Waitress (2007)
Endearing..
Jeez, I was not expecting anything much from "Waitress" but a cute little romantic comedy that I could curl up on the couch to and laugh..boy was I wrong. It had depth. It was fascinating. I loved it.
Adrienne Shelly had a great talent for story telling, as well as acting. What a tragedy her life was so cut short.
This film was very well acted, especially by Kerri Russell as Jenna and the turbulent Jeremy Sisto as Earl. These two brought out such a strong range of emotions which was quite riveting to watch.
I will be sure to check out other works by Shelly. It is unfortunate but true that there is not too many highly regarded female directors these days. There are some like Sofia Coppola and such, but I think Shelly could have been one of the great ones.
I Know Who Killed Me (2007)
Oh dear...
I did see all the bad reviews before I rented "I Know Who Killed Me" this past weekend, but thought "how bad could it really be?" Well I soon found out.
It's hard to really go into a detailed review on this but I will say that it was simply horrendous. The premise is somewhat clever, however the delivery fell flat on it's face. The story and acting were laughable. And I do not know if the director, Chris Sivertson, actually directed or was asleep listening to his I-Pod during the filming.
Beyond terrible. The only saving grace is that my 12 year old niece, who I watched this with, said she is no longer a Lindsay Lohan fan.
North by Northwest (1959)
Love this Film!!
"North by Northwest" is one of my all time favorites. I saw this sitting at the video store last night. It's been a few years since I've seen it last and glad I decided to pick it up. Cary Grant as a leading actor is as good as it gets and still makes me gush after all these years. It's directed by the masterful Alfred Hitchcock, and co-stars gorgeous Eva Marie Saint, James Mason and Martin Landau. The script is beautifully written. It has everything you would expect from Hitchcock, suspense, comedy, romance. Extremely well paced and entertaining.
Hitchcock was a genius who stood head and shoulders above his peers. He was the master of suspense and got the best of his actors. He knew the difference between action and a thriller and did it wonderfully.
Watching this reminded me at how much I love Hitchcock films. Brilliant!!
Rhineland (2007)
Wow!!!
I caught this last week at the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase and was literally blown away that this type of film could be accomplished outside of Hollywood.
To be completely honest, I am not that big of a war film buff (that's more my husband) but I was truly impressed by this endeavor.
Chris Grega's direction was solid in telling the story of a hard lucked mine platoon in WWII Germany. The acting was top notch, especially by the three main characters, Derek Simmons, R. Travis Estes and Paul Wendell. Wendell's character, the brutal Sgt. Bowen, was the one that really stood out for me. His acting was stellar who, like Grega, seems destined for bigger and better things. The whole cast played well and really made me a believe that they were going through hell.
But Grega really deserves recognition here. During the Q&A session after the showing, he disclosed how he was able to put it all together. I won't go into the details but I was shocked at how ambitious this project was. I only hope that "Rhineland" gets out to the general public and gets seen.
Just a great film that did an excellent job at portraying the misery and confusion of war.
