Doctor Who (2005)
Thank you BBC for getting rid of Jody Whittaker
Finally the "Beeb" has listened to their viewers. Now that Jody Whittaker is gone and David Tennant is back, I suspect the ratings will greatly increase. I hope the BBC has learned their lesson. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". The talk of the town is many many people all over the world is celebrating the exit of Jody and the return of David. Myself, I could not sit and watch any of the episodes of series 10 through 13. Bad acting and bad writing plagued the Doctor Who franchise since Chris Chibnall took over production. Doctor Who fans don't want to be preached at with social justice ideals nor preached at with political correctness. We just want to escape our lives for an hour and be taken away to a place where everything will be fixed in 45 minutes.
Dune (2021)
Such a great disappointment.
First off, this movie is being done in two part from what I see. So I can only comment on this first part. Frank Herbert and the Dune is not for beginners, whether novels or movies. Dune is best known for the inner monologues of the characters over stepping on what is actually said. Often times, readers have to re read pages to make sure they understand what is being said compared to what is being thought. This is a hard concept to convey in cinema. There are lines in the movie that come from the novel, but not enough. To much original dialogue has been replaced with made up movie dialogue. There are some stunning desert scenes that are wonderful, but it just not enough to carry the film. The film fails when it comes to story, script and actors. Too much of the book has been removed and replaced. The main characters are lackluster and often do things without meaning? I think the only people who will really understand this movie are the ones that have read the book. Everyone else who has only seen this movie will consider it very flat and two dimensional with un-evolved characters. The casting wasn't right. The original Dune film did a much better job at casting and telling the story. What hurt the original film was lack of modern CGI and FX. I am so glad I did not spend the money to see this at the theater. The only actor casted correctly is Jason Momoa. Even with that, Momoa should have toned it down a bit for this part. Nothing really works for this film. Bad casting, bad writing and too much of a difference from the novel. For me, this film goes in the "I've binged watch every else three times already and this is my last option." I'll wait for part two to be broadcast on network T. V. to see it. Such a disappointment and let down.
Lexx (1996)
Made for people who don't want to think very much
I missed the first run of this show back in the late '90s, and I'm glad I did. Those review's that states Lexx was a well written show do not understand what a well written show is and what writing elements are required to be considered a well written show. Just because someone likes a movie/show doesn't mean it was well written. There are episodes of Popeye cartoons from the1930's through the 1960's that are better written than every episode of Lexx. I had to force myself to watch the entire 4 seasons. If you never seen or heard of Lexx before, let me tell you this. Lexx is a low budget mix-up of Farscape, Red Dwarf and Rocky Horror Picture Show with stereotypical German sexual fetishes and perversions that suffer from bad acting, bad writing, poor production values and cheap special effects. I'm not a Babylon 5 fan by any means, however, the worst Babylon 5 episode's are far better than the best Lexx episode's. The show is a coproduction of Canada and Germany. The show was originally aired in both countries but really meant for a German audience. The show relies on both Canadian and German actors and produced in both countries. The original "first" season was actually a 4 part mini series each an hour and a half long that was picked up for a series. There is a definite production difference between the "first" season and the remaining 3 seasons. Most notably the overall look of the episodes and some minor topless nudity only in one of the "first" seasons episode. Watching Lexx is definitely a required taste not suitable for young children. There really isn't much content to the writing. My overall impression is that there was a contract for a number of episodes to be written and something had to be turned in before the deadline. The actor's performance's are a direct reflection of their pay, poor and not much of it. If you decide to watch Lexx, don't have much expectations for it because it will only disappoint. I really had to struggle to make myself watch the whole series. I found myself fast forwarding through most of each episodes only paying attention to the beginning, middle and end of those episodes. Compared to seasons 1 and 2, season 3 does pick up a little bit. The writing is somewhat improved and the stereotypical German sexual perversions and fetishes aspect of the show calms down as well. I believe it was after season 2 that Lexx was picked up for broadcasting in the United States hence the dramatic reduction of showing on screen sexual fetishes for season 3 and 4. It is apparent that season 3 and 4 are a complete ripoff of what Farscape had done at that same time. The production company was desperate for higher ratings for the American television market.
Andromeda: And Your Heart Will Fly Away (2002)
Very Doctor "Who-ish"
This is definitely not the best written episode of season 3 or the whole series for that matter. The writer(s) seems to have gotten lazy and stole the character concept of Davros from the Doctor Who franchise for the episode character Bartolome Naz.
This is a mediocre episode at best.
The New Mutants (2020)
Great disappointment
This movie is a disappointment all the way around. The writing has obvious sociopolitical undertones. The acting isn't believable. The story arch is extremely predictable. I am confused as to the genera of the film. Is it an action adventure film? Is it a horror movie? Did the people making this movie just give up after a couple day in to the production of it? Thankfully I didn't spend (loose) money for a movie ticket. Those people who have read The New Mutants comics will still find this movie difficult to sit through. Bad acting, bad story, bad direction and bad production values plague this movie from start to finish.
