How do movies like this get made?
4 December 2023
And it stars Judd Nelson?? From Breakfast Club???

I have to assume this is some kind of money laundering scheme or something????

Acting, terrible. Music, terrible. Cinematography, terrible. Writing? Lol.

????

And this is only the second movie (out of a total of TWO) in nearly 20 years coming from this director, whose first movie also seems to be of questionable and odd quality?? (Which also happens to randomly star another huge celebrity, Kate Winslet???)

This mystery is infinitely more interesting than anything happening in this so-called "movie"

Please someone let me know wtf is happening.

The White Lotus meets The Strangers meets The Neon Demon meets Speak No Evil
20 February 2023
"The White Lotus" meets "The StrA.ngers" meets "The Neon Demon" meets "Speak No Evil" is a dI.sjointed and unsatisfyinG film that triEs to combiNe disparate elEments of hoRror, sAtire, and surrealism without a clear vision or purpose. The plot is convoluTed and confusing, with undEvelopeD characters and a lack of narrative coherence.

The film's visual style is the only redeeming quality, with striking visuals that evoke the neon-soaked aesthetic of "The Neon Demon," but they are more style over substance. The horror elements are shallow and predictable, failing to deliver any genuine sCares or suspense.

THe film's attempts to be profound or philosophicAl are pretenTious and forced, adding nothing to the story or the audience's experience.

Overall, "The White Lotus" meets "The StranGers" meets "The Neon Demon" meets "Speak No Evil" is a disaPpointment that fails to deliver on its promising premise. The film's lack of direction, poorly developed characters, and tedious pacing make it a forgettable and frustraTing viewing experience.

The Bear (2022– )
Bob's Burgers directed by Safdie Brothers
24 December 2022
The title of this review says it all. I don't have anything more to say and the following prompt is generated by AI to fit the six hundred character limit (which is ridiculous and netizens agree). Culinary drama series have become increasingly popular in recent years, with many viewers enjoying the blend of food, drama, and character development. One such series that stands out is a show that follows the lives and careers of top chefs as they navigate the cutthroat world of the restaurant industry. The show features stunning visuals, with beautiful shots of the food and locations. The performances by the cast are top-notch, with the chefs bringing a level of passion and authenticity to their roles. The storylines are engaging and often emotional, exploring the personal struggles and triumphs of the chefs as they strive to create culinary masterpieces. Overall, this culinary drama series is a must-watch for foodies and anyone looking for a unique and captivating viewing experience.

Troll (2022)
Norway's Godzilla/King Kong/Jurassic Park.
2 December 2022
Unfortunately, this rendition of Nordic folklore suffers from high production value with little substance.

Stylistically, looks like a blatant copycat of a lot of Hollywood blockbuster films from cinematography to plot devices/formulas - even including the same type of "I'm trying to be clever" quips and quotes a la Disney/Marvel movies.

However, severely lacking in substance and character development - deterred further by plenty of microaggressive "jokes"/moments.

The only likeable character for me was the father and he was barely tolerable - loved it when he started doing the same "hand's up" gesture in front of the creature as Chris Pratt does in the Jurassic Park movies (iykyk).

The troll backstory with the Christianization of Norway seemed to just be thrown in in an attempt to add some kind of interesting (and authentic) plot elements, but it didn't go anywhere.

Trollhunter (2010) is a far superior "troll" movie.

The 100% Critic score and 56% Audience score (as of this review) on Rotten Tomatoes is hilarious.

Cashgrab? I can see Norwegian families flocking to the theaters because it's cultural and looks like a "fun movie" (at least, that's what the producers desperately hope for). Almost feels exploitative.

'Troll' review for 'Troll' movie :3.

Harry Potter meets Addams Family

Warning: Spoilers
Glad to see I'm not the only one that's seeing this.

Normies? Muggles? Um, what?

The headscarf with snake underneath?

That rowing competition?

The statue that leads into a tomb?

The shapeshifters, the werewolves... I mean, if there is a season 2, will they reveal Cousin Itt to be an Afghan Hound?

Also, + Twilight +Chilling Adventures of Sabrina + that classic Simpsons episode where Lisa uncovers the truth about Jebediah Springfield

Catherine Zeta Jones was a mid casting choice as Morticia. Also, it bothered me how they made Morticia some kind of preppy soccer helicopter mom that's trying to manipulate Wednesday.

Jenna Ortega tried her best in the title role. But I found myself cringing a bit too much - but that was mostly the writing so can't really blame her for that, except that dance at the prom - 60's Wednesday knows how to break it down (iykyk).

