Think Like a Man Too (2014)
Poorly written disappointment of a movie
I did not enjoy this movie. I felt it was too much coonery and poor dialogue. Kevin Hart in my opinion is not funny. He tries way to hard to be funny. I have read both of Steve Harvey's books and felt the movie should have been more of a comedic drama in the vein of Waiting to Exhale. Here was a chance to make a slick, sexy, glossy movie using the guidance Mr. Harvey provides in his books. Instead it was turned into a slap stick vulgar train wreck. Dennis Haysbert, Jennifer Lewis, Tarji Henson, Jim Piddock and Michael Ealy are good actors whose talents were wasted in this movie. Even Gary Owen who is funny could have been utilized better. A lot of the scenes were contrived and predictable. I knew at the end that Zeke would walk across the water to get to Maya. Regina Hall has the makings of a good actress but she has yet to get the right material to showcase her craft. They just threw celebrities in the movie probably to attract more viewers. For example, Drake, Floyd Merriweather served no purpose in the movie and Drake's lines were terrible. I'm surprised that Mr. Harvey would sign off on a movie where the "N" word is used. This movie is no different than the chittlin circuit plays produced by Mr. Perry. Just a greasy bag of chicken.
Why Did I Get Married? (2007)
His best movie so far
THis was Tyler's best movie todate. I do agree however, that he should NOT be in his own movies. As Madea he is quite funny. When he plays other characters he is bland and boring. You could tell he was acting. I agree with another poster who said that Courtney Vance or Blair Underwood would have brought more to the role. Janet Jackson was also very boring. She was not believable to me as a psychologist.
Jill Scott and Tasha Smith were the best parts of the movies. This was Jill Scott's first movie role. She is a natural talent. Although I wondered why her character wouldn't have noticed that her friend and husband were having an affair. It seemed very obvious. From the moment they board the plane, her husband tells her friend Trina to sit next to him and makes his wife sit in front of them. I don't know how many women would have gone for that nonsense. ANd what friend would feel comfortable sitting next to her friend's husband. WHen he makes his wife drive a rental car to the cabin, as opposed to paying for an extra plane ticket, while the friend stays... again it seemed unrealistic.
Sharon Leal and Tyler had absolutely no chemistry. They didn't' seem believable as husband and wife. Perhaps Janet should have played Tyler's wife and Sharon Leal should have played the psychologist. Tasha Smith looked much older than the Michael Jai White character. She looked like she could be his aunt.. not his wife.
I loved the scenery and the feel of the movie. Although there was way too much exposition. Too much exposition in the dialog (Tyler's character saying to the Mailik character "I'm a successful pediatrician you're a successful architect"). Too much exposition in the camera (I saw this same problem in his other movie Daddy's Little Girls when he let the camera rest too much on the grandmother's supply of medicine). Also, having the sheriff there was a bit too contrived.
I saw the play version of this movie and the movie is far better. Tyler has shown that he is improving as a writer (although I think next time he should get someone else to direct). I enjoyed seeing beautiful successful African American actors (something that is a rarity) portray positive characters. I love that Tyler wasn't afraid to have black men paired with black women. I understand that Denzel Washington and Will Smith are not allowed to have black love interests for fear that it will make white audiences uncomfortable. It just goes to show you the tragic racist system we live under, it's OK to show George Clooney with Julia Roberts or with any other woman but white people have a problem with a black man paired with his natural mate. Sickening.
Overall, the money pulls on the heartstrings and is enjoyable to watch despite the flaws (and what movie does not have flaws?).
God Bless
