Iconic America: Our Symbols and Stories with David Rubenstein (2023)
Something old, something new...some things to think about.
I enjoyed this series-some episodes more than others. Most brought together nicely various elements I had gleaned from other sources. Some (particularly "The Gadsden Flag" and "Stone Mountain") offered completely new information for me. Granted, I didn't always agree with the commentary, but I've always found history to be somewhat "subjective". Afterall, "facts" are "data"...and data tends to be "interpreted". (For instance, you may learn the Statue of Liberty was a "gift" to America from France-the motivations behind that gesture may be debatable.) I found the series enjoyable, informative, and sometimes even thought-provoking.
Be Kind Rewind (2008)
The ending was worth it.
This is a cute little movie, somewhat of a "mash-up", but I was glad I saw it through to the end. The concept is unique but I was a bit bothered by its blend of comedic and non-comedic aspects. On one hand, the time it takes to complete certain tasks is farcical; on the other hand, the attention to achieving the end goal is much more realistic. The character relationships run the same gamut but even in their farce, they are true, well-meaning, and caring. I finally decided this is a movie for those with a short attention span if you want to keep them entertained while trying to convey a deeper message.
De Palma (2015)
An "8" for the film clips alone.
This documentary is worth watching for the film clips alone. With an all-star cast talking about their personal experiences, and interviews with DePalma himself, the documentary explores his influences as well as the influence he has had on both the people he has worked with as well as the film industry as a whole.
I have a tendency to only "listen" to what's on my television while I work on other things, but this is one that will require your complete attention-there are too many film clips you'll want to see. On my IMdB rating scale, an "8" is something I would actively recommend and this documentary definitely qualifies.
Keep/Delete (2022)
Twenty minutes well spent.
One of my favorite things about premium station free preview periods is the shorts--and this is one of the best I have seen. I am sure someone could make a full-length film from this story (with added back-story, character development, technical information, etc.) but I really do not think it necessary. By leaving some aspects of the story and characters vague and underdeveloped, one can fill in the blanks with one's own experiences. I found the lack of details quite thought provoking. I loved the simplicity of this unique concept, summed-up well, and with an end I did not see coming. All-in-all...Twenty minutes well spent.
It Comes at Night (2017)
Is it here yet???
I found this movie sorely disappointing (based on its title and description). Great concept-especially considering it was made pre-COVID pandemic. The casting and acting were both great. The problem? I kept waiting for something to happen-and it never really did. I should have known better...this isn't the first Trey Edward Shults film I've seen (and they seem to focus on human interaction). I think this movie is misclassified as "Horror"-we learn nothing of the "unnatural threat" terrorizing the world. The highs and lows of how humans interact with one another (or don't) requires no imagination.
The Pyramid (2014)
Creatures that dwell in total darkness...can see in the dark!
This movie truly had potential-and didn't fall TOO short. It was an interesting concept with a somewhat new twist on an old theme. There was only one "over-acted" character (much like yelling at a deaf person doesn't make them hear you, repeating exaggerated gestures while speaking in a foreign language does not help make one's point). But the biggest downfall was how STUPID these characters were. When dealing with creatures that dwell in total darkness, turning off one's flashlight does not make one LESS visible. Turn that torch into a weapon people! If the characters had used a little more common sense, it could have been a much better movie. But, in the realm of "Who's going to die/survive?", it did keep us guessing.