Tbh, I'm shocked that this show is being accepted so well.

Shows/stories like this remind me of going to church where pastors preach the same stories/rules to a congregation that just laps it up.

I found myself saying "Wednesday wouldn't react like this" so many times.

Scream meets Euphoria meets SNL skit.
2 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Gratuitous sex/make-out scenes, hyped up drug use, "cute" ending (and it probably thinks it's cute).

Odd placement of Lee Pace's character. The character should've played up the hippy dippy, artsy fartsy trait - Pace's character just comes across as a drugged out old man dating a teenager. Maybe that's exactly what he was; and all that he was, but in this political climate - that was a choice. On top of that, his death scene felt very arbitrary (but frankly, so did all the others).

Davidson was "OK" - I mean, he's SUPPOSED to be annoying and unlikeable, right? But in a funny way?

Sternberg carries the movie, until the end.

What else...

Surprised A24 greenlit this - I expect stuff like this from Netflix - maybe A24 thought this would be an easy cash-grab, but one that's still trying to be clever (cleverer than the rest), idk - it could've been better, it could've gone darker, played deeper with the satirizing of the Gen-Z stereotypes.

The more I think about the it, the worse it gets.

Sincerely, A millennial.

"10 out of 10" - Gen Z.

"7 out of 10" - Millennials.

"5 out of 10" - Gen X.

"Why are they acting this way? What is this? Out of 10" - Boomers.

"Why are they acting this way? What is this I'm twelve? (& too young to be watching this) out of 10" - Gen Alpha.

Monster (2022–2024)
Joe Pera murders gay people
2 October 2022
I just can't get over how much Peters sounds like Pera in this. Sorry.

The show is okay. I can see why some people are saying that it's exploitative, but unfortunately a lot of things that show business does is exactly that.

Other things that bothered me - the father and mother were way too animated. Also, they could give Evan Peters weird yellow contacts, but remiss on one of the particular well-known traits of Jeffrey Dahmer? That trait being him having blue eyes - and blonde hair too, but the latter was mentioned on the show - which actually raises my suspicion all the more. Idk, it bothered me - it feels like some kind of clandestine protection for blue eyes - especially with all the details that they try to cover; on top of Evan Peters being known for his deep brown eyes; I can only hope I'm being too sensitive.

Speak No Evil (2022)
What is the opposite of catharsis?
27 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Pent up rage?

A lot of reviews stating "why don't they fight back?"/"frustrating to watch" but isn't that exactly the point the movie was trying to get across?

Speaking generally, in Scandinavian culture, there seems to be this overbearing culture of politeness and "not being loud" - on top of being nestled in their sheltered and comfortable lifestyles (quite similar to Japanese culture - I mean, imo, you could swap out the couple here with a Japanese couple and the story could play out exactly the same).

Having said that, though, some things were just garishly frustrating - like driving back to the house for the stuffed animal and the overall blatant ignorance of red flags. But I guess we all make the wrong choices sometimes and ignore red flags in certain situations/people. However, what really bothered me (and the last straw) was when Bjørn drove off the road in an attempt to try and lose the trailing car/Patrick.

This movie comes across more like a highly dramatized Public Service Announcement. As I mentioned in the title, there is no catharsis to the story, just pent up rage and frustration - the story could've been built up better/cleaner, but it is semi-successful in its own brutal and frustrating way.

It's all a little bit transparent.

PSA To the 1 star reviewers: Fight the narrative, not the people/victims. To the 10 star reviewers: Question the narrative.

A comedic gift to humanity. Everyone needs love and a creative outlet
28 May 2019
Top comedy of all time.

Defines this generation.

Been a fan of Chris Lilley's since Summer Heights High.

The satirical comedy is similar to Trey Parker's (would be amazing to see Lilley and Parker collab on a project). Some people get it, some people don't.

Really hope there's a season 2, but the one season so far is a gift to humanity in itself.

Thank you Chris Lilley for your genius work.

With all the jobs being replaced and the world shifting into robotics and AI, us humans need a way to survive. Love and creativity is the answer.

Excellent war themed horror movie.
31 December 2016
It's hard to put politics aside with a movie like this. I've always heard that Iran was an "interesting place." I've been told that they were very "modern" up until the 70s.

It showed me a side of the Middle East that the western audience rarely see; not only being a victim of the war, but the hatred and aversion for it.

This movie takes the subject of the war and the naturally occurring horror and dread one would feel in the midst of a war-torn country and engages that into a chilling story. It doesn't feel exploitative; it feels more like a message.

