Downsizing (2017)

I am still mad 2 days later
23 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
We paid to watch this on Pay per View and my friend's wife left to go to bed after there were no funny parts after a half hour. I remembered the trailer and how there had to be funny stuff coming up. I was so jealous of her not watching the next 1.5 hours of the movie and mad that the stuff in the trailer was not in the movie. Some things that made me made were: 1. how come raindrops are small when they are small? 2. how come you can sail fjords and the waves are small? 3. What was the purpose of the trip to Norway? It seemed like a ruse to get Matt Damon out of doing housework. What was the money making deal? Hauling those normal sized bottles behind a tiny boat? 4. Why was having to walk 11 hours enough to make Matt Damon decide not to spend the rest of his life underground? 5. Why did Damon's friend threaten the guy in the bar and get him to back off? Normally in movies, unlike real life, the scenes are selected to tell a story not just a bunch of random events with no connection. 6. If a few miniature people spend 8000 years underground, would they be able to repopulate the earth considering just appearing on a stage required them to be wheeled in by normal people? Would the crocodiles and birds that survived the catastrophe that would wipe out normal sized people not just eat the tiny people? 7. Why did they need to seal the opening of the cave? How are they going to get out? Would not the door be enough? 8. What was the point of the person with cancer? Was getting too many meds and dying a way of supporting euthanasia or was this part of the comedy? 9. Why did the description of pay per view summary say that there was hilarity in the movie? 10. Why did some people like this movie? 11. Why did they have to be shaved? Does the little bit of hair below the skin shrink but the bit sticking out not shrink? 12. What was the point of the bowel cleansing? Did they really get everything out? How much is okay to stay in? 13. What if a person had a sliver they did not know about? Dirt under their toenails? 14. I wanted to see the tiny mouse. 15. Who set up the busing system for the people of color to drive them away from the nice parts? How much could it cost to just give them decent housing since they did provide the normal sized television and programming for them. 16. Who fed the poor while Damon was in Norway? I guess I just needed to vent about how stupid this movie was.

Blow-Up (1966)

There must be higher priority movies to watch than this one
23 April 2015
I read the Mad Magazine parody called "Throwup"which was probably back in 1967. Yesterday I finally saw the movie, less than 50 years later. All I recall from the parody were the black circles under the protagonist's eyes. I see value in this movie from a historical perspective as it shows what people were impressed with back then. Twiggy was a popular model and was called that name because she set a new standard of what models should look like (twigs). Two weeks ago, I watched Marilyn Monroe in Niagara and felt that I learnt more about a view of the times that I did from watching Blowup. I think what I gained by watching Blowup, I could have obtained by watching a 10 minute clip. I have not seen Ben Hur as an example of a movie that should be higher on my list than Blowup.

It passed my test
2 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is the type of movie like Jagged Edge or Crying Game or Matrix that will be different the second time you see it. So I will not go beyond generalities. You will probably like the movie more if you do not read the reviews before you go. If you remember the movie "The Player" there is a movie script that has the potential to be a either a great story or a huge success. At the end of The Player, they make some major revisions to the story and cast to turn it into a Hollywood success mostly by putting in the clichés that audiences demand. So I have a little test when I wonder if a movie is good or bad. I do not want to reveal the test here because it adds information that will add to spoiling the first time view of Before I Go to Sleep. Using my simple test, movies that turned out bad are WaterWorld, Fatal Attraction, and every Jason movie. Some movies that turned out good were Milagro Beanfield War, Jagged Edge, Ghostbusters and this movie. I wonder if the lack of the clichés is why it is showing in so few screens here is Canada?

Light of Day (1987)

This movie is memorable for me for two reasons
26 April 2014
It has been a while since I sat through this movie that I saw at the theatre because Michael J. Fox was in it and his movies can be pretty good. He should stick to comedy where he shines. The two things I remember about this movie is i) one of the few movies I have gone to with my mother and ii) there is one scene where there is supposed to be high drama and a very serious line is said. The theatre burst into laughter for a variety of reasons including the character spoke words that were obvious to anyone watching, the acting was so bad, and everyone was thinking "enough already." So my mom did not particularly like the film but she was confused because laughing usually implies a comedy and she could not see anything funny in this movie.

A lot of hard work and talent
29 December 2012
I was a little scared to see this after reading some of the negative reviews such as Shankru_Spam_Begone's. I did not want to see one of those movies where they give you the audience's reaction so you can be spoon fed to know if something is good or not. As another reviewer already mentioned Shankru_Spam_Begone, saw some other movie, not this one. There were no scenes of audience reaction. If you cannot watch ballet because the dialogue is weak, then maybe you will get bored in this movie. If you get bored watching the Olympics, then you might get bored watching this movie. I threw up in the theatre watching Blair Witch project (even though I was bored in it) because of the shaky camera work, and I was scared going into this one, reading here about the jerky camera. I also saw nothing like that. At a live show, you do look at many different things going on, but you cannot get the close ups like you do in this movie. Another reviewer complained that there were no scenes from Cavalia, which I thought odd, since no Cirque du Soleil shows involve animals, so why should they include another company's work that does not fit their theme? Weird comment.

I have seen Ka, Mystiere, and Zoomanity live and I liked this movie as much as that. My wife has seen a couple others as well and liked the movie more than I. I was shocked and dismayed that the movie theatre was almost empty on a Friday night but as my wife pointed out, young people would rather see CGI than real talent on the screen.

Top marks for its genre
16 September 2012
Many years ago I went to a Three Stooges Film Festival that featured much of their earliest stuff. I was one of the last people to walk out of the theatre (most had left after 20 minutes) as I was hoping that something funny would happen (such as someone getting hit on the head with a sledge hammer). I sort of recalled then what much of their stuff was actually like. People here who are saying this 2012 movie is not funny like the original might be suffering from nostalgia for a time that never actually existed. Even though I see that most of the reviews are saying the movie is great, the overall rating is lower than I would expect. And so I wanted to encourage those people who like a pleasant surprise from a movie of low expectations. If you don't think it is funny when someone hits another's hand and their arm swings around and hits themselves on the head, then don't watch this movie. If you are not sure, then watch it.
