Starlift (1951)
OK, but not great
I was looking forward to watching this film because of all the "stars", but they were actually few and far between. There were more second banana TV stars such as Jack Larson and Hayden Roark. Just like Hollywood Canteen, the plot involves an improbable romance between an actress (played by Janice Rule) and an incredibly annoying soldier.
One bright spot is the appearance of the always enjoyable Phil Harris.
If you're a Doris Day or Gordon McRae fan, they both do some entertaining numbers. Finally, I'm wondering why the film was shot in black and white. By 1951, many musicals were in color. Not that it would have made a big difference.
Stalker (1979)
Don't Bother
I watched this recently on TCM. It's a story about three guys living in a strange world whose only purpose in life is apparently to say pretentious things. No explanations are given or implied about the context of the film, such as the location, the time frame or why these people act like they do. There are a lot of dripping water scenes. Some of the "action" in the movie is filmed so slowly you can go out and grab dinner (with dessert) and you won't have missed anything when you get back. Characters say supposedly significant things like "Neither evil nor good has yet vanished in vain". The luckiest one is "Porcupine", who had the sense to hang himself before having to deal with these people.