Under the Skin (2013)
Copy cat director and film styling
This movie is a blatant unashamed wannabe copy of a Stanly Kubrick movie circa 1964-1980. The movie itself is ok. It is full of plot holes that scream at you from start to finish. If you really liked A Clockwork Orange, or 2001: A Space Odyssey, or Dr Strangelove, my guess is you will like this too if you ignore all the plot holes that pop up about every 5 minutes or so. This is a slow moving film with very little dialogue. You get to hear Scarlett Johansson trying out a feeble proper English accent while in Scotland. Good thing there isn't much dialog in the movie.
For me, this is one of those movies I watch when all other more interesting movies are not available to watch or I had already watched all the better movies and have no choice left.
Remember, it's about aliens from outer space already on earth looking like us so they can harvest lonely and creepy old men's guts to be sent to another planet for what ever reason.
Doctor Who: Spyfall: Part One (2020)
Dreadful dribble dominating Doctor Who
Chibnall and Whittaker managed to loose over half of the Doctor Who viewers worldwide. Season 12 opens with an all time low ratings since the series was revived in 2005. If you haven't seen the first two episodes of series 12, not to worry. You are better off not to watch them.
Dreadful writing, appalling acting and over bloated production values plague Chibnall's Doctor Who. Looks like series 12 might be the last for Doctor Who if Chibnall's production continues.
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979)
The good ole days
I remember watching Buck Rogers when it first came on TV. Back then, the special effects weren't too bad for a 10 year old such as myself. Now that I am watching the repeats on MeTV here in Southern California, I can't help but see the similarities of special effects between Buck Rogers and the original series of Doctor Who from the 1980's. Both being so cheesy by today's standards. It was just recently that a couple of friends of mine and myself were talking about old TV shows we used to watch growing up and Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactics made the list. My friends parents and themselves grew up knowing Glen Larson personally through the Mormon Church. They told me about the Mormon connection to Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers. My friends told me that the Mormon Council asked Larson to introduce some Mormon ideology into his shows. The Council wanted to have something that Mormon children could more readily identify with and to covertly introduce some Mormon beliefs into the mainstream. The intended effect was to make Mormon religion more palatable to the public when missionaries knock on your door and try to discuss and convert people into Mormonism. The second season of Buck Rogers is when this is very notable once you know what to look for. Pretty much all of Battlestar Galactica has strong Mormon overtones running through it.
But I digress.
The first season of Buck Rogers in my option is the better season of the two. The female character of Colonel Wilma Deering was in strong prominent authoritative position. In season one, Buck pretty much took orders from Col. Deering, where as season two, Colonel Deering is relegated to being just a bridge officer who now takes orders from Captain Buck Rogers as well as Admiral Asimov. A Colonel forced to take orders from a Captain? Not only a Captain, but a Captain from the past who has little to no knowledge of current military intelligence or strategy just to name a few. Again, this was a purposeful change to reflect Mormon beliefs that man is superior or above women in general Mormon society.
Watching Buck Rogers again after all these decades, I notice all the recycled footage, special effects and sound effects from Battlestar Galactica.
If you take out the Mormon connection and the recycling of Battlestar Galactica stuff, Buck Rogers is fun to watch. The series shows us just how noble the human race can be when confronted with Evil opposition and personal adversity. How we humans as a race can rise above our own petty problems and make a positive change in the world around us. Buck Rogers is mirror of what can be if the human race puts aside our petty differences and just work together to make our world a better place for the future of our children.
Sometimes, the old shows from way back when aren't all bad after all.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Disappointed
Disney has done nothing but milk this franchise for all its worth. I am so disappointed and upset with George Lucas selling out to Disney. My advice to all is to wait until this episode and the up and coming last installment comes out on television to watch it. Don't waist your time and money at the movie theater or cable/satellite pay per view to watch this. You WILL REGRET it.
If you really want a good story about what happened after "The Return of the Jedi", go get "The Thrawn Trilogy" written by Timothy Zahn.
Star Trek Beyond (2016)
Nothing but disappointment.
The only redeeming qualities of this film is Simon Pegg and Doug Jung writings. The actors did the best they could with what they had. And what they had was JJ Abrams mucking about. Sticking his fingers and nose all over this film. This Star Trek movie had a really good chance to rise up to the same caliber as Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek. But, once again JJ Abrams was involved with the making of this film. JJ's moving making formula dumbed down any intelligent writing done by Mr Pegg and Mr Jung. JJ Abrams has this way of turning gold into coal. If you are a Star Trek fan from the original Gene Roddenberry series, this film will only break your heart. There is nothing there that makes you feel anything for any for any of the characters. The basic plot and the whole look of the movie extremely predictable as is all of JJ Abrams movies and films. When will the Hollywood elites stop hiring JJ Abrams to destroy all of these movie franchises? If you're looking for a movie to dumb down your intelligence, than JJ Abrams and this movie is for you.