Eerie and creepy with a very subdued atmosphere, but still with a sense of urgency.

The Wailing (2016)
One hell of a ride
1 October 2016
About 40 minutes into the movie, I stopped to look at how much time was left and was actually RELIEVED to see that there was still so much left. That's how engaging and interesting the story was for me.

Before watching the movie I read one review on here that said it was a "smorgasbord" of genres (it was a positive review), but it doesn't really feel like it. I mean, yes, I can see it, but the storytelling is so fluid and well written that the multiple genre aspects didn't feel out of place at all. It works. It works so well that I almost feel like it's redundant to point out that there are "so many genres."

I found the second half of this movie quite similar to The Witch. Not necessarily in terms of the storyline, but the pace, the severity, the terror. Both movies are quite psychological. But The Wailing delivers somewhat of a more complex storyline.

Cinematography was breathtaking. Jun Kunimura was ridiculous (in a good way). All the actors were on point. I'm not going to point out or mention "Asian horror" here (although, technically I just did I guess, lol). I just don't think that it's necessary to pigeonhole this movie into anything other than what it is; a great horror.

"The worst movie I've ever seen"
20 September 2016
I'm sitting in the theater, the movie just ended, I am in shock and awe (amongst many other emotions).

There were maybe 5 groups of 2-3 people in the theater. They all immediately get up to leave as soon as the credits start rolling and I hear one of the groups say "this is the worst movie I've ever seen" and another group goes "what the f--- was that, can we get our money back? *insert obnoxious laughter*" At first, these sentiments made me feel a little bad because I enjoyed the movie so much, but they probably expected something else. The language, the slow pace - makes it hard to follow - and what horror elements that we do see is completely bizarre.

To me, everything about this movie is just perfection. There's nothing I could say to appreciate the hard work that went into this movie and the imagination. The plot/storyline, the acting, the directing. It's all so unbelievable.

Makes me very eager to see what Robert Eggers has in store for the future.

Maya & Marty (2016)
"Absolutely" loved it. Hope there will be more seasons to come.
28 July 2016
I'm a big fan of Maya Rudolph, but I didn't particularly enjoy her first attempt at doing a variety show ("The Maya Rudolph Show"), but Martin Short brings a unique freshness within the collaboration. I'm a millennial so I have heard of Martin Short before, but never really knew who he was, but I absolutely fell in love with him (particularly his character Jiminy Glick). The comedy is definitely modern and seems like it's for a niche market (hence the split in reviews).

I really hope NBC renews this show for a couple more seasons. The ratings seem to be on par with SNL so I don't know why they wouldn't?

I can't get enough of Jiminy Glick!

One of the better Asian horror flicks in recent times
27 October 2014
I wonder if Asian horror will ever make a comeback? This movie wouldn't be the start of it, but it was rather enjoyable to watch. I haven't really enjoyed an Asian horror movie for... years it seems?

The story is solid and rather intelligently written, but I feel like the delivery wasn't very effective. The acting was good, I guess it could be a bit awkward for the average Western person who is not accustomed to Japanese movies. Overall, it just feels like something is missing. I didn't feel a creepy atmosphere or anything. They could've taken the psychological thriller aspect and ran with it, with the addition of more creepy elements, but it sorta fails to deliver.

I could see a Hollywood remake happening as I watched it, which in this case, could actually go very well.

It was actually pretty good? Lol.
27 October 2014
The 4.6 rating seems a bit low, but this movie isn't a masterpiece. Actually it's pretty far from being a masterpiece, lol. The acting was really awkward at certain points and some of the material is really questionable, but that f***ing clown is freaky as hell. And I'm not one of those types that are "afraid of clowns." But... the awkwardness of it all actually sort of enhanced the feeling of creepiness, in a weird way?

Also, how they linked and wrapped up the story was really clever. It didn't help that something crashed outside my window when the movie was over.

I usually don't watch movies below a 6.0 rating and I would never watch a movie below 5.0 (yes, I'm that type of person), but I was bored and I thought the clown looked scary so I gave this movie a try. Really glad that I did.

Housebound (2014)
Fun times.
27 October 2014
At first I was really skeptical about this movie due to the "comedy" genre. Usually I'm not much of a horror/comedy fan (being a big fan of "pure" horror movies). I gave this movie a try due to the positive ratings and I was not disappointed. And for anyone that is wondering... it definitely has horror elements.

