Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
Not Bad, but fails to deliver like the others
Harrison Ford returns as Indy in this newest sequel and he is none the worse for wear, but the problem is the movie just somehow disappoints. I went to the theater with four other people and we all agreed something was missing. Maybe it was the slow and tedious storyline. It just did not have the punch I was expecting.
Harrison Ford looked and acted fine in the film but it was just so very slow. I agree with many others that the script is at fault. Ford was still quite capable of delivering his usual performance but one can only do so much with an inferior script.
The pointless storyline concerning his son took away from the film rather than adding to it. The guy from "Disturbia" who played his son has been compared to Marlon Brando, but he is definitely no Brando in any shape, form or fashion.
The stupid and irritating "crotch hitting" scene involving the son has been done so many times in movies that it is getting pathetic. When, oh when, can we have a movie without someone getting hit or kicked in the crotch? This was cheap and took away from the film.
A good point is the return of Karen Allen in the film, and she was perky as always and looking like it was only yesterday that she made the first film. She should have been used a lot more in this film because her presence was a big help. She just simply was not used enough.
The film seemed to "apologize" for the age of the main players even though they are far from old. When is Hollywood ever going to stop thinking that older players have to be apologized for? They can hold their own and did with what script they had to work with.
Anyway, I only tried to fall asleep a couple of times during the movie but for the most part it held my attention although I was not satisfied. All in all the whole thing was too slow, not up to par and did not use the title music we all love nearly enough! What was up with that? It seemed like the makers were afraid to use the music, however they were not afraid to use silly, stupid stuff like the customary, tired old crotch hitting scenes.
United 93 (2006)
Good movie...but
OK, yes this movie is good and does capture the agonizing horror of what happened. But...there are some problems with this film that really hurt the overall effect in my opinion.
First of all is the terrible, amateurish camera work. I had a really serious headache after watching the shaking, unsteady camera in this movie. Not since "The Blair Witch Project" has anything been so poorly filmed.
And then there is the endless talk, talk, talk in the control rooms that appeared to be amateurs trying to act. This may have indeed showed how confusing the whole situation was but it was not good film making. If this movie had been filmed with a steady camera (and maybe not just one) the effect would have been much more dramatic and devastating. This is not to say that this was not powerful; many moments actually where horrific and brutally presented how terrible this tragedy was.
The movie does a great job of showing how inept the government was, and the military to allow anything like this to happen and it does make a person wonder...just what was going on??? What was going on? One can get the feeling from the way this is presented that maybe the government did know what was going on and even let this happen? I am not the only one of several people who viewed this with me that got the same feeling.
There is no doubt at all that those passengers were true heroes if there ever were any, and I am not trying to minimize that at all by criticizing this film. The absolute fact is the way this was filmed was very hard on the eyes. I felt like I was in a rowboat on a storm tossed sea with all the jerky, unstable camera work, and that along with the endless control room chatter made this a not so good experience for me, because I felt like I was watching a news show and not a movie at all. Powerful, but could have benefited so much more with some good camera work, better acting (for some), and some major stars thrown in.
Abominable (2006)
One of the best in a long time!
Oh wow! I loved this movie! It has been a long time since I jumped or yelled watching a movie but this riveting, terrific flick really did it. From now on I am definitely a Ryan Schifrin fan! This young guy knows what he is doing and how to make an action packed movie that is never boring but full of tension and scary too.
The acting is superb, and the special effects are really, truly special, without using much (if any) computer effects. There is some delightful gore here for sure! The monster is absolutely gruesome looking and realistic to the ninth degree. It sure looks superior to so many of those unrealistic computer creatures that look so phony. The director (Ryan Schifrin), gets my vote for the most promising director to come along in ages. I believe he wrote this too (how much talent can one guy have}? Ryan sure knows what the public wants and he certainly knows how to give it to us!!!
The whole movie was expertly filmed, great camera work here which adds to the total effect tremendously. A very good story, interesting characters and although there is brief nudity there is no pointless sex scenes thrown in to cover up for a bad story. The whole thing is refreshing, fun, scary and just plain downright great!
