Better than its (current) rating
6 April 2021
When I watched this, it had a score of 3.2 stars. Honestly, it's worth more than that.

The acting is not exactly great, although it does seem to get better as it goes through the film. The production values are pretty good (sound, score, camera work etc.. are all good) and any limitations do not get in the way of the story, but does show what can be achieved with a limited budget. The story is a bit predictable, but does have a couple of nice subtle twists.

Overall impression is that I do not regret watching it, but I doubt I would watch it again on my own volition.

Not as bad as some are saying....

Warning: Spoilers
Plotwise, the movie starts out slow and irrelevant. Given I had not seen the trailer, the sudden vanishing of people suddenly increased it's appeal. It got me all interested in some sort of survival based storey-line.... well I was disappointed.

The Christian inspired ending was even more disappointing. I'm not specifically religious and in this world where God does not step in and start answering prayers, it seems a bit of a cop-out. That only ending I like less is where "it was all a dream".

For acting, Cage was his usual expressive self. Thomson and Murray were quite fair.... but there was also the other cast members that felt almost as if they were not trying and just going through the motions.

Effects, scenes, sets and camera work were all reasonable.

Overall it's not a bad movie and does not deserve the slating it is getting - I have seen far, far worse ("Doomsday 2012"). It's not perfect and I will avoid watching it again, but I also do not regret seeing this movie once.

Not as disappointing as I expected it to be...

This movie was.... interesting. It was overall quite novel, but it suffered from a couple of draw backs.

The first is that while the alien female cast is definitely attractive (and I am not saying the human cast isn't), but it appears as if someone had instructed them to try and act seductively while playing a part and they just end up coming across like the actors in the crappy porn movies my flatmates used to find amusing. This is generally OK, but it really gets annoying in some places.

Also, if you were hoping for a "Species" or an "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", you will be a little disappointed. The storyline in most places is fairly obvious, although there are a couple of features which make it different enough to make the film not a complete waste of time.

Other than this, the special effects are certainly fair, the acting is decent (barring the notes above) and it's definitely watchable. It might not be a movie I would recommend to others as one to search out and watch, but if you have some time to kill or it's on TV there are a lot of other movies that are way worse than this.

2012: Doomsday (2008 Video)

Very much NOT recommended.

Warning: Spoilers
This is a bad movie.

It honestly has no redeeming features. I am disappointed that I have to give it a 1 - it does not deserve it.

It is badly written (the plot is patchy and suffers from missing links, the dialogue is absolutely horrendous), very badly acted (though they probably had a naff script to begin with), badly directed (although in all honesty he didn't have much to work with), has very poor effects and very tenuous links to reality (although this is almost always put down to "God's work").

The entirety of the movie seems to be based around a convoluted Mormon/Baptist Christian history and the path to finding faith with God acting through you as all the non-believers magically find faith by the end of this film.

Possibly the only people who would ever approve of this movie are those who wish to show their children movies based around Christian morals (put it this way, it quotes Mark's gospel at the end).

Seriously, if you are not an Evangelising Christian, this film will most likely annoy you or leave you in disbelief as to how anyone can make such a pile of rubbish.

If you are an Evangelising Christian, PLEASE do everyone else a favour and don't endorse this rubbish. There are better morally just films out there and your Children will be thankful that you didn't make them watch this rubbish.
