Succession: Church and State (2023)
Pure dramatic excellence.
This week, we are greeted by the long awaited funeral of one Logan Roy. And, to nobody's surprise, poignant and brutal homages were given.
What an incredible episode. As we head towards the series finale, the characters has never felt more human and tangible. The more you see them act out of panic and emotions, the more their true colors show. Roman, Kendall, Shiv and Connor has never been more emotionally naked. And it is a sight to behold.
With one very special mention to Logan's brother. We learn about the trauma, the greed and "meagernesss" that he thought plagued his brother, and thus, the world. Honestly jaw dropping monologue that's Emmy worthy.
Kendall truly metamorphosed into his true future self. The game is clear, the stakes are enormous, and the betrayals may implode the family even further. Can we really blame him?
Roman was a gem this episode. This shell of vile defiant humor made to hide any ounce of humanity he has finally shattered, in front of everyone to see.
A father has been lost, its something that's brought me to tears really. The poor guy was still in denial.
Shiv was splendid. But I digress. This episode is probably the best of the series just for its sheer density of dramaturgy and brilliant writing. The successions are being paved. Everyone is living up to their pre-destinies. So far...
Also special mention to Kerry in this while she has been a mild annoyance to me her acting was absolutely incredible.
Succession: Connor's Wedding (2023)
A painfully accurate depiction and a huge, expected, surprise.
Needless to say, this episode was very good. Excellent dare I say.
Now I have to get spoilery.
The episode serves as a great whiplash that will jump start a whole new set of event that will truly put the title "Succession" on display. Logan's death has been looming over the series ever since season one, but this was not only the perfect time for it, it was also absolutely necessary to happen now.
The way they executed it was nothing short of anxiety inducing. As in real life, when a person passes away, especially a parent, the emergency of the situation, the emotions, time just seems like it stops. Nothing makes any sense, and everyone is discombobulated. I have personally lived such a situation, and I've never seen in media something like the way the show did it.
You are in that visceral moment, the whole episode. No time to breathe, to recollect or to analyze. It just... Ends. In one second, it's death.
It's all over.
And it sends shockwaves thru the family.
We witness the siblings scrabbling, trying to find any last words, any ounce of forgiveness, everything thats been building up emotionally thru the show that the kids never express finally start to flood out. And it will only continue from here on out.
The direction it can potentially go from now could be brilliant. What I think they will do, is truly make the characters fall apart and change, and actually become "serious people", that Logan's death was what they all needed in the end.
But anyways, it was done in such a realistic and nonchalant way, very creative. Very real. Absolute masterclass performances all around. The potential for the rest of the final season is huge. Lets hope they stick the landing. Episode 3 is a 10/10 for me. So far, so good for season 4. Soooo damn good!