I can't praise this enough, and I want to thank everyone connected with this film for giving the public something really worthwhile for a change. Guys, you put excitement and quality back into monster flicks, and everyone connected with this deserves credit for a job very well done!
I am definitely going to be owning this little gem, and I will be looking for the next flick from this director. One last thing...get the cameras rolling and get the sequel going!!!
The Fog (2005)
One of the worst films of all time!
I had some expectations that this movie might be an improvement over the original not-so-good film, but was I wrong! This movie is terrible and a perfect example of how not to make a remake. The acting was pathetic. The atmosphere was destroyed by the amateur acting "talents" of the principal players. The guy who played Nick (Tom Wellington from Smallville) is surely one of the worst actors in movies today. He is completely unbelievable in this part. He thinks he is so cool and I guess that gets in the way of any attempt at acting he might be able to try. He doesn't even look good either, despite the heavy layers of make-up, the gobs of mascara, and the colored contacts. He is looking too old to try to play a "pretty boy" any longer and it shows too! He goes around never getting very emotional or excited about anything (I guess he is afraid he will mess up his make-up). One thing is certain and that is he was very miscast in this part (it ruined the whole movie). He would have been perfect for one of the gay cowboys in Brokeback Mountain, because he acts and looks so very, very gay.
The original movie was frustrating and this one is more so. There is not much of a plot to be found, no frights at all, and a completely asinine story. The whole thing is just pathetic and really boring and I do mean boring! I can't believe that John Carpenter had his name in the credits! He should have given up after his first attempt with The Fog. The most frightening thing about the first film was Jamie Lee Curtis doing a topless scene revealing her mosquito bites, and the most frightening thing about this travesty was that some idiot made it in the first place. It does not even deserve to be watched unless one is desperate and even then one will be very disappointed! Avoid this disaster at all costs and it flat out gets no stars at all because it is a bomb of the greatest magnitude! I had to give it one but that was because there was no other choice!!!
Mystic River (2003)
GOOD MOVIE FOR SURE!
This movie, directed by Clint Eastwood won two Academy Awards (Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor). It deserved both of them because it is a good movie. The movie is around 2 hours and 18 minutes and is a bit too long. The ending was too long and should have been wrapped up sooner which would make it more dramatic perhaps. Still, I was not bored with the movie and it kept you guessing until nearly the end about who did what.
All of the performances are very good, in fact excellent. Sean Penn was superb, as was Tim Robbins. Clint Eastwood did an excellent job of directing, and it shows.
Some things are kind of left unanswered, and I thought it hurt the overall effect, but still emerged as a really good drama. I would give it an 8 out of the ten possible votes. A good movie if you like gritty, dramatic movies.
My Dog Skip (2000)
FANTASTIC!!!
Ever so often, a really EXCELLENT movie comes along that rises above everything, and this movie is IT!!! I can't even praise this movie high enough, it is that good! This is a wonderful movie, full of redeeming social value.
This movie is an excellent tearjerker and is suitable for everyone to view.
I think most any kid would really love this movie. It is superb in every department, excellent acting, expertly filmed, very touching and powerful too. I can guarantee one thing and that is if you rent this (if you like this kind of movie) you will not be disappointed. It will tug at your heart and make you feel good. When was the last time a movie was able to make a person feel that way? This is one great film and everyone connected with it should be proud!!! Who says that don't make them like they used to? This film is a delight and rates a big 10!!!!
She Done Him Wrong (1933)
She Done EVERYTHING RIGHT!
Well here it is
legendary blonde-bombshell Mae West's smash hit screen version of her smash hit stage play Diamond Lil! It is a fine film to be sure. This movie has been selected by the American Film Institute as one of the best black and white movies of all time (it has also been recognized by other organizations like-wise).
Mae is fantastic in this comedy/drama about the escapades of 'Lady Lou.' This movie was a HUGE success and saved Paramount Pictures from bankruptcy when it was released because it made so much money. It was also nominated for an Academy Award.
