Ark: The Animated Series (2024)
Flashbacks, Weird Narrative & a Saintly Heroine.
The setting, action, fight scenes, and characters are great, but everything they do right they follow quickly by attempting to virtue signal which feels like a betrayal to the existing fanbase.
The main character's flashbacks give nothing to the current storyline outside of trying to place her in a saintly position which makes her a less relatable character. She's a scientist at the top of her field, a professor at a prestigious university, she is a Lesbian who lost her partner to a foreign conflict, a first nations person from Australia and an activist with a criminal record. The list goes on and on and on and on, but none of it, not even her sexuality is at all important to the current events they put just as much effort into presenting how horrible the world is just for it to be completely overshadowed by how horrible the Ark is.
I don't know, I'll keep going because it is well made. It just seems like too much for zero narrative reward.
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Art reminiscent of the Golden Age
This film is not a sprint, it is a hike through a turbulent setting. Dicaprio playing the role of a Good for Nothing Husband is a role we haven't seen him do. No matter how wicked and vile his character is there is always an essence of competency but not in Killers of the Flower Moon. The cast is top-tier, and the story is heavy and uncomfortable perfect for what it is telling. The wardrobe is amazing. My biggest issue was the score early in the film, it's loud and unnecessary and is often fighting the dialogue for the audience's attention. 8/10 would recommend it to anyone who likes a classic western.
You People (2023)
Sorry not sorry.
This movie is a great example of truly not caring about your feelings, it demonstrates that all people regardless of background or political alignment share the same issues and relationships with in their respective circles.
This does not hold it's punches for either side of the political isle, it is unapologetic and down right hilarious where it shouldn't be. In the current climate the world is in it was not received well but if this was released 5 years ago or 5 years in the future it would be spoken of in the same breath as any of the 2000s Rom-coms.
Jonah Hill really shines in his portrayal of Ezra. This in my mind will be remembered as the stepping stone to the return of good comedy films. A worthwhile watch.
