004
I found NightJohn's story and characters interesting. Actually, I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the film, I didn't think I was going to a Hallmark film, but I gave it an 8. I am usually attracted to tough, headstrong characters and John is definitely in that category. John, a slave, defied the master as well as convincing his fellow slaves of the importance of knowledge, in a world that relies on ignorance to survive. The little girl was also a strong, believable character, as was the rest of the cast.

Beau Bridges did a fine job as the cold-hearted plantation owner, as well as all the other actors in the film. Burnett did a great job presenting the story with a right amount of realism and sentimentality, where many films fail, making them too sappy.

I gave it an 8 out of 10. NightJohn reminded me of The Color Purple, it had a similar style and mood. I was engrossed by the film up until the conclusion where the film became a little too unbelievable. If you loved The Color Purple, I recommend NightJohn.