The movie features Cary Grant (this is the film that made him a star) and there is magic in the air when Grant and West get together. It is full of legendary Mae West one-liners. When Mae tells Cary to 'come up' and see her sometime there is electricity in the air!! Mae drips with diamonds, funny sayings (that have since became history), fabulous gowns and amusing situations.
Of course this movie is in black and white, which may make it less desirable to some people. I was a bit surprised by some of the comments here, considering the legendary, classic status of this film. It is in every way one of the ALL TIME film classics, and should be viewed as such. This is not just my opinion; it is considered one of the true classics of all time. I would definitely recommend it, as do MANY organizations! It is a wonderful showcase for one of the greatest stars of all time.
The Fanglys (2004)
ROTTEN WORTHLESS "MOVIE"
This is one of the most stupid and worthless movies ever. It really does not qualify for movie status. It is VERY cheap (apparently shot on videotape), horribly acted, and just plain rotten. I could not believe how cheap and inept this piece of crap was. It looked like a home video! I mean I believe a guy I know a few houses down must have dug out his video camera and made this crap in 2 or 3 hours. It is that bad. I noticed the name from whence this came
Asylum
and I will NEVER rent anything with that name on it again!!! When you rent a flick, check to see if it is from this "company." One thing is true though--if you like horribly acted, amateur movies, then you might like this loser. It is absolutely boring and terrible!!! You have been warned!!!
Creature Unknown (2004)
UNKNOWN MOVIE is more like it!!!
Creature Unknown is the right word for this movie. Or maybe it should be called Unknown Movie. This movie is a piece of crap right from the beginning. It has a really stupid "plot," really pathetic "acting," and so-so "special effects."
Some thirty-something year old "post-teens" are trapped in the woods with a mad, reptilian, rubber-suit creature lurking around endlessly. What you get with this movie is a bunch of talk and precious little action. You have girls walking through the woods talking, and then you have guys (with heavy mascara on) walking through the woods talking. The whole thing is so boring!
The creature itself is rarely seen throughout most of the movie. When it is shown the picture is distorted to mask the fact that it is a man in a rubber suit, and the movement shows that it is a suit, hence the reason for the blurring and distortion of the image.
This is NOT a good movie in ANY since of the word and the ones here who have praised it are most likely the people that were picked up off the street to "act" in this truly stupefying movie! Skip this one for certain!
Sextette (1977)
MAE WEST--STILL THE GREATEST STAR!!!
I am so sick and tired of age-prejudiced so called "critics" attacking this film because of the LEGENDARY SEX QUEEN Mae West's age in this film!!! The fact is, this movie packs quite a punch!!! Mae West is not playing a twenty-something year old as the "critics" like to say. The movie makes it plain that she was playing a legendary Hollywood Movie Queen from Hollywood's Golden Age, and the GREAT star Mae does NOT fail to deliver. This movie has been treated so UNFAIRLY it is pathetic. The only thing that is pathetic about this movie is the critics who have dared to criticize this fine film. Miss Mae West is so fan-bloody-fantastic in this film that she wipes everyone else out in it as Ringo Starr himself said about this film. She STILL is GREAT..she STILL is WONDERFUL..she still LOOKS FANTASTIC!!! She was and still remains the GREATEST STAR in the HISTORY OF HOLLYWOOD!!! This film is a very funny, campy flick (just as Mae intended) and Miss West delivers!!! She is STILL the GREATEST sex symbol that Hollywood has EVER produced in this flick, and she delivers EVERY step of the way!!! When Timothy Dalton says he is British and must keep a "stiff upper lip," the GREAT Mae (with PERFECT timing) stares at him, gives him the Mae West look-over, stares at his crotch, and says...."well, you gotta start somewhere,' and believe me there is electricity in the air!!! This is fun stuff here for ALL Mae West fans. If you are not a fan..TOO BAD!!! If you are an age-prejudiced critic (like those who have attacked this film) then the only sympathy that should be felt is for someone who is as in-human as you!!! It is a sad day in the USA when pathetic people attack a GREAT star because (and ONLY because) of their age. NO STAR in the HISTORY of Hollywood delivers