Zomboat! (2019)
This show deserved so much better
I can't believe this only lasted one season, and 6 episodes at that. They could have gone a number of directions from the end of the last episode. I love horror, and I love a bit of comedy. Often times, people fail to mix the two, but this show did a really good job of it. This is a go to for me when I'm feeling a little down. Writing, acting, camera work, makeup and wardrobe, everything is well above average. Shocked that it didn't get more love. I think if it aired today, it would probably take off. No more walking dead or z nation to compete with. It was saturated. Would love to see a Blu-ray release of this show. I see them here and there on websites I've never heard of, but I'm pretty sure they're bootlegs.
We're Alive: A Story of Survival (2009)
Any other audio drama/podcast is a distant second
I never thought I'd love an audio drama so damn much. Glued, from beginning to end. Up there with my favorite movies, tv shows, and books. I've listened to the original story numerous times, and never get tired of it. As a matter of fact, just writing this review makes me want to give it another listen. The side stories are great as well, although nothing is better than this original story. I'm jealous of anyone that hasn't already given it a go. Whole lot of episodes, and the first time is so great. Impossible not to binge. The music, sound effects, acting, writing, it's all so good. You truly grow attached to the characters. Unlike I've ever done with characters in any movie or book.
Influencer (2022)
Cheered for the antagonist
Unusual movie for me. I found that I had far more in common with the antagonist. So many people are far too concerned with TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, FaceBook, Only Fans, etc. One of the reasons why so many women think they are 10s, regardless of their size and appearance. It's funny that China created Tiktok, but didn't even allow their very own citizens to use it, until recently releasing their own version of the platform. What's that tell ya? I was hoping the antagonist took out more of these women. I miss the days when it was only people with talent that had a public platform. Athletes, actors, musicians, politicians, etc. Now anyone has a platform regardless of how uneducated, inexperienced, and talentless they are. Pair that with how impressionable kids are today, and it will be our downfall. It's the reason for so many of our asinine identity politics that are so prevalent in the media today. The antagonist is a hero.
Karen (2021)
Are people trolling when they say they like this film?
This is the most ridiculous film I think I've ever seen. Has anyone seen that video on YouTube titled "Racist Karen whips black boys?" This is like that, but even more ridiculous because someone decided to put it in movie form and make it an hour and a half. I'll admit, I did get a few chuckles, just because of how over the top it all is. I'm really concerned about some of the reviews in here though, particularly from people overseas. Somehow a small handful are gullible enough to think this is how it really is here in the states. Well it isn't, far from. Not only that, but the acting was absolutely horrendous. No one did a particularly good job. Real B movie right here, like a Richard Grieco film of the 2020s.
The Mist (2007)
BEST ending of any movie ever!
Frank Darabont is something else. They really did him wrong on The Walking Dead. Although I loved the first 7 or 8 seasons of the show, season 1 and 2 were on another level. In the end, Darabont no longer being a part of the show really came back to bite them. Now, back to The Mist...
If you're watching it and mid way thinking it just ain't for you, please stick with it. Trust me... the ending will pay off. The last 5 minutes more than make up for the time invested. The acting, writing, cinematography, THE MUSIC, all top top tier. Has Frank Darabont ever done anything that wasn't above average? I can't think of anything.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond (2020)
The Walking Dead for Gen Z and the LGBTQ!!!
This is my first and maybe only bad review I'll be leaving on here, and it's due to pure disappointment. This plot had the potential to be so great. Inexperienced kids on their own, out in the open, in a zombie wasteland? Epic! But it didn't turn out that way. I dunno... maybe I'm just an old head right? I don't like their agenda and the nonsense they're pushing. Nothing wrong with traditional norms. Part of the reason that we as a race have accomplished so much.
I still gave it a 5 because the camera work, makeup, VFX, locations, zombies, and universe are still top notch. It's the acting and writing that was horrendous. Overall, this was a fail. That's what happens when you forget who your audience is.
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Hands down the greatest remake of all time!
Epic from the jump, including the opening credits. Just a few minutes into the movie... helicopters, explosions, chases, erratic driving, televised CDC concerns, zombies munching on public transportation, little zombie girls that practically defy gravity, neck bites and arterial spurts, top notch stunt performances, can't get much better. And shockingly, none of it done in a cheesy way. In addition, although I'm sure many will not take advantage, perhaps some of the best and most entertaining bonus features on any disc ever made.
The original from 1978 will always hold a special place in my heart, as will George Romero, but this remake, it's up there with the absolute best of them.