The mysterious story was really great and the acting was on point. None of the characters were annoying (I find a lot of character in horror/comedy movies rather annoying). I was pleasantly surprised that the comedy was more of a dark comedy rather than toilet comedy, but I really didn't know what to expect.

Great horror flick about a real, sad, scary disease
27 October 2014
One of the better horror movies from the last few years. The "horror" genre tag was missing from the IMDb page when I first looked it up (right before I saw it) so I really didn't know what I was getting into - although it was pretty obvious that it would be a horror flick due to the cover picture, but you never know.

The story was well written. It was very clever how they incorporated Alzheimer's disease into the story - well, they didn't "incorporate" it - the disease is the main story, but it was very clever how they made it into a horror movie - the disease is very scary in and of itself.

I have to admit that the acting was a bit iffy, but it became negligible toward the middle of the movie due to the intensity of the story. And Jill Larson gave a stellar performance.

The Den (2013)
Great modern horror. Not good for my cyber-paranoia.
11 July 2014
This movie is very fresh and modern. I've never seen a horror movie done like this before (webcam style). I honestly don't understand all the negative reviews here. This movie was very fun to watch, made me jump a few times, and the story unwound perfectly. Don't be asking yourself "why is she filming this" - that totally defeats the purpose of storytelling. I feel like too many people might be going into this movie with high expectations? Sure there are some logical errors, but what horror movie is completely devoid of those?

Actually, don't take my review into consideration. Only consider all the other negative reviews and just give this movie a try. Then perhaps you'll like it a bit more.

I feel like the build up was great, the storytelling was fresh, and the ending was clever. The overall plot and ending might be a bit too sick and twisted for some (probably not for the average horror movie goer), but this is actually real life. There are some sick people out there and I feel like this movie made a great commentary about it.

Devil's Pass (2013)
More found footage horror movies, but this one was good.
5 July 2014
It seems like half of the horror films I've seen in recent years are found footage/mockumentary (not that I'm complaining, I quite like found footage movies). I just found myself thinking to myself "oh, this is a found footage movie?" at the beginning.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Even though there was really nothing happening for the first half of the movie, something just grabbed my attention and didn't let go. I think it was because of the cinematography and the acting was quite well done as well. None of the characters were too annoying or outwardly illogical.

The ending... So many horror movies are desperate for that big ending or a huge twist and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I was very judgmental at first when I realized where the story was progressing, but the very end (sort of) saved it, at least for me.

Final Prayer (2013)
Decent found footage horror film, many similarities to other existing horrors.
3 July 2014
Being a horror movie buff I had to jump on this the second I found out about it. While watching it I found many similarities to previous horror movies that I've seen: (1)Noroi (2)Session 9 and (3)The Descent (all three being some of my most favorite horror flicks of all time), but this movie 'sort of' fails to deliver a decisive punch. I say 'sort of' because it was quite entertaining and creepy at points, but the ending slightly failed to deliver. It wasn't a bad or good ending, in my opinion, but at the same time it was also kind of comical. I feel like there should have been five or so additional minutes at the end; not necessarily to "finish the ending" or "wrap up the story in a nice little package," but to just give it a chance to develop the creepiness. All-in-all, it was a good horror movie, maybe my expectations were a bit high is all.

The Pact (II) (2012)
Highly underrated, should be at least 6.5 rating.
22 January 2013
Okay, sure, it's not a groundbreaking horror film (what is nowadays?), but I found myself enjoying it. I usually don't watch films below a 6.0 IMDb rating (yeah, yeah, I'm a ratings wh***, shut up). But I was really in the mood for a horror movie and decided to give this a try. Yeah, it's a traditional story and somewhat predictable, but the modern "offbeat" characters kept it interesting. I agree with the user that says it starts off a bit weak/slow, but the rest of the story kept me intrigued. I've seen (modern) horror movies that are far worse than this that have higher ratings so give it a try if you enjoy modern horror.

Noroi (2005)
Seems like you either love this movie or you hate it.
8 May 2009
I, for one, absolutely loved this movie. A progressive and experimental approach to horror.

It is not a "typical Asian horror" where you would see a gruesome looking ghost (usually a woman) that is going around scaring people. You barely see any ghosts for a majority of the film, but the way this movie keeps you interested in the plot and characters is genius.

This is not the movie for you if you're into gore or jumpscares, but this movie has an underlying "creepy" factor throughout the entire movie which I loved.

Don't let the documentary-style of filming turn you off (why should it?). It is on par, if not superior, to the Blair Witch Project - it really feels like you're watching something that you're not supposed to be seeing.