like the legendary Empress of Sex like Mae West!!! Listen fans...this film of Mae is fun and you will not be disappointed unless you have some kind of perverted age-prejudice like some of these critics. The only thing that is SAD about this film is the very UNFAIR comments from some so called "people" who attack a human being because of their age!!! Critics attacked the GREAT Mae from the day she hit Hollywood but the fans CHEERED her on!!!! She saved Paramount from bankruptcy, and gyrated them up into the BLACK!!! Paramount did NOT make this film (like the one "critic" here said). That was totally untrue. This was an independent film from the beginning that was ONLY FILMED at Paramount Studios. Paramount had NOTHING to do with this. It was just filmed there, and it was NOT put on the shelf because Paramount was embarrassed by it. That is a bunch of crap. It was an independent film and the fact is that it has done very WELL indeed through its release on pay-cable (from such illustrious sources as the Movie Channel--which HIGHLY recommended it), and it has been released twice already on tape (VHS) and already one time on DVD!!! The ONLY people who have attacked this film have been those who are so age-prejudiced that they cannot see the forest for the trees. It's fun, ENTERTAINING, and despite her age, Mae consistently delivers and NEVER disappoints her true fans in this very UNDERRATED flick!!! I own this film on VHS and DVD and NEVER fail to enjoy watching it and EVERY single person I have shown it too, has commented about how GREAT Mae West STILL was when she made this flick!!! Hooray for Mae West and HOORAY for SEXTETTE, because believe me...Goodness still had NOTHING to do with it and it's STILL GREAT FUN to "Come up and see" Mae sometime in this nifty little, sexy flick!!! NOBODY...BUT NOBODY...CAN TOP THE LEGENDARY SEX QUEEN MAE WEST!!! HIGHLY recommended to Mae's TRUE fans..and if you are not, the go JUMP IN THE LAKE!!! You are ONLY JEALOUS!!!! Go WEST young man...Miss MAE WEST
Halloween: Resurrection (2002)
Should have called this, "Screw Up the Halloween Series Project."
Boy, was I scared when I watched this "movie"! Yeah.scared that I would have to sit through the entire.uh, "film." Well since I was watching it with two others I did have to sit through it, although I had to tape my eyelids open with duck tape and have myself tied to the chair to do it.
Michael Myers is submerged by this terrible, stinking entry in this series. I really like the Halloween series, but this one should have never been made the way it was made. The acting is absolutely horrible, the filming is atrocious, and the entertainment value is non-existent.
Jamie Lee Curtis is featured in the very beginning, but is only in the film for a very short time(lucky for her), and after this the title comes up. Then it is nothing but downhill all the way to rock bottom.
A group of "young" people (it must be tough being a 35 year old teen-ager) is stuck in the old Myers' house doing something. One can never be sure just what they are supposed to be doing except perhaps showing how they cannot act. ALL of these characters are very unlikable, two-dimensional parodies of human beings. One never gets involved with any of them because there is no character development what so ever and no plot to boot! The most obnoxious of the characters is the black guy with the long hair extensions, whose favorite word is, "motherfu@#a," and he mouths it through huge lips (that seemed to have been over-inflated with collagen injections) through the whole mish-mash.
This movie is NOT scary at all, has no tension, no excitement, and ALL the special effects are ruined by the constant (very irritating) injections of the "view" through the characters mini-cams they have attached to their heads (or whatever).
What were the makers of this film thinking when they made this piece of crap? I would like to know that, because it seems like they must have been on "crack," or maybe sitting on their cracks when they put this drivel together. Man, it just plain sucks! It is no wonder that this films release was delayed so long, went through so many name changes (this always happens when the makers know they have a loser), and finally emerged only to be stillborn at the box-office.
Maybe if they make another one of these movies for the "Halloween" series, the makers will pick some plain, regular people off the street to star in it, because there is no doubt ANYONE chosen off the street would be better at acting than the..uh."actors" who appear in this bomb. The absolute BEST part of this entire movie was when I was rewinding the tape!!!
